ADVANCE REVIEW: Season 3 Premiere of White Collar “On Guard”
June 7th, 2011 by thetvchick
When we last left our favorite FBI agent and former con-man, they had arrested their foe of the season, Vincent Adler, and watched a warehouse full of very expensive Nazi art explode. Or so we thought. The season three premiere, titled “On Guard,” picks up right where we left off, but the relationship between Peter and Neal has changed significantly. Peter finds a piece of charred painting that he saw on Neal’s easel prior to the explosion, and suspects the worst (i.e. that Neal stole the art). The premiere episode focuses on that suspicion, as well as Neal’s struggle with his former self. I’m not going to spoil too much and tell you who did steal the art, but your questions will be answered in the very beginning of the episode.
The season three premiere also stays true to the White Collar case-of-the-day formula, with guest star Neil Jackson (of Make It Or Break It fame). He was very fun to see in this episode, and there is a fencing duel scene between him and Neal that is top notch. (And super hot, I won’t lie). Mozzie plays a great role in this episode as well, and I have come to just love his character so much. I hope we get to see more Peter/Mozzie scenes because they are just so hilarious together. Hilarie Burton also makes a brief appearance, but I’m sure she’ll take on a bigger role as the season progresses. I really like her as Neal’s love interest. They have amazing chemistry and I like that she can go toe-to-toe with him. But even with the backdrop of a case per episode, the premiere set up what is going to be a very interesting (and different) season. Neal and Peter’s relationship is changed after this episode, and if the season goes the way it looks to be going, Neal is going to struggle with a lot of tough decisions (or mainly, one really big tough decision). You’ll see what I mean after tonight.
I absolutely loved this episode. It has the level of palpable tension we have come to know and love about White Collar, coupled with some fun bits of humor and the Neal/Peter dynamic that is the heart and soul of the show. Season three is going to be a very interesting one. I’m glad Adler is out of the picture (and Kate to some extent) so the show’s energies can be focused on the bigger picture. I am very excited for what’s to come.
