ADVANCE REVIEW: Bored To Death Series Premiere

Bored to Death is a new comedy starring Jason Schwartzman, Zach Galifianakis, and Ted Danson. Schwartzman plays Jonathan Ames (who created the show), a young writer from Brooklyn who just went through a breakup partly because he drank too much. Instead of dealing with this, he posts an ad on Craigslist offering up his services as a private detective. This was inspired by him reading the novel Farewell My Lovely by Raymond Chandler.

In the premiere, Jonathan’s first case involves helping a young girl find her missing sister. This case is of course filled with hilarity and sticky situations. Thrown in the mix is his quirky, pot-smoking boss George (Ted Danson) and his best friend Ray (Zach Galifianakis). I really enjoyed this premiere. It didn’t bore me to…well you know. I thought Schwartzman maybe came across a little bit of a Brooklyn/Jew/Snob but that was sort of his character’s shtick anyway. But I thought the show was clever and very well written. The 2nd and 3rd episodes were also very solid. I enjoyed Kristen Wiig’s guest appearance and Galifianakis’ relationship with his nutty girlfriend Leah (played by Heather Burns).

Based on the first few episodes, I have high hopes for this show. I like most HBO programming for its creativity and originality, and I think Bored to Death fits right in. It premieres tonight at 9:30 pm on HBO! Be sure to tune in–or DVR because of the Emmys–but it really is worth watching!
