ABC Unveils its Fall 2010 Lineup

May 18th, 2010

ABC’s official upfront presentation isn’t for a few hours, but they have released their fall schedule ahead of time. I am pleased to see a bunch of new shows. As I’ve said before, there’s a lot of buzz around No Ordinary Family, so I look forward to seeing that. I’m also excited to see Matthew Perry’s new show, Mr. Sunshine, which won’t air until mid-season. Wednesday night for ABC is still comedy night, and you can’t go wrong with the shows they have scheduled. I hope that Better Together fits right in. V is also held until mid=season, which is better than last season where they went on a really long hiatus. Overall, I think it’s a very solid lineup.

True Blood Season 3 Preview

May 17th, 2010

Waiting sucks! But True Blood is coming back really soon! I, for one, cannot wait!

In order to fill the void, check out this video preview of season 3:

Q&A: Joss Whedon, Director of “Dream On” episode of Glee

May 17th, 2010

By now, you all know my feelings on Glee. This week’s episode, titled “Dream On,” might be my favorite of the entire season. I will be posting a review soon but recently I had the chance to chat with Joss Whedon, who directed this week’s episode which guest stars Neil Patrick Harris. Joss is obviously a TV director/writer/creator extraordinaire, so it was an absolute privilege to be on the media call with him. And quite honestly, you can tell that this episode is directed by Joss Whedon. There are little touches that shine through that make the episode so amazing. He talked about his experience, working with Neil again and what makes Glee different from any other project he worked on. He even talked about what other show he’d want to direct in the future.

What was it like directing someone else’s show?  Can you give us an update on Avengers?
I can’t give you any updates.  This is purely a Glee call.  Directing somebody else’s show is – I’ve done it once before, twice just with The Office.  It helps if the show’s unutterably wonderful.  That takes a lot of the pressure off.  It’s a little tricky.  You’re living in somebody else’s house and you have to make sure that you’re fulfilling their needs.  It also takes some of the burden off you.  You don’t have to be the guy who sees the big picture.  You just take what they give you and make sure that you’re servicing it as best you can.  Having said that, Glee is probably harder to shoot than any other show in recorded history, with all the different elements going on and whatnot; it’s a different kind of challenge, but ultimately enormous fun.

What were you able to do with the dance number that maybe you weren’t able to do in your other musical episode from Dr. Horrible?
Well, dance would be one thing.  There’s more real hard-core dancing in the show, not in every number.  Some numbers are just about movement.  Then I get to be seriously involved in creating that movement.  Then some numbers are real dance numbers and that’s all Zach Woodlee and Brooke, the choreographers, they’re phenomenal.  There were numbers that I didn’t know exactly how they worked narratively until I saw the choreography and then said, oh, this all works just fine.  I got to really shoot some fun dancing and most of the stuff I’ve done has been more just movement.

Could you talk a little bit about was there any sort of feeling that once again, I’m directing sort of a high school show…a different one, but…
Well, I don’t feel like I’ve necessarily been pigeonholed.  I like high school shows, needless to say, I think they tap into something very primal.  When you have some elements that take them to the next level, whether it’s physical or musical, it’s the kind of thing that completely jazzes me.  To work with a troupe of people who are still young, and fresh and excited to be doing the work, you can’t beat that.

Could you talk about the dance number, the mall number.  How did that fit in?  Was that the most difficult?  I’m not trying to put words in your mouth.
Well, here’s exactly what you must say.  Actually, I want somebody to put words in my mouth, somebody to talk, to tell me – what  do people know about that number?  I haven’t seen the ads and I don’t want to be spoiler guy.

No, we’ve got the episode.
Oh, you guys have the episode.  You know, the thing about that number is that really was Zach and Brooke getting it done.  Ultimately, it’s a complicated, it’s a big, big number, very gratifying, I think because we’re seeing things we haven’t seen before.  I do pride myself on being the guy who knew we were actually going to be able to shoot it pretty quickly because once it gets dialed in, you pretty much just shoot them doing it.  Because of the number of extras and the enormity of the number, people thought it was going to be much more of a bear than it actually was.  We had two film cameras and four video cameras going the whole time, so the thing actually went pretty quickly.  We were able to tack on another scene that day, which is great, because those schedules are a bear.

What was it like working with Neil again?
I am so tired of that guy.  Why do they always make me direct Neil?  Why the pain?  Neil is a consummate pro and a dear friend, which is an ideal combination.  There’s no problem.  My only complaint was that I wanted to shoot even more of the kids than I got to, that and certain craft service issues about not having caviar, but really that’s in my …actually. I feel like he’s one of those people who expresses the way I wish I could express myself.  He’s like a muse, and he’s friends with Matt.  The sort of rivalry/affection between them just informed the whole thing so much.  We had such a good time.  He came in the day after the Oscars, the day before How I Met Your Mother.  He fit this into his schedule in the most bizarre fashion.  I even got him and Jane Lynch to come in late on Friday night after finishing How I Met Your Mother, just so that we could knock a scene off because the schedule was so hard for him.  Always cooperative, always imaginative; Neil’s the man.

EXCLUSIVE: Catching Up with Nurse Jackie stars Edie Falco (Jackie) and Eve Best (Dr. O’Hara)

May 17th, 2010

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of attending the Nurse Jackie panel at The Paley Center in New York. Check out my write-up here. It was there that I got to chat with Edie Falco and Eve Best who were both so lovely.

I wanted to know first and foremost why people root for Jackie. She is a drug addict who cheats on her husband and it doesn’t make sense to root for her. But the show has a brilliant way of turning her into a hero. Edie wasn’t quite sure. She joked “Oh I don’t know. Because she’s nice. She thinks she’s funny. She’s good at what she does, and I think she aims high. I think she falls short a lot of times, but I think she really does want to do good.” I think part of the reason why we do love her so much is because she is a great nurse. She is constantly helping people (sometimes cutting corners to do so) but has an incredible work ethic and really cares about her job.

However, I wanted to know if anyone would ever catch on to her secrets. I knew Edie wouldn’t spill all the details, but she said “I don’t know. She’s pretty good at covering, so I’d be surprised.” I’ve always thought that if people find out (I guess besides Sam), it could unravel the entire show. So I think it will take a while before anyone truly catches on. I then asked her about what it’s like playing a character who leads a double life. “Fun, because it’s like getting to play two characters in one.”

And I wanted to know who she related more to: Mrs. Soprano or Jackie. I always want to know how people relate to their characters so I though this question made sense given Edie’s decorated career. “You mean as far as their lifestyles are concerned? Oh gosh, I think I fall right smack in the middle of the two of them.”

Shortly after speaking with Edie, I got to chat with Eve Best, who plays Dr. O’Hara. Dr. O’Hara is one of my favorite characters on the show and I absolutely love her friendship with Jackie, her interactions with Zoey and her new romantic dilemmas. She was so incredibly sweet in person, and I was thrilled she was at the event (she wasn’t scheduled to be there).

I first wanted to know what her favorite part of playing Dr. O’Hara is. She laughed and said “The clothes. No seriously, working with the cast. Love it. Love them. Love working with Edie and all of them. It’s fantastic.” When asked if she’s anything like Dr. O’Hara, Eve responded “Like Dr. O’Hara?” she laughs, “I’m exactly like her! No, I’m not at all. I’m naturally a very scruffy person.” (Side note: seeing her in person proves that she is anything but scruffy) “Oh no, I am. It’s kind of strange to me to be cast as [her]. The last part I played before I did this show, I played a pig farmer, and I had bare feet and mud all over my legs and arms, and I took to that role more easily than I took to dressing up in Dolce and Gabbana every day for work, but you know someone’s got to do it.” And may I say, Eve, you do it marvelously.

I asked her if she missed the pig farmer role and she candidly replied “No I don’t. I don’t miss the mud.” I delved deeper into her fashion sense on the show and asked about a favorite designer or outfit she’s worn on the show. “For myself, I like Calvin Klein and I like Burberry too. I have to say that because my cousin works for them.” She did declare herself a “fashion clutz” and that she didn’t know too much about fashion, but she looked fantastic.

Because her scenes with Zoey are some of my favorites, I asked if there would be any more of them. “Oh I hope so, yes. Yeah, she’s fantastic and really fun to work with so I hope we do more.” And I asked for a little teaser of what was coming up in the rest of the season, and she asked if we had met her girlfriend yet. I told her that we had, and that was all she was really allowed to say. In her defense, she had been in England so she wasn’t quite sure what we were up to. Whatever the rest of the season holds, I know that I look forward to it.

Nurse Jackie airs Monday nights at 10 pm on Showtime. Be sure to tune in tonight for a new episode!

NBC Unveils 2010 Fall Schedule

May 16th, 2010

Today (before the official Upfront presentation tomorrow), NBC unveiled their new fall lineup. There are a few surprises. I originally thought Parks and Recreation was a mid-season show because of the star’s pregnancy, but have been told by good sources that that’s not the case. They actually have more episodes in the bag because they tape straight through. So I’m really not sure what was behind that decision. Law and Order: SVU’s time slot is also kind of strange. I think most people (including me) were not sure why it wasn’t moved back to 10 pm. However, there are a lot of new shows which I’m looking forward to seeing.

  • 8-9 pm: Chuck
  • 9-10 pm: The Event (new)

Are Your Favorite Shows Being Renewed/Canceled/On the Bubble? What New Shows Are Coming Your Way?

May 14th, 2010

UPDATED 5/18: No shows on the bubble anymore!

A lot of the shows I wanted to be renewed have been (Parenthood, V and Chuck to name a few). However, I am still waiting for a Life Unexpected renewal (as are a lot of us!) I would be shocked if it didn’t get a second season, and I know it would upset a lot of people. It was just announced today that Law and Order is canceled, which is a little surprising given the fact that if it went one more season, they could have beaten a big record. I can’t say I was watching too much of it anyway, but it is a big institution. As for new shows, Law and Order: LA (LOLA) should be interesting. No Ordinary Family has gotten a lot of buzz as has Friends With Benefits. I also (like many) miss Arrested Development, and I’m excited to see the new offering from Mitch Hurwitz and Will Arnett. One thing is for sure, I am looking forward to the 2010-2011 season!

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Mia Kirshner (Isobel) from The Vampire Diaries

May 13th, 2010

Last week’s episode of “The Vampire Diaries” was one of my favorites of the entire season. We have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of Elena’s biological mom and we finally got to meet her. We even find out that Jon Gilbert is actually Elena’s biological father. Isobel is a complex vampire who struggles with her humanity (or lack thereof) and her feelings towards her ex-husband Alaric and her “maker” Damon. I recently had the chance to chat with Mia Kirshner, who plays Isobel, and she had some interesting insights into her character. We even talked a little bit about her time on “The L Word.”

How did you get the part of Isobel?
It was all just pretty random. It was right before Christmas, and I was in the countryside of Malawi staying on a dairy farm, (laughs) and I got this call from my agent and they told me about the show, The Vampire Diaries and it sounded pretty cool. And then they said that I could speak to Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec [Executive Producers] who I spoke to and it was through Skype and it was a really crackly connection, but there were words: mysterious and unpredictable and stuff like that I believe we used in the conversation that made me excited about the character. And I knew that they were talented, so I said yes–not knowing a lot about it. It was kind of a leap of faith.

Isobel is a vampire devoid of any human emotions. How are you able to relate to her?
I don’t think that’s true.

Oh, you don’t? Interesting!
I don’t. I think that she tries not to have human emotions but I think actually that’s her weakness–that she struggles with is that she does still have feelings for Alaric and her daughter.

Oooh, interesting. And how are you able to relate to her? Are you anything like her at all?
(laughs) We both like Paris. We love France. We speak French. That’s probably about it.

So the producers didn’t tell you too much about her back story?
No. I only learned more about the back story when I watched the actual episode. And that was interesting. But no, it was sort of left to my imagination what happened to her between the time that Damon turned her and when she comes back.

So you think that she loves and cares for Alaric. Why do you believe that?
Because I think true love is hard to come by and I think it’s part of who she is. She’s got a lot of lovers in her life, and nothing to compares to what she had. And it’s like at the end of the episode “Isobel,” she said “I made a mistake.”

Do you think she cares about Elena as well?
I think so. And I also think, as twisted as this sounds — I’m not defending Isobel’s actions — I think she wants to push her daughter away because she doesn’t want her daughter to be like her. But I think that ultimately, she’s going to do everything she can to protect her daughter’s well-being.

Yeah, like try to kill Damon and Stefan.
Yes, I mean in her mind, I think she has a skewed view of reality (laughs).

REVIEW: Glee “Laryngitis”

May 12th, 2010

I wasn’t absolutely head over heels in love with last night’s episode of Glee. Whew, I got it out. Deep breath. There were some major high points for me in “Laryngitis” and I loved every musical performance (I don’t think Lea Michele’s purposefully awful rendition of “The Climb” counts), however, I missed Sue, Emma, and Terri.

The episode centered around songs that represent each member of the Glee Club. Puck was struggling with losing his mojo after he had to shave his mohawk. Nerds were throwing him into the garbage can, so he devises a plan to date Mercedes to become popular again. Puck asks Mercedes out by making some hilarious comments. She rebuffs him. My favorite line of Puck’s was: “I’m a sex shark, if I stop moving, I die.” We also find out that Rachel had the Glee club bugged to see who’s actually singing, and most people in the club have not been singing at all.

However, the best part of the episode was the running storyline with Kurt. His dad shows up at school to take Finn to a baseball game, which obviously leaves him feeling left out. Kurt was absent at Cheerios practice, and confides in Sue. Surprisingly, Sue gives him some really interesting and un-Sue like advice. She asks him show does he know who he is if he’s never made out with a girl or a guy. She then hilariously snaps back into Sue mode and tells him only she can tell him what he is. Kurt’s dad goes to speak to him, sensing he is hurt and Kurt is dressed totally unlike himself. In a desperate move to relate to his dad, he tells him that he picked Pink Houses by John Mellencamp for his song that shows his true self. The entire Glee Club is clearly confused by his choice of song. It seems like no matter what he does, he still can’t win his dad’s affection. More on this later.

Rachel gets tonsillitis but is too scared to get her tonsils out because she doesn’t want to lose her singing voice. Finn is with her and supporting her the whole way through. I enjoyed this part because Finn wasn’t trying to pick her up or ask her out or insult Jesse. There was no high school drama (that I love but still). It seemed like Finn was really just being a true friend. What he does later on in the episode proves that he really is a good guy. For his song, Finn sings Jesse’s girl. Clearly, the writers were waiting for the perfect moment to slip this in, but I thought it was pretty great. Sure, it made you go “Ohhh, so that’s why they named him Jesse,” but regardless, I liked this particular Finn solo.

Puck sings The Lady is a Tramp to woo Mercedes (so great, I love when Puck sings solos) and Mercedes joins in at the end. I have to say, perhaps I am in the minority here but I didn’t love the stuff with Puck and Mercedes. I think they are both great characters, and maybe Puck would randomly decide to use Mercedes to become popular again, but it was the only thing about this episode I didn’t find entirely genuine. That said, Santana and Mercedes’ rendition of “The Boy is Mine” was brilliant. I will admit to listening to that song on my super cool cassette and CD boombox over and over. I also liked when Quinn and Mercedes had a heart-to-heart. Their scenes are full of great, heartwarming moments and I loved that we found out Quinn’s living situation, and Puck’s bizarre love of Super Mario Brothers. With Kurt’s new “change,” Brittany asks if he wants to make out to keep her perfect record. The scene with them making out is both hilarious and sweet. I liked when Kurt asked what it’s like to kiss a guy. Kurt’s dad walks in on this and is rightfully confused.

Mercedes and Puck begin “dating”and everyone is scared of him again. Mercedes knows she’s being used but has never had someone like Puck crush on her so she accepts it. At first, I wasn’t happy with her acceptance of this but in the end, she shows that she respects herself too much to let Puck use her. That felt genuine…their short-lived relationship did not. Mercedes also quits the Cheerios to stay true to herself, a decision I also respect. I admire her for being such a strong character who is now finally being true to who she is. That’s not to say that she can’t be popular — I think she has every right to be even without the cheerios — but her reign might be over for the time being.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Elizabeth Mitchell from V and Lost

May 11th, 2010

Elizabeth Mitchell is one of those actresses that has a way of drawing you in. On Lost, Juliet became such a beloved character that I would venture to say was probably just as popular as the Oceanic 6. She now plays Erica Evans on V, where she doubles as an FBI Agent and a leader of the 5th Column (the resistance movement against the Vs). Whatever the role she takes on, Elizabeth Mitchell is just brilliant. I recently had the chance to speak with her and we talked about the upcoming Erica/Anna showdown, the similarities and differences between Erica and Juliet and her favorite moments from filming Lost. (We even chatted a little bit about our golden retrievers!) And while she could share next to nothing about the way Lost ends, we talked about her time there and if she was happy with the way her story ended.

What originally drew you to the role of Erica?
Well, it’s actually really interesting because since I was a little kid, I wanted to play kind of a sci-fi hero protagonist woman. And that really was it. That was the initial draw, and it was basically kind of a childhood wish fulfillment — that sort of thing. Because that’s what I watched, and that’s what I love. And then as I started getting into it and my character started getting more interesting, I was like “Cool, okay this is cool.” So that’s what initially drew me to it. Actually, honestly that was it. I thought it would be a really unique and interesting way to spend my time. And I thought it would be really fun. I had been doing such deep, dark stuff, I thought that taking a little kind of a popcorn movie would be great. Not of course realizing that once I joined it, she would become twisted and dark. (laughs) But you know, that’s just me, that’s what I tend to do.

Well, I like it!
Good, I’m glad. Thank you!

What do you think makes V different from Lost or any other shows you have been on?
Well Lost was really its own world, and so completely unique in the way they went about doing things. Because of Damon, I think, and his tricky little intricate mind. But I actually think that V for me is different because it’s an action-adventure sci-fi show. Whereas Lost was really — I guess you could call it sci-fi, but it was really just this unique hybrid of all kinds of wonderful things. But I just think V is kind of — or what I was hoping for at least — was kind of a shoot-em-up, sci-fi, us-against-them kind of thing and of course, it’s turned into all kinds of wonderful murky shades of gray which is even more interesting, really. Those were my kind of hopes. I kind of wanted to be Han Solo, you know, that kind of thing. So we have one of those now. I think I really do best as the kind of tortured critter who walks around trying to figure everything out. (laughs)

Erica is very suspicious of the Vs for good reason. Do you think the 5th Column is going to gain more followers as the show goes on?
I do think they will, and a lot of it has to do with faith. The whole show I think — it’s so funny, people went political with it, which I thought was great, because I love hearing what people think about things. But to me, it’s all about faith — blind faith for them. It’s about having faith in something. And really, the faith is here, but the Vs are bad. You know, there’s only been a few instances that she can actually pinpoint to say this is true. But her overall feeling is one of such tremendous evil coming her way that she’s taking it on faith that that’s what this is and she’s doing everything she can to stop it. So I believe more and more people will start to feel that way, and things will start to get scarier and scarier. And of course, we as the audience know that Anna is up to no good. But as far as the human race goes, she’s pretty good on paper, as they say. (laughs)

What don’t we know about the Vs that we might find out soon?
Well, I mean, the fact that Anna has all those teeth is pretty cool. I guess we’re going to find out a little bit about the baby which is super super cool. And I think that’s going to be really fun. That’s something I didn’t get to see that I just read about. So I’m very excited to see how the Val and Ryan thing goes.

Yeah, the baby with the tail.
Yeah! How cool is that?! I think we’re going to find out more about what their agenda is, and what their capabilities are. And a little bit more about what they possibility might need from us, and why can’t she just take it peacefully? Why do they have to take it with such force? Obviously, they want something from us that we’re not really willing to give up, or else they wouldn’t be so sneaky about it. I mean, I don’t think Anna’s being sneaky just to be sneaky, that’s just a waste of time. But you never know. (laughs)

And talk a little bit about Erica’s relationship with her son, Tyler. Is she ever going to talk some sense into him?
No I know! It’s really funny, because I was just reading one kind of little review which I don’t usually do because I feel like it can get in your head a little bit. But there’s a couple people that I read, and I’m like “Oh, okay,” because they usually have a pretty good understanding. And one of them was like, “And then he put on the jacket. And that’s getting old!” And I thought well, it is actually, if you think about it. So I don’t think it’s the jacket that keeps her from talking to him, I think it’s the fact that if he knew, and he’s such a kid, I don’t believe he would make good choices with his knowledge, if that makes any sense. I think that any more knowledge that he has, puts him in more danger. And she’s just, she’s completely lost. But I love their relationship. It’s such a teenager relationship. He’s just a long streak of misery. And she basically kind of puts up with it. She’s obviously not a good mother. I mean, anyone who comes home and downs three fingers of vodka is probably not a good mom. (laughs)
