PREVIEW: MTV’s Girl Code

April 23rd, 2013

In the vein of MTV2′s big hit Guy Code comes Girl Code, which is debuting on MTV tonight. It’s sort of like Best Week Ever meets The World’s Dumbest with a girly angle to it. Here’s what MTV has to say about the show: MTV’s new series Girl Code is a strong and smart female driven comedy series bringing millennial viewers a new, hilarious how-to manual full of over the top tips to push the envelope and open the dialogue about the wonders and woes of womanhood. In the same style of irreverent commentary that fans have come to love on MTV2’s top rated series Guy Code, the new MTV series calls on female stand-up comics, actresses and musicians—and even a few guys—to weigh in on the sisterhood that all girls share. I got a chance to screen the premiere and it’s quite amusing and worth checking out.

Bronx Science Celebrates 75 Years with Jon Favreau and Dominic Chianese

April 22nd, 2013

The stars were out for the Bronx Science 75th Anniversary Gala, held at the Waldorf Astoria on Saturday evening. The evening ended up raising a million dollars for Bronx Science, which is a public charter school in New York, founded in 1939. Its main focus is on science, obviously, but from speaking with alumni, it was clear that many creative types found their home at Bronx Science as well. Attendees were treated to a brief history of Bronx Science from the captain of the debate team, who spoke so fast it made my head spin. But she was quite impressive. We also got to watch a performance by the Jazz Band and Steve Karmen who is known for writing the advertising jingle for the “I Love New York” ad campaigns. Now you might be asking, what is the TV Chick doing at a science/school gala? Well, many famous alumni work in TV, film and journalism. I got to speak to Jon Favreau (who will forever be Pete from Friends in my eyes), Jeff Greenfield (an author and journalist), and Dominic Chianese (from The Sopranos) about their experience at the school, their upcoming projects and what it means to them to be celebrating the 75th anniversary of their alma mater.

ADVANCE REVIEW: Season Three Premiere of Awkward “Cha-cha-cha-changes” & “Responsibly Irresponsible”

April 16th, 2013

awkward

When last we left our favorite “skitches,” Jenna finally chose (Team Matty vs. Team Jake) and she decided to stay in town for the summer with her beau of choice (Matty), and give her space on the Europe trip to Tamara. We pick up with everyone returning to school. Side note for a moment: Awkward is one of the few shows with high school age students actually GOING to school. I’m kind of amazed by this. But I digress. We learn that Jenna and Matty have basically spent the summer doing a whole lot of making out. Tamara and Jake also seem to have done a whole lot of making out over the summer in Europe, but are still working on the whole DTR situation. But Jenna has been in her own world this summer with Matty, and she has to work to get her friendship back up to speed with Tamara and Ming. And our favorite bitch Sadie is going through a crisis of her own at the beginning of the season. There’s lots of speculation as to what the crisis could be, but I’ll let you watch and find out.

ADVANCE REVIEW: Hannibal

April 4th, 2013

Hannibal-TV-Series-hannibal-tv-series-33200176-1121-630

We’re all familiar with the character Hannibal Lecter. Most of us have seen Silence of the Lambs, and perhaps the less popular sequel Hannibal. There are also the novels written by Thomas Harris, that focus on FBI special agent (and criminal profiler) Will Graham and Lecter. And that’s the world that Bryan Fuller’s new series Hannibal is going to explore. Despite the title of the series, the show is more focused on Will Graham and now he gets into the mind of serial killers. Hugh Dancy plays a rather perfect Graham, falling on some end of the Autism spectrum, which is always a hard role to play. Mads Mikkelsen plays Dr. Hannibal Lecter with a great subtlety that is necessary for the role. Rounding out the cast is Laurence Fisburne as Special Agent Jack Crawford (Will’s boss) and Caroline Dhavernas as Dr. Alana Bloom, a psychology professor and a profiler for the FBI. I can only assume Dr. Bloom will get more into the fold after the pilot, and possibly act as a love interest. I’m interested to see how she will get more involved.

INTERVIEW: Alan Tudyk (Noah Werner) from Suburgatory

March 27th, 2013

tudyk

Noah Werner has been through the ringer on this season of Suburgatory. He realized that he is not compatible with his wife, falls in love with his housekeeper Carmen (and is then rejected by her in an amazing, hilarious, heartbreaking way), and tonight, he is moving out of the house with baby Opus into a fancy hotel. But like so many things in Chatswin, things aren’t going to go as planned. I recently had the chance to chat with Alan Tudyk, who has played such a fascinating, wide variety of characters, about what he loves about Noah, moving in with George, and some friendly on and off set dieting competition with his co-star Jeremy Sisto. Don’t worry, it’s just because they are both stripping down to their speedos to compete for the coveted December spot in the Men of Chatswin calendar in next week’s episode.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Dena Kaplan (Abigail) from Dance Academy – Part 1

March 25th, 2013

dena kaplan 1

If you haven’t watched Dance Academy, I truly question your taste in television. My Senior Writer, Sarah and I wrote a love letter to Dance Academy last year (check it out here) and we are legitimately waiting with baited breath for season three. Dance Academy is an Australian show that centers around the students attending the fictional National Academy of Dance. But the show is about so much more than that. It is heartwarming, heartbreaking and full of all the teen drama your heart desires. I had the chance to chat with my favorite Dance Academy cast member, Dena Kaplan, who plays Abigail. Abigail is the resident perfectionist, troublemaker, and thorn in everyone’s side. At the end of last season (and don’t keep reading if you have not watched season two, seriously stop right now), it looked like Abigail and Sammy were going to reconcile. And then we all tragically lost Sammy (moment of silence, DA fans), and everyone’s life was turned around. Dena talked about this incredible loss, playing the bitch while keeping her grounded, growing up in the real life version of Dance Academy and lots more. I have a lot of great scoop about season three, but that will be published closer to the premiere.

INTERVIEW: Jeremy Sisto (George Altman) from Suburgatory

March 20th, 2013

JEREMY SISTO

Suburgatory is a comedy tour de force. While I feel it can sometimes get overshadowed by its Wednesday night neighbor Modern Family, Suburgatory is hilarious, quirky and truly unique. Tessa has finally started to feel at home in Chatswin this season (a NYC suburb), with her solid group of friends and new (unexpected) boyfriend. Meanwhile, her dad, George has finally gotten serious with Dallas, despite their very different backgrounds. I recently had the chance to talk to Jeremy Sisto (who won our hearts over in “Clueless” and now plays George) who teased a big hip hop performance, a shift in the Tessa and George relationship and George’s new parental role with Dalia.

ADVANCE REVIEW: Bates Motel

March 18th, 2013

02-the-bates-motel-sign

I am a big Hitchock fan. “The Man Who Knew Too Much” is one of my favorite movies, and I am a fan of how cleverly creepy Hitchock always manages to be. So I was obviously intrigued by A&E’s new show “Bates Motel,” which is a modern day story of Norman Bates in his teenage years. Freddy Highmore plays a appropriately disturbed Norman Bates, who is starting to show signs of major psychological problems. Vera Farmiga plays a rather put together on the outside, but completely insane on the inside, Norma Bates. Add to the equation a half brother, Dylan Massett, played by Max Theiriot (who was not in the movie). Dylan despises his mother, but ends up back home because he has nowhere else to go.

GIVEAWAY: The Client List Prize Pack

March 6th, 2013

TCL_Horizontal

Riley Parks is back. Lifetime’s hit drama series The Client List, starring Jennifer Love Hewitt, will return for its second season on Sunday, March 10, at 10:00pm. The Client List caught me by surprise last season. I am a big fan of Lifetime and I was a fan of the original movie that lead to the pilot. But I wasn’t sure how the transition would go. Turns out it was pretty seamless, and the result is a super fun, sexy show. Leading up to The Client List’s return, Lifetime will air mini-marathons of the series’ first season on Sunday, March 3, and Sunday, the 10th. After last season’s cliffhanger finale, season two of The Client List promises to be no easier for Riley Parks at home or at work. The Texas single mother of two who, after being deserted by her husband and left in financial straits, took a job at a seemingly traditional day spa only to learn that sexual favors are being offered there on the side. After her estranged husband Kyle returns, for better or for worse, Riley must walk the fine line between her anger and love for him and the romantic feelings she has for her brother-in-law Evan. Riley also takes a larger role at the spa, resulting in added power, responsibility and burden, further complicating her life. New threats abound this season and trust becomes an overwhelming issue for Riley as everyone, even those she believes she can count on the most, seems to be hiding their own secret. I am excited to offer a great giveaway! Keep reading to see how you can enter to win a prize pack from The Client List.
