Emmys 2010: List of Winners & My Thoughts on Who Got Snubbed

August 30th, 2010

The Emmys are like the Superbowl for television fans. It’s a good thing I didn’t bet on it though, because I probably would have lost. In any case, the telecast was a pretty successful one. By far, my favorite part of the night was the opening number featuring Jimmy Fallon singing along with members of the casts of Glee, Lost, The Vampire Diaries, Mad Men and 30 Rock (and even a little Betty White!)

My Emmy Wish List and Predictions

August 27th, 2010

It’s that time again! Emmys are right around the corner, and I can’t wait! I’m very into award shows, and I am especially excited for this years nominees. Some of the awards were already given out at the Creative Arts Emmy Award Ceremony — including one for Betty White for hosting Saturday Night Live and one for Neil Patrick Harris for guest starring on Glee. I adore both of them, so I was happy to see them take home a statue. Below, I list the big category nominees. I will say who I think will win and who I want to win. Weigh in with your thoughts as well!

Emmy Nominations Announced & My Thoughts

July 8th, 2010

The Emmy nominations were announced just a short time ago and I am VERY pleased. In fact, most of my Emmy wishes from yesterday came true! Here is a list of all the major categories and my thoughts about the nominees!

OUTSTANDING DRAMA
Lost
Breaking Bad
Dexter
Mad Men
True Blood
The Good Wife

True Blood finally got some Emmy recognition. It’s about time! I would love to see some actors and actresses from the show get nominated but perhaps next year?

OUTSTANDING ACTRESS IN A DRAMA
Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife)
Mariska Hargitay (Special Victims Unit)
Glenn Close (Damages)
Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer)
January Jones (Mad Men)
Connie Britton (Friday Night Lights)

So glad to see Friday Night Lights nominated!

OUTSTANDING ACTOR IN A DRAMA
Jon Hamm (Mad Men)
Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights)
Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad)
Hugh Laurie (House M.D.)
Michael C. Hall (Dexter)
Matthew Fox (Lost)

A lot of people were hoping to see Bryan Cranston get nominated, and there he is. It seems like a category with a lot of deserving nominees.

OUTSTANDING ACTOR IN A DRAMA
John Slattery (Mad Men)
Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad)
Martin Short (Damages)
Terry O’ Quinn (Lost)
Michael Emerson (Lost)
Andre Braugher (Men of a Certain Age)

Terry O’Quinn and Michael Emerson nominated! What a smart move! Terry O’Quinn probably had one of the most brilliant acting performances in the history of the entire series of Lost last season and it wouldn’t make sense to not recognize that. It’s nice to see Andre Braugher up there as well, which is something I didn’t expect. He’s an amazing actor.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A DRAMA
Sharon Gless (Burn Notice)
Christine Baranski (The Good Wife)
Christina Hendricks (Mad Men)
Rose Byrne (Damages)
Archie Panjabi (The Good Wife)
Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men)

I adore The Good Wife, so it is absolutely wonderful to see both Christine Baranski and Archie Panjabi get a nomination. I love them both, but I have to say I am rooting for Archie.

COMEDY

OUTSTANDING COMEDY
Glee
Modern Family
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Nurse Jackie
30 Rock
The Office
Curb Your Enthusiasm

A category with such amazing nominees, but you all know I am rooting for Glee to take home the statue.

OUTSTANDING ACTRESS IN A COMEDY
Lea Michele (Glee)
Tina Fey (30 Rock)
Toni Collette (The United States of Tara)
Julia Louis-Dreyfus (The New Adventures of Old Christine)
Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie)
Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation)

OUTSTANDING ACTOR IN A COMEDY
Larry David (Curb Your Enthusiasm)
Alec Baldwin (30 Rock)
Matthew Morrison (Glee)
Steve Carell (The Office)
Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory)
Tony Shalhoub (Monk)

It’s nice to see Matthew Morrison up there in the lead actor category. As inconsistent as The Office has been this season, Steve Carell is always hilarious. It’s going to be a tough category.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A COMEDY
Chris Colfer (Glee)
Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother)
Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Modern Family)
Jon Cryer (Two and A Half Men)
Eric Stonestreet (Modern Family)
Ty Burrell (Modern Family)

Chris Colfer, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Ty Burrell, Eric Stonestreet AND Neil Patrick Harris?! Did they Emmys read my mind?? First of all, I am so happy to see Modern Family with so many nominations. I think Eric Stonestreet will probably pull out a win but Chris Colfer is very deserving and could give him a run for his money.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A COMEDY
Jane Lynch (Glee)
Kristen Wiig (Saturday Night Live)
Jane Krakowski (30 Rock)
Julie Bowen (Modern Family)
Sofia Vergara (Modern Family)
Holland Taylor (Two and A Half Men)

I absolutely love seeing Jane Lynch, Julie Bowen and Sofia Vergara in this category. I am rooting for all three because I can’t pick just one…Julie Bowen. (ahem)

OUTSTANDING VARIETY, MUSIC, OR COMEDY SERIES
The Colbert Report
The Daily Show With Jon Stewart
Real Time With Bill Maher
Saturday Night Live
The Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien

Not many thoughts on this one, as the nominees are usually the same every year.

OUTSTANDING GUEST ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES
Mike O’Malley (Glee)
Neil Patrick Harris (Glee)
Fred Willard (Modern Family)
Eli Wallach (Nurse Jackie)
Jon Hamm (30 Rock)
Will Arnett (30 Rock)

Just hand the statue now to Mike O’Malley and call it a day. Burt Hummel for the win!

OUTSTANDING GUEST ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES
Christine Baranski (The Big Bang Theory)
Kathryn Joosten (Desperate Housewives)
Kristin Chenoweth (Glee)
Tina Fey (Saturday Night Live)
Betty White (Saturday Night Live)

Betty White is an American treasure. Yes, I said it. I love her! And her episode of Saturday Night Live was absolutely outstanding. She deserves this Emmy and then some sort of lifetime achievement award!

GUEST ACTRESS IN A DRAMA

Mary Kay Place (Big Love)
Sissy Spacek (Big Love)
Shirley Jones (The Cleaner)
Lily Tomlin (Damages)
Ann-Margaret (Law & Order: SVU)
Elizabeth Mitchell (Lost)

I am rooting wholeheartedly for Elizabeth Mitchell. She is absolutely amazing and so deserving for her portrayal of Juliet.

GUEST ACTOR IN A DRAMA

Beau Bridges (The Closer)
Ted Danson (Damages)
John Lithgow (Dexter)
Alan Cumming (The Good Wife)
Dylan Baker (The Good Wife)
Robert Morse (Mad Men)
Gregory Itzin (24)

I think the Emmy will probably go to John Lithgow for Dexter because he was amazing, but I think Alan Cumming is also very deserving.

What do you think of the nominations? Did any of your favorites get snubbed? Weigh in!

Emmy Nominations Tomorrow: My Wish List

July 7th, 2010

Say it with me: Party Down needs to be nominated for an Emmy. Whew, glad I got that off my chest. At the very least Adam Scott and Lizzy Caplan should get a nod. I would love for the rest of the cast to get nominated as well, but I understand for it to get nominated in the first place is a far reach. Onto the more conventional: Of course I want to see Glee rake in the nominations. I would love to see either Chris Colfer or Dianna Agron get nominated for supporting roles. Lea Michele and Jane Lynch are shoe-ins at this point for actress (or supporting actress) in a comedy series. I hope to see Modern Family get a lot of accolades. I think Ty Burell has a nomination locked in, but I would absolutely love to see Julie Bowen and Eric Stonestreet get recognition as well. I’m sure it will also secure a nomination in the Best Comedy category. One of the most underrated comedies that I actually ended up loving is Cougartown. It overcame it’s ridiculous title to really come into its own. I would really like to see both Courteney Cox and the show get a nomination. Parks and Recreation had a really good sophomore season, and I’d love to see the show and Amy Poehler get a nod. I love Neil Patrick Harris and I think he’s definitely going to get a nomination but How I Met Your Mother has not been very consistent this year.

As for dramas, I anticipate seeing Juliana Margulies for The Good Wife on the ballot, as well as Kyra Sedgwick from The Closer and Edie Falco from Nurse Jackie. They are three of my favorite leading ladies and they are highly deserving of nominations. I hope that True Blood might finally get some Emmy recognition, but it may not happen. One breakout performance for me though was Ian Somerhalder from The Vampire Diaries. The Vampire Diaries is an amazing show. Anyone who hasn’t watched, I challenge you to catch up over the summer. It’s not just your average Vampire show with teens in it, it’s truly great. The WB/CW doesn’t have the best history of getting nominated for Emmys (ahem, Gilmore Girls is one of the best shows on television ever!) so I’m not holding out too much hope but one can dream, right?

I realize there are a lot that I missed, but these are just actors on my wish list. Who do you want to see nominated? Do you agree with my nomination wishes? Weigh in!

The Emmy nominations will take place live tomorrow morning starting at 5:30 AM Pacific Time.

My thoughts on the Emmys

September 21st, 2009

As predicted, Neil Patrick Harris was a phenomenal host. He made the 3+ hour long broadcast very enjoyable. His opening number was amazing.

Check it out here:

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTdYsFUSdnM&hl=en&fs=1&]

I thought that most winners were very well deserving, but some were very predictable. Here are some people who I thought were snubbed:

Amy Poehler, Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy
Neil Patrick Harris, Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy
Motherlover Video, Saturday Night Live
Saturday Night Live for Variety Series
Dianne Wiest or Hope Davis for In Treatment
Mariska Hargitay for SVU or Kyra Sedgwick for The Closer
How I Met Your Mother or The Office for Best Comedy Series

I really thought that Neil Patrick Harris would win this year. And if he didn’t win, I had high hopes for the show. In Treatment is such an amazing show that I was shocked Dianne Wiest didn’t win two years in a row. But all in all, it was a fun show. I could have done without the Miniseries/Made for TV movie part that was incredibly long. And I’m not sure how I felt about the broadcast being broken up into different categories. However, I think this show (or really Neil Patrick Harris) guaranteed the Emmy Awards future on television.

Emmy Night Predictions!

September 20th, 2009

Emmy night is finally upon us! I love the Oscars, and all awards shows, but the Emmys are where TV gets to shine. And for TV addicts like me, it’s a pretty incredible night. However, there is one thing that makes tonight’s Emmy awards even more exciting. Three words: Neil Patrick Harris. I’m excited to see him completely dominate this awards show. There is even going to be a Dr. Horrible-themed performance!

I know I previously made some Emmy nomination predictions, so today I’m going to make some Emmy winner predictions. Feel free to weigh in as well.

There are a few categories that were extremely difficult for me to pick just one person. Lead Actor in a Comedy is such a strong field, so I went with Alec Baldwin who has won in previous years. Although I would love to see Steve Carell win too. Picking a winner in the Lead Actress in a Drama category was also very difficult. I love Mariska Hargitay and Kyra Sedgwick, but I just have a feeling Elisabeth Moss might win. As for the Supporting Actress in a Comedy category, I went with my heart. It is an extremely talented field of nominees, and I think anyone could take home the statue. In addition, the Emmy awards that have already been given out deserve a mention: Tina Fey for playing Sarah Palin on SNL, and Justin Timberlake for hosting SNL are two phenomenal winners. I’m excited for whatever tonight brings! The Emmy Awards are on CBS tonight starting at 8 pm. I will weigh in tomorrow with my post-Emmy thoughts as well.

Partial List of Emmy Nominations and My Thoughts

July 16th, 2009

Drama Series:

  • Breaking Bad
  • Big Love
  • Lost
  • Dexter
  • Damages
  • House

No real surprises here, good nominations all around.

Comedy Series:

  • Entourage
  • Family Guy
  • Flight of the Conchords
  • How I Met Your Mother
  • The Office
  • 30 Rock
  • Weeds

Family Guy has been nominated before, but it’s a little strange to see it in a category with How I Met Your Mother. Flight of the Conchords is a nice surprise.

Lead Actress in a Drama Series:

  • Sally Field (Brothers and Sisters)
  • Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer)
  • Glen Close (Damages)
  • Mariska Hargitay (Law and Order: SVU)
  • Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men)
  • Holly Hunter (Saving Grace)

My main girls are nominated again! Also, glad to see Holly Hunter up there for Saving Grace.

Lead Actor in a Drama Series:

  • Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad)
  • Michael C Hall (Dexter)
  • Hugh Laurie (House)
  • Gabriel Byrne (In Treatment)
  • Jon Hamm (Mad Men)
  • Simon Baker (The Mentalist)

I had hoped for a 2 year in a row Gabriel Byrne nomination and I got it! Here’s to hoping he wins, but there is definitely some stiff competition.

Lead Actress in a Comedy Series:

  • Julia-Louis Dreyfuss (The New Adventures of Old Christine)
  • Christina Applegate (Samantha Who?)
  • Sarah Silverman (The Sarah Silverman Program)
  • Tina Fey (3o Rock)
  • Tony Collette (United States of Tara)
  • Mary-Louise Parker (Weeds)

This category has some much-deserving funny ladies. Sarah Silverman is maybe the most surprising, but very well deserved. I’d love to see her or Toni Collette pull out a win!

Lead Actor in a Comedy Series:

  • Jermaine Clement (Flight of The Conchords)
  • Tony Shalhoub (Monk)
  • Steve Carell (The Office)
  • Alec Baldwin (30 Rock)
  • Charlie Sheen (Two and a Half Men)
  • Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory)

All very funny men…my guess would be Jim Parsons takes home the statue. He was so cute when Chandra Wilson announced his nomination.

Made for TV Movie:

  • Coco Chanel
  • Grey Gardens
  • Into the Storm
  • Prayers For Bobby
  • Taking Chance

Grey Gardens! Also, Prayers For Bobby was pretty great, so I’m happy to see it nominated.

Lead Actress/Miniseries:

  • Shirley MacLaine (Coco Chanel)
  • Drew Barrymore (Grey Gardens)
  • Jessica Lange (Grey Gardens)
  • Sigourney Weaver (Prayers For Bobby)
  • Chandra Wilson (Accidental Friendship)

It’s nice to see some great, seasoned actresses in this category.

Lead Actor/Miniseries:

  • Kevin Kline (Cyrano de Bergerac: Great Performances)
  • Brendan Gleeson (Into the Storm)
  • Sir Ian McKellan (King Lear: Great Performances)
  • Kevin Bacon (Taking Chance)
  • Kiefer Sutherland (24: redemption)
  • Kevin Brannagh (Wallander: One Step Behind)

Along the same lines, some incredibly actors in this category too!

Reality Competition Program:

  • Amazing Race
  • American Idol
  • Dancing With The Stars
  • Project Runway
  • Top Chef

It’s nice to see the Bravo shows represented…I am pulling for one of those to win!

Outstanding Variety, Music, Comedy Series:

  • Colbert Report
  • The Daily Show
  • Late Show with David Letterman
  • Real Time with Bill Maher
  • Saturday Night Live

Solid choices (pretty much the same as every year).

No supporting categories announced live, which is a little surprising, but here are more categories worth discussing:

Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series:

  • Tracy Morgan (30 Rock)
  • Jack McBrayer (30 Rock)
  • Kevin Dillon (Entourage)
  • Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother)
  • Rainn Wilson (The Office)
  • Jon Cryer (Two and a Half Men)

While I am thrilled for Neil Patrick Harris, I think he should have been nominated in the Lead Actor category. I’m obviously hoping he wins, because Barney Stinson is one of the best things to happen to television, but who knows. Jack McBrayer gets a very deserving nomination here as well…very happy for him.

Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series:

  • Jane Krakowski (30 Rock)
  • Kristen Chenoweth (Pushing Daisies)
  • Kristen Wiig (SNL), Amy Poehler (SNL)
  • Vanessa Williams (Ugly Betty)
  • Elizabeth Perkins (Weeds)

I am thrilled to see two ladies from SNL nominated (I totally called Amy Poehler’s nomination). However, I’m sad that Jenna Fischer didn’t get a nod. There’s always next year!

Supporting Actress in a Drama Series:

  • Cherry Jones (24)
  • Rose Byrne (Damages)
  • Sandra Oh (Greys Anatomy)
  • Chandra Wilson (Greys Anatomy)
  • Dianne Wiest (In Treatment)
  • Hope Davis (In Treatment)

Dianne Wiest and Hope Davis were phenomenal on In Treatment…so here’s to hoping one of them wins (get it, hoping?)

Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series:

  • Jon Hamm (30 Rock)
  • Steve Martin (30 Rock)
  • Alan Alda (30 Rock)
  • Beau Bridges (Desperate Housewives)
  • Justin Timberlake (SNL)

All of these actors are great, but I am most excited to see Justin Timberlake nominated. He is one of the best SNL hosts out there, and I’m glad to see him recognized.

Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series:

  • Jennifer Aniston (3o Rock)
  • Elaine Stritch (30 Rock)
  • Gena Rowlands (Monk)
  • Betty White (My Name is Earl)
  • Tina Fey (SNL-Presidential Bash 2008)
  • Christine Baranski (The Big Bang Theory)

I totally called it. Apparently, I was not out in left field when suggesting Tina Fey needed to be recognized somehow for her Sarah Palin performances. Way to go, TV Academy, you did well!

So overall, most nominations weren’t surprising, but there were a few good (and not so good ones). I was really excited to see Dr. Horrible’s Sing A Long Blog nominated as well as Motherlover (SNL–sequel to Dick In A Box). I look forward to Emmy night!
