REVIEW: The Vampire Diaries “Brave New World”

September 21st, 2010

bravenewworld

E of Flashback Friday fame is back to recap and review The Vampire Diaries this season! Please welcome her!

Season 2 is already off to an ridiculous/awesome start with Brave New World (Aldous Huxley is so jealous he didn’t think to include vampires in his book). So, the episode starts with Caroline waking up in the hospital and having a little chat in the hallway with a night nurse who is tired of life, for real. The nurse sends her back to her room, but Caroline ends up stealing a bag of blood from someone who is getting a transfusion (which makes me sort of sad for the dude that needs this blood, but that’s sort of the least of humanity’s problems tonight on the VD). She’s grossed out at first, but then totally goes to town on this bag of blood like it’s a Pacific Cooler Capri-Sun.

FALL PREVIEW: Running Wilde

September 21st, 2010

Running Wilde-1

Running Wilde is the latest offering from Mitch Hurwitz, the genius behind “Arrested Development.” Will Arnett is a star and Creator along with Jim Vallely who was a Co-Executive Producer on Arrested Development as well. Arnett stars as Steven Wilde, an incredibly wealthy man-child who sleeps around and doesn’t have to do much in terms of work. He has everything, except the childhood love of his life Emmy Kadubic (Kerri Russell). Emmy is living in the rainforest with her daughter Puddle (yes, that’s her name. She’s played by adorable Stefania Owen) and her boyfriend (David Cross, re-uniting with his former co-star). Emmy is a super liberal humanitarian who is trying to save the rainforest. David Cross’ character is equally as liberal and just a little bit crazy. Puddle is the voice of reason in this whole thing — she wants to move out of the rainforest and an invitation to a “humanitarian award ceremony” for Wilde is just the ticket.

FALL PREVIEW: Raising Hope

September 21st, 2010

Style: "BBS_BONES_MASTER_CURVE"

Raising Hope is a new FOX comedy about a fairly naive guy Jimmy (played by Lucas Neff) whose one night stand turns out to be a murderer who has a baby in jail and is sent to the electric chair. No seriously that’s what happens. So Jimmy and his rather white trash family (headlined by Martha Plimpton of The Goonies fame) are left to raise the baby. His family at first wants him to leave the baby at a fire station (is this a real thing people?!) but Jimmy doesn’t want to part with her. The family sees this baby as a chance for a new start. They will do things right this time. Thrown into the mix is a crazy grandma and a lot of naivete.

ADVANCE REVIEW: Season 2 Premiere of Glee “Audition”

September 21st, 2010

201GLEE_274

Glee is back. No seriously, I kind of can’t believe it’s back myself. There were a lot of complaints about the back 9, the use of guest stars, the HUGE onslaught of music vs. stories, the list goes on and on. I was not as disappointed in the back 9 as my fellow critics and bloggers alike, but I see their point. Ryan Murphy had promised he wants to focus on the main characters and then announced a ton of guest stars. So what’s the story? Here’s what I say: Glee is amazing. You may be cautious about the number of guest stars but we only really have a few ultimately confirmed and remember how amazing Kristen Chenoweth, Idina Menzel, Jonathan Groff and Neil Patrick Harris were? Have faith, Gleeks!

Q&A: James Wolk (Robert Allen/Bob) and Amy Lippman (Executive Producer) of Lonestar

September 20th, 2010

LonestarPilot_SC29_423

Lonestar is one of my favorite new dramas of the fall season, and it premieres tonight at 9 pm on FOX. Check out my fall preview here! It stars James Wolk (a newcomer to television) as Robert Allen/Bob — a con man with two very distinct lives in two very different areas of Texas. Eloise Mumford plays his unsuspecting girlfriend and Adrianne Palicki plays his also rather unsuspecting wife. Jon Voight is Allen’s father in law–an oil tycoon, who is perfectly suited for this part. I recently had the chance to participate in a conference call with James Wolk and Amy Lippman (Executive Producer of Party of Five fame). They talked about filming in Texas, the challenges of this type of role and show as well as two distinct characters that are still just one guy.

ADVANCE REVIEW: The Biggest Loser Season 10 Premiere: Meet The Contestants & Video Preview

September 20th, 2010

the-biggest-loser-season-9-episode-10

The Biggest Loser has its 10th season premiere tomorrow night, and as usual, it totally delivers. The theme of this season is “Paying It Forward,” so the trainers will not only be helping the contestants get in shape, but they will bring it home to their communities in some way as well. The premiere features cities across the country where people show up for a work out day. We then meet three potential contestants — many of which have gone through a very hard time in their lives. However, it’s not Biggest Loser without a challenge. Three contestants in each city have to compete for two spots to go to the ranch, and then they become a team.

FALL PREVIEW: Lonestar

September 20th, 2010

Lonestar_Horiz_Group_V1F

Sometimes I lose faith in good dramas. I have been burned before by getting invested in a show that I love and then it goes off the handle. Or alternatively, it’s fantastic and it gets canceled. Life Unexpected restored my faith in the old school WB type dramas. And now, Lonestar has restored my faith in really great mystery-type dramas.

2010 FALL SEASON: What I’ll Be Watching/DVR-ing/On-Demand-ing and What To Skip

September 20th, 2010

810television

Throughout this week and next I will be posting a lot of advance reviews and fall previews. However, I realize I have not compiled a handy list for all to see. My one DVR (yes sadly, I only have one DVR) is already JAM PACKED, but I will also be relying on On Demand to watch some shows the day after. The pack of new shows is not quite as impressive as it was last season (um, hello Modern Family and Glee) but there are a few good ones that stand out. So, without further ado, here is what I am watching this fall! (And what you should probably skip out on…)

FALL PREVIEW: Mike & Molly

September 17th, 2010

MIKE & MOLLY

A lot of shows are premiering in the next few weeks, and I’m here to preview many of them for you. On Monday, a new offering from Chuck Lorre (Two and A Half Men and The Big Bang Theory) will premiere on CBS. Mike & Molly follows two people looking to lose weight. Mike Biggs is a police officer and Molly Flynn is a fourth grade teacher who meet at an Overeaters Anonymous group. Both Mike and Molly are charming and funny, and find love in a very unlikely place.
