EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Talking Glee with Jessalyn Gilsig (Terri Schuester): Part 1

April 12th, 2010

Glee is back in just one day! My countdown clock will soon become obsolete. I am so thrilled that it is returning, and I jumped at the chance to chat again with Jessalyn Gilsig, who plays Terri Schuester. I know there are huge Will and Emma fans out there (Wemma as they have become affectionately known), but I love Terri because I think Jessalyn plays her with such magnificence. She adds a little crazy to the mix but she also shows that nothing is ever perfect. If we got what we wanted right away on any TV show, it would be the easy way out, and if there is one thing about Ryan Murphy and his creative team I know for sure, it is that they are never ones to do this. There is a great Terri moment in the mid-season premiere (“Hell-O”) but as Jessalyn explains, it really heats up later. We talked about the amazing fashion on the show, interesting fan reactions, and her song.

Congratulations on all the success of the show. It has been an amazing season. What has awards season been like for you?
I think it just ended, or it just ended for me. I never understood when people said it’s a season that it’s really a season. I mean, it goes on. There are a lot of award shows (laughs) that I never knew about. It was amazing. The Golden Globes were amazing because we just — we couldn’t believe we were there. We sort of felt like we snuck in. And then when I got to the table and the whole cast was sitting there. And Chris was there and Mark’s there and Dianna, and we just looked at each other like what are we doing here? We’ve only shot 13 episodes (laughs). And then, a really fun one that I went to — this was the kind of thing I never knew about — was the Costume Design Awards. Lou Eyrich is our designer who also designs for Nip/Tuck, she was nominated, and she actually won that night. And Jayma and I went there in support of her and it was just really fun to see. We get so much attention from the show but we know that the show is such a collaborative experience and Lou is such a good example. She helps us find our characters, and she really sort of creates such a visual experience, so to see her get recognized and kind of put the spotlight on her…Jayma and I both agreed it was our best experience out of all the award shows.

Yeah, she does some incredible work on the show.
Doesn’t she? And she takes such big risks and I just feel like because there’s so many times that our characters are present but not necessarily speaking. I mean, especially for a lot of the kids. You know, they might have an episode where — I just saw one where Dianna, she doesn’t have much to say but just whenever she’s on screen, there’s still a story being told, and so much of that is also through what she’s wearing and her posture. So it’s just really interesting how everybody kind of tracks the evolution of our characters. And there are so many of them.

There are actually websites out there dedicated to the fashion on Glee.
Are you kidding? (laughs)

There’s a site called What Would Emma Pillsbury Wear?
What? Are you kidding me?

No you have to go check it out!
I mean, Emma’s wardrobe…that’s a perfect example. It’s ingenious. And of course, I selfishly, from Terri’s point of view, think Emma’s a genius because she dresses like a saint but she’s actually a husband stealer.

Oh she totally is…
But the way she dresses…it makes her look like a good person.

And I wanted to know what it was like filming that scene that last time we spoke, you referred to it as the reckoning between Will and Terri. It was so incredibly intense.
Was I right?

You were right, absolutely!
It was intense. This is why it is so much fun to work on Ryan Murphy’s show because it’s really fun to watch an audience get frustrated with the show. You know, a woman came up to me in the store the other day (laughs), it was so hysterical. I’m standing in a store with my daughter, and this older woman — I mean, she was probably in her 60s — she comes over and she says “You know what I don’t understand? How can he be so stupid?” (laughs)

Q&A: Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan: Executive Producers of Glee

April 8th, 2010

Glee returns next week and I am beyond excited. There are some amazing things coming up in the back 9. I recently had the chance to participate in a conference call/Q&A with Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan, two of the Executive Producers of the show. They talked about the extreme popularity of the show, the many relationships (and relationship possibilities) and the super talented guest stars.

It’s more than just a successful TV show, I mean with the CDs, the iTunes, and the tour. Are you ever surprised at how quickly it became so popular?

B. Falchuk: This is Brad Falchuk. I think we’re all very surprised. I mean we shot the first 13 episodes without any of them airing, except we did the special sneak screening of the pilot, so we had no idea what we had. We thought we had something very entertaining and good, but we didn’t know it was going to be quite so epically popular quite so quickly. We’re very pleasantly surprised, obviously. And we knew we were working hard to achieve that, but we didn’t know it was going to become the kind of phenomenon that it has become. We certainly couldn’t have expected that. It would have been inappropriate to expect that; it would have been hubris.

I. Brennan: This is Ian. Yes, on a daily basis it surprises me. We believe in the show and we knew it was good, but I had no idea. I thought that it would kind of be like a niche hit that was good and people liked, but somehow it just struck a cord with people, and that is a real, real pleasant surprise.

So the back nine episodes seem to sort of focus on how Finn will try to win Rachel back. What will we see from that?

B. Falchuk: Well the Finn/Rachel relationship is obviously a core to the show. It’s something that’s really sort of important because it’s the bridge of the two worlds that really in the pilot we were trying to put together, which was this sort of popular jock boy with this unique Glee girl. She represents Glee and he represents the rest of the world. And so we always are going to explore that relationship in many different ways, and it’s going to be a push and a pull in that sometimes it’s going to be him going after her and sometimes it’s going to be her going after him, and they’re always going to sort of be watching each other from afar. No matter what’s going on in their lives they’ll always have one eye on the other one. So we’ll see a bunch of that, and then by the end, I think by episode 22 of the back 9, so episode 9 of the last 9, we’ll reach a really temporary conclusion to that.

Well everyone’s favorite couple seems to be Puck and Rachel. What can you tell us of the developments between them that we’ll see in the back nine?

B. Falchuk: Well every good girl likes a bad boy, and there’s nobody more good than Rachel and nobody no more bad than Puck. So we had no idea it was going to be quite so popular, those two. We did it, sort of again like I said, we shot all those episodes in a bubble, and so we didn’t know that putting them in a relationship was really going to make people so excited. So we go back and explore that a little bit in the back nine, and like I said, we’ll continue to explore it. It’s high school, and everybody is always bouncing around to everybody else in high school, so that won’t stop.

I am curious is there has been maybe any pressure felt on a lot of the cast. It kind of seemed to just skyrocket, and it’s everywhere. You can’t escape; even when it’s been off for four months there’s always something going on, White House, record deals, anything like that. Has there been any pressure felt amongst you guys?

I. Brennan: This is Ian speaking. Speaking for everyone I mean we just got back from Chicago where we filmed Oprah and then went on to the White House; we just got back last night. I was shocked at how poised and professional everyone has been. And like Brad said earlier, this has been a journey of about a year for them. And so you can see how some of these kids, like Chris Colfer who is 19 years old, how poised and how awesome he is in interviews and on camera, and how much the kids like one another, and like us, at least for now. I think it’s an interesting time for them, but they all seem to be handling it really well, kind of the publicity and the fame and all of it. I could not have been more proud of them this weekend.

This question is specifically for Ian. I know you based the initial premise on your experiences singing in show choir at Mt. Prospect High School. I’m wondering what feedback you’ve heard from teachers and students involved in show choir?

I. Brennan: I mean I think it’s amazing. I’ve heard kind of rhetorically a lot of schools, I think, are going through, I mean we’re in California, which is having such an incredible budget crisis right now, and I think that’s happening in states everywhere, and I actually heard from a guy who worked I think in the public school system somewhere in Washington state and he was like yes, we’re having a ton of problems, programs are getting cut. The one thing he said, he was like the one thing no one is touching now is Glee Club, which is such a fascinating blow back from this show. Like if you said a year ago that we were going to kind of be a nationwide commercial for show choirs I would have never guessed it. So it’s a weird kind of snake eating its tail aspect for me to have kind of come full circle from when I was in mixed company. I was a cherub; I had the worst haircut and real bad t-zone issues, like just greasy forehead, super skinny in an ill-fitting tuxedo and a sequined tie. And 15 years later this would be happening. It’s all very, very strange and wonderful.

Glee News Roundup and First Look Video

February 17th, 2010

55 days until Glee returns, but who’s counting right? There has been a lot of news lately about the show so I thought I’d tie it all together nicely. Also, last night FOX released their newest promo for the back 9. If you are trying to stay spoiler free (why?), there’s really not too much they give away here. Things I observed: Glee club singing Hello/Goodbye, another Emma/Will kiss, Rachel wearing a “Team Finn” shirt, Terri’s back, Sue/Schue showdown, Sue talking about Madonna (this episode is going to be epic), and was there maybe a scene where Will sings to Emma or they sing a duet? Only time will tell!

And now here’s your dose of Glee news:

  • Kristen Chenoweth is returning
  • Idina Menzel will be guest-starring (although rumor has it that she will not be acting with Kristen)
  • J-Lo will be guest-starring
  • Jane Lynch is singing in the back 9. One word: Madonna
  • Judging from a picture posted on Naya Rivera’s twitter (she plays Santana), there might be a kiss shared between her and Heather Morris, who plays Brittany
  • The show will be casting three new characters for next season, which will be chosen by an open audition/casting call and the process will be featured on some sort of reality show or special.
  • We knew about this before the first 13 episodes ended, but it bears repeating: All. Madonna. Episode.
  • There will also be an episode with all original songs written by professional songwriters (and maybe one by Ryan Murphy??) I’m pretty excited about this. It’s just one episode with no covers, and I think it will be great.

And without further ado, the video promo/first look we’ve all been waiting for: (I have watched it about 5 times already)

Glee returns to FOX on Tuesday, April 13th.

GLEE renewed for a 2nd season

January 11th, 2010

I figured this news was coming sooner or later, but I’m so happy to share it with you. Glee has been renewed for a 2nd season and there will be a nationwide search for 3 new Glee cast members.

The announcement was made today by FOX at the TCAs (Television Critics Association panels). According to reports, Fox entertainment President Kevin Reilly said: ”We’ve loved ‘Glee’ ever since it was a pilot script, so it’s been an incredible thrill to watch the show take root and see audiences embrace these characters in such a huge way this season. The show is a true and rare gem in television. We couldn’t be more proud of what Ryan Murphy and the ‘Glee’ team have created so far, and can’t wait to see what they come up with for Season Two.”

And about the search for new cast members, Ryan Murphy added:

“Glee has always been about finding new fresh exciting voices. Anybody and everybody now has a chance to be on a show about talented underdogs. No matter who you are — a Broadway talent or a struggling singing waiter with a dream in the Midwest — you now have an opportunity to make that dream come true by posting your talent video and showing us what you can do. All the roles will be chosen form the video audition process, which is exciting and unprecedented.”

I am so thrilled about this news, as you know my love for Glee knows no bounds. In addition to the 3 new Glee cast members, there will be a special chronicling the search. I’m not sure how I feel about this special, but I’m interested to see how the new cast members will factor in, and how they are chosen. But there will be more Glee, and that is something to celebrate!

INTERVIEW: Jane Lynch (Sue Sylvester) of Glee & guest voice Ms. Eck on The Cleveland Show

January 10th, 2010

When the opportunity arose to participate in a Q&A with Jane Lynch, I jumped at it. I adore her on Glee, and any chance to speak with the multi-talented powerhouse was something I was not going to pass up. Lynch guest stars on The Cleveland Show tonight on FOX at 9:30 pm, as Ms. Eck, a new substitute teacher who encourages Roberta to change her appearance. Anything that Jane Lynch does, she knocks out of the park. From Party Down to Julie and Julia to Glee–you name it, she can do it. Her recent golden globe nomination for Glee is just one of the many accolades I am sure she will receive throughout her amazing career. I’ve seen a little clip of Ms. Eck, and even from the small part I saw, Lynch is hilarious. We got to ask her about not only The Cleveland Show, but also Glee (of course), her lengthy career, and what her biggest challenge has been.

What do you think of your animated counterpart, I mean besides the fact that she’s a stone cold hottie?
Well yes she is, have you seen the rendering of her body?

Yes.
Yes, she’s quite something.  I think those guys are just so funny, that whole Seth MacFarlane empire over there on Wilshire Boulevard, and so I was thrilled to do it, and then when I read the script I was just blown away.  I love my character, she’s very bitter, her glory days are behind her, and she’s out to punish of course Roberta for being so pretty.

I love your character on Glee. When you get to say and do things as Sue or as Ms. Eck, things that you probably would never even consider saying and doing as Jane, is it liberating, cathartic, therapeutic for you?
It is.  I always say when I put on that track suit I have a license to say anything I want.  I think it’s probably very good therapy, because I’m a much nicer person at home because I get it all out at work, and that kind of contemptuousness and heinous behavior is just very shallowly below the surface for me so it’s kind of nice.  I don’t have to dig deep for it, but it’s great I can do it there on the set and then I don’t have to do it at home.

Obviously, Ms. Eck and Sue share some similar DNA, but I’m wondering if they were to sort of come face-to-face and throw down the gauntlet who would emerge victorious in a battle of the wits?
Sue Sylvester would rein supreme.  I think that Ms. Eck has a chink in her armor.  I think she’s got a little more sensitivity and is prone to self doubt whereas Sue Sylvester has none of that.

It’s funny because whether it’s these characters or your character in 40-Year Old Virgin or things like that, a lot of them tend towards the acerbic, but then the summer in Julie & Julia we really got to see a different side of you.  Was it fun to sort of play the other side of the coin in that?
Yes, somebody who’s kind of eccentric and joy is the first thing that erupts from her, it’s her first instinct is to find out what’s passionate and wonderful about the situation and I don’t play a lot of those people.  Yes, it was very liberating to just be open and passionate and curious and kind spirited.

Did you have any input into how your animated counterpart would look like?
No, not at all.  The rendering was set when I showed up for the reading, and she’s hilarious looking I think.

Did they show it to you before you started taping?
Yes.  We did a table read, which is really an amazing thing to do, because Mike does all the characters, and to watch him sit there and have a scene with himself is something to watch, it’s genius at work.  But yes, I did get to see the rendering before at the table read.  I haven’t seen the show though, just the rendering of my character.

Best TV Of The Year: 2009

December 24th, 2009

As opposed to my Best of the Decade list which contained moments and episodes from the decade, this list will be less extensive because I didn’t want to limit myself to 5 best shows of 09. Keep in mind, this is in no particular order!

1.  Parks and Recreation: I did not enjoy this show in its first season. It was always all about “the pit” and getting rid of the pit. I adore Amy Poehler, but her role seemed a bit too Michael Scott-esque to me. However, whatever happened during the off-season was fantastic. Season two has been hilarious. The pit has taken a secondary role, and each character has had a chance to develop and grow. I didn’t care for Andy in the first season, but he has become one of my favorites. I think this show deserves a ton of recognition for really stepping up its game. It is a show I look forward to every week.

2. Lost: This past season has been phenomenal. Time changing, Dharma goodness, Hurley’s hilarious questions…it’s all been great. The creators are brilliant, and I have faith that they know exactly what they are doing and that the series finale is going to blow our minds.

3. How I Met Your Mother: This year has had such great episodes as The Playbook and The Front Porch (I will never forget how hard I laughed at suitjamas). While this show can have its up and downs, every episode makes me happy. And any excuse to watch Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris) wax poetic about his “bro code” and “lemon laws” is great in my opinion.

4. The Office: Season 5 started off (in ’08) with the Jim and Pam proposal, and ended on a pregnancy. And season 6 had one of the best episodes of The Office ever with the Jim/Pam wedding. It was perfect in so many ways–hilarious but also showed us what we have been wanting for 6 years. I may have watched the boat scene upwards of 10 times. The show is at its best truly brilliant, and it has been a great season thus far. I can’t wait to see more.

5. Party Down: This show on Starz Network has garnered quite a following for itself. Created by Rob Thomas (of Veronica Mars fame) it stars many of his VM colleagues, and is truly fantastic. It is a hilarious and wonderful portrayal of a catering company in Los Angeles, and its employees who clearly want to be more than just cater waiters. It returns for a 2nd season in 2010, where Kristen Bell will be back, and Megan Mullally joins the cast. This is a show you must see! Catch up with it on DVD before season 2 begins.

SAG Awards: TV Nominations

December 17th, 2009

The Awards season is clearly upon us. On Monday, the Golden Globe nominations were announced, and today, the SAG Awards. The choices were a bit different from the Globes, with a few surprises.

Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble – Drama Series

  • The Closer
  • Dexter
  • The Good Wife
  • Mad Men
  • True Blood

I am glad to see The Closer, The Good Wife and True Blood getting some attention, but where is Lost?

Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble – Comedy Series

  • 30 Rock
  • Curb Your Enthusiasm
  • Glee
  • Modern Family
  • The Office

All the usual choices here. Rooting for Glee or Modern Family (obviously), but it’s a tough category. I would have loved to see How I Met Your Mother nominated, because if any show is about its ensemble, it’s that one.

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor – Drama Series

  • Simon Baker, “The Mentalist”
  • Bryan Cransten, “Breaking Bad”
  • Michael C. Hall, “Dexter”
  • Jon Hamm, “Mad Men”
  • Hugh Laurie,”House”

All strong choices and nominees…it’s nice to see Breaking Bad get some attention. But again, where is Lost? Such a great show with nomination-worthy performances.

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor – Drama Series

  • Patricia Arquette, “Medium”
  • Glenn Close, “Damages”
  • Mariska Hargitay, “Law and Order: SVU”
  • Holy Hunter, “Saving Grace”
  • Julianna Margulies, “The Good Wife”
  • Kyra Sedgwick, “The Closer”

I guess the SAG Awards can differ in terms of how many nominees for each category. It’s a bit strange, but there are a lot of strong female leads out there, and I think all of these nominees are good choices.

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor – Comedy Series

  • Alec Baldwin, “30 Rock”
  • Steve Carell, “The Office”
  • Larry David, “Curb Your Enthusiasm”
  • Tony Shaloub, “Monk”
  • Charlie Sheen “Two and a Half Men”

All of these nominations seem decent, but where is Neil Patrick Harris for “How I Met Your Mother?”

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor – Comedy Series

  • Christina Applegate, “Samantha Who”
  • Toni Colette, “United States of Tara”
  • Edie Falco, “Nurse Jackie”
  • Tina Fey, “30 Rock”
  • Julia Louis-Dreyfus, “The New Adventures of Old Christine”

These nominations don’t make a ton of sense. If you look at the Ensemble nominations, only Tina Fey represents one of the shows. None of the other shows represented in this Best Actress category were nominated for Best Comedy Series Ensemble. I think all of them are great actors, but where is the nomination for Jane Lynch or Lea Michele? I understand there is no “Supporting Actress” category, but if Glee, Modern Family and The Office are nominated as shows, where is the recognition for the actresses that make up that ensemble?

Overall thoughts: While I understand that the SAG Awards are primarily focused on movies, if they are going to include television, I think there should at least be the addition of a couple more categories. I was glad to see Glee and Modern Family get nominated, but they were left off in the acting categories. Lost is definitely a fan-favorite, but has not gotten much critical recognition this year. Hopefully after its last season, the show will get what it deserves. I will be watching the SAG Awards regardless. Will you? What are your thoughts on this awards show and the nominations.
