Best Television of 2011

Best of 2011

It’s just about 2012, so it’s time for The TV Chick to reflect on the Best Television of 2011. And there was some amazing TV. Just when I thought I wouldn’t adopt a ton of new shows, a handful came along that just completely sucked me in. I was enthralled with a red sharpie and a plan, engrossed in the crazy world of a CIA agent and a rescued prisoner of war, laughed at the lovable antics and wonderful relationships in Pawnee, taken back to my awkward high school years, and rooted for an insane hybrid vamp-wolf who had no friends. Oh, and that only scratches the surface. I decided that instead of just a Top 10 list, I’d use fun categories. Make sure you weigh in with your favorites too!

Jane By Design Style Challenge: Blog #4

December 29th, 2011

So you all know I’m participating in the Jane by Design Style Challenge. And it certainly is a challenge. I loved the purse assignment but things asking me to create new items of clothing are not completely in my wheelhouse. But hey, it’s worth tapping into your creative side and doing something new for a cute show. Challenge 4 was to take a hideously ugly Christmas/Holiday vest and turn it into something fashionable. Well, Gray Chandler Murray from Donovan and Decker said to make it into something spectacular. Seeing as I don’t have a sewing machine or resources to design something professionally, I took my best shot. Keep reading to see how I turned a vest into cute holiday socks!

INTERVIEW: Lea Thompson (Kathryn Kennish) from Switched At Birth

December 28th, 2011

Switched at Birth returns to ABC Family next week and the premiere has lots of great drama. I’m excited to see what happens with Bay and Emmett’s relationship, Daphne and Bay’s relationship and how the whole “switched at birth” lawsuit plays out. I recently had the chance to catch up with veteran TV actress Lea Thompson, who plays Bay/Daphne’s mom Kathryn Kennish. We talked about the cultural importance of the show, the big premiere and what’s coming up this season.

INTERVIEW: Constance Marie (Regina) from Switched At Birth

December 27th, 2011

CONSTANCE MARIE

Switched at Birth was a completely pleasant television surprise this year. What seemed like an overdone premise turned into a show filled with twists, turns, drama and heartfelt stories. The show turned what could have been something mundane and cheesy into something truly unique and interesting. It’s the only show on TV that I’ve ever seen with all silent scenes, where the characters only speak in sign language. It tackles a subject that few dare to, in a respectful and interesting way. I also love that while the show focuses a good amount on the teenagers (that were switched at birth), the parents also play a big role on the show. I recently had the chance to catch up with Constance Marie, who plays Regina Vasquez, Daphne’s mom (and Bay’s biological mom). We talked about the premiere, her ex returning and how we are going to see her relationship with Bay play out.

Jane By Design Style Challenge: Blog #3

December 23rd, 2011

For those of you reading my site these days, you know I’m participating in the Jane By Design Style Challenge. Jane By Design is premiering January 3rd on ABC Family and it’s a super cute show that centers around Jane Quimby who finds herself working at the fashion powerhouse Donovan and Decker. For my third challenge, I am supposed to go to my closet and find the purse that best represents me. Let me tell you, this challenge was right up my alley. I LOVE purses. I have a ton of them. Some of which haven’t even been used yet. So when I went to my closet, I really couldn’t even pick one…so I picked two. Both of them happen to be from my favorite purse designer Lulu Guinness. But since I could never afford her amazing stuff full price, these both were found at an amazing sample sale a few years ago.

Texting with “A” from Pretty Little Liars

December 23rd, 2011

Pretty Little Liars returns SO soon and in the second half of the season, we are going to learn A’s real identity. I can’t wait! But as with everything in Rosewood, things are not always so simple. Could there be more than one A? I recently had the chance to text with that pesky bitch and so did a bunch of other journalists. We got to ask her some questions and we learned some very interesting information. A has gone to Rosewood High, is a familiar face in Rosewood and may be torturing more than just the girls soon. Read on to see what else A had to say!

Jane By Design Style Challenge: Blog #2

December 20th, 2011

So for those of you following along on my style adventures for Jane By Design, I recently got Challenge #2. Our challenge was to choose our fashion icon and style a plain white tee shirt after them. We were given fabric markers and the tee shirt. I had to think hard about my style icon. I like a lot of things people wear. But for me, it’s about simplicity and comfort. I chose Jennifer Aniston because I think she can look good in anything. But she often dresses in a simple white tee shirt, jeans and a scarf. Easy, classy and pretty. Here’s one example:

She looks put together and nice while still being casual. So that was the look I was going for with this challenge. I dressed up the white tee shirt with a dragon fly pin (made by my Grandpa), a silk scarf and for a little added flare, I added a ribbon across the bottom to dress it up. I didn’t want to mess with the fabric markers because those are permanent and my drawing skills are less than stellar. Here are the results:

Who is your style icon? Head on over to the Jane By Design Facebook Page and tell them who it is! Be sure to tell them The TV Chick sent you! Also, if you are looking to see another really great design as part of the challenge, my buddy Jessica at Small Screen Scoop designed an amazing tee shirt that is inspired by Pretty Little Liars. Go check it out!

Jane By Design Style Challenge: Blog 1

December 16th, 2011

I have been chosen to participate in a Jane By Design challenge for ABC Family and I’m super excited about it. I might not write about fashion a lot but I love it. I think fashion on television shows are integral part of the show and Jane By Design is all about fashion. So, I received a fantastic Donovan and Decker trunk (seriously awesome) full of some fun things — a dress form, some shirts and all sorts of items that will be part of our challenges. For the first challenge, I had to go shopping for design inspiration on a budget. Check out what I found!

REVIEW: Glee “Extraordinary Merry Christmas”

December 14th, 2011

glee-extraordinary-merry-christmas

Last night’s episode of Glee “Extraordinary Merry Christmas” was basically a concert performance of a Christmas CD. There was also a super bizarre Christmas special for the local Lima PBS station. It was cute and involved a lot of singing but I was confused as to whether it was supposed to be some sort of homage to the 50s or just some weird joke thing. Who knows? The songs were pretty entertaining, but a big part of the show was Rachel wanting Christmas presents and she’s Jewish. So that was weird. The entire episode was pretty much all music, though. So for the most part, I liked it just fine.
