SAG Award Winners (Television) & My Thoughts
January 31st, 2011 by thetvchick
The SAG Awards were held last night and unlike some of the bigger awards shows, this one doesn’t have a host. I actually really liked this as well as the “I am an actor” personal testimonies from some of the actors there. The SAG awards can often be seen as a predictor of who may win the Oscars because the members of the screen actors guild vote for the Oscars as well. But it’s not just all about movies — there are a bunch of TV show categories as well, and I was excited by some of the winners. Read on for a list of winners and my thoughts!
Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series
Boardwalk Empire
I liked the few episodes of Boardwalk Empire that I saw last season, but it just wasn’t my thing. It’s a newcomer and it was sort of expected to win but I was hoping for a win for The Closer or The Good Wife. If any show deserves a win for the ensemble, it’s certainly those two. Oh well, perhaps next year.
Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series
Modern Family
Modern Family finally gets a big win! I love this show. I also love Glee. I can like both! I know many people who like both! That said, I was so happy for Modern Family to win. The kids looked absolutely adorable and so happy and it was great seeing such a wonderful and deserving cast get recognition.
Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series
Steve Buscemi, Boardwalk Empire
Again with Boardwalk Empire. I like Steve Buscemi but I was hoping Michael C. Hall or Bryan Cranston would win.
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series
Julianna Margulies, The Good Wife
Yay! That is my first reaction to Julianna winning. Her acceptance speech was so incredibly sweet and she truly kicks ass in The Good Wife. I’m so glad she won.
Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series
Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock
Don’t they put a cap on how many times someone can win an award? Alec Baldwin is hilarious, yes. But this year I think Ty Burrell or Ed O’Neill were truly deserving. Come on, SAG members have you watched Modern Family? Oh well, hopefully one of them will win in the future.
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series
Betty White, Hot in Cleveland
Some people are all up in arms about Betty White winning this award. She won a lifetime achievement award last year. But honestly, I admit, I watch Hot In Cleveland and I enjoy it. And Betty White is the best part of it. Perhaps the voting was influenced by the fact that she is 89 and still working but who cares? Betty White is fantastic. I love all the other actors in this category too and in an ideal world they could all share the award. Of course, I was thinking and pulling for Jane Lynch to win, but for now, my love for Betty White is still strong.
Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries
Al Pacino, You Don’t Know Jack
Good for Al Pacino. That’s really my only thought about that.
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries
Claire Danes, Temple Grandin
Claire Danes was fantastic in Temple Grandin but it seems as if she’s won every mini-series award ever over like 2 years. I do enjoy her though.
What are your thoughts? Was someone snubbed? Was an entire cast snubbed? Were you happy with the winners? Weigh in!

Totally agree about Modern Family/Glee. Love both, for different reasons. There’s no doubt that the Modern Family cast was deserving of this (although, I would have liked a little more Glee exposure during the show last night, even though many people think they are over-exposed).
And, Betty White, come on. I believe I heard them say this was her FIRST win in this category at the SAGs. She’s legend, but, beyond that, deserving of the award.
