Exclusive Interview Series: Chelsea Hobbs (Emily Kmetko) of Make It Or Break It

July 29th, 2009

Make It Or Break It (as I have said) is my favorite new show of the summer. The ABC Family hit centers around a group of four elite gymnasts, who are Olympic hopefuls. This is a fantastic show, and if you haven’t watched it, you really should. It was just renewed for 10 more episodes, and nominated for a Teen Choice Award, and it is all well deserved. I recently got a chance to sit down with the four stars and chat about their characters, the drama and what we might see in the rest of the season. Here is part one of the four part series–my interview with Chelsea Hobbs, who plays Emily Kmetko on the show.

First of all, I have to say, I really love the show.
Thank you.

Why don’t you tell us a little more about Emily. She’s big into compartmentalizing her life—keeping gymnastics separate from work separate from her family.
Emily’s moved around a lot in her life. She keeps everything separate—it’s a little bit about how she keeps everything in control. She does have so many different parts of her life, that she thinks if they all get mixed together, it’s just a big mess in her head. So it definitely makes her feel safe.

A big theme this season in general has been breaking the rules. How do you keep your character true to life?
I think we’ve all been there. We’ve all been in the place where someone tells us you can’t do something and you just want to do it more. So that definitely comes into play and every issue that happens on the show really does happen in real life. The writers have really kept true to what teenagers do and what people do in general. So it’s really easy for us to get to and relate to because it’s all very true to life.

Emily seems kind of, embarrassed (for lack of a better word) by her working class background. Can you speak a little bit about that?
Well I think that with Emily, I don’t know if she would feel so embarrassed with it if she wasn’t in the situation she’s in. I think it’s more the fact that she’s stepping into a new situation where people have a completely different lifestyle and she really is the outsider coming in with a scholarship. I think there’s a bit of humiliation for her on that level because people do treat her differently based on where she’s coming from. And you know, she’s coming into this situation the odd one out, so to speak, so that’s got to be really hard I think.

You’ve actually played a gymnast before. You were in The Perfect Body.
Yeah. I was actually just a really small role. It was one of my first film roles that I did, and I was one of the new gymnasts at that gym that the film took place in and the coach has to yell at me for my weight. (laughs) And actually the interesting thing is that the coach who had to yell at me was Brett [Cullen], who plays Payson’s father on the show.

That’s really funny.
Yeah, it’s quite a coincidence.

So did you talk to any gymnasts to prepare for this role? Did you watch a lot of gymnastics to prepare?
Definitely. We Youtubed like there was no tomorrow. Every video possible—just to kind of get really our head into that world. Because other than really the Olympics, I haven’t been in the gymnastics world at all. Just watching the Olympics. And then also, all of our doubles are awesome. They’ve been so amazing at anything we need to know…they’ll tell us. We study every walk…we study them as much as we can…listen to their stories, and it’s so great.

Have you learned any gymnastics skills while doing the show?
Well, it’s something that really does take time (laughs). We did a lot of training after the pilot, we learned how to build up the strength that it takes to do all the tricks. So slowly as we build up the strength, we’re able to do handstands, you know, one of the girls does a front walkover, and yeah, we definitely are slowly learning whatever we can learn.

What has been your favorite part of filming the show?
Learning something new. It sounds so cliché, but it’s so true. We really are blessed that we get to step into this crazy world and learn so much about it every day, and sit and watch Olympic gymnasts do things right in front of our eyes. It’s unbelievable. You never get bored on set.

Are you all friends off-set?
We’re all friends. We all get along so well. We go to each other’s birthday parties, we have barbecues, we all hang out all the time. We love each other.

Emily has a very interesting relationship with her mom. Do you want to speak a little bit about that?
Emily and her mom are actually a lot like me and my mom. It’s very different but it’s similar. You know, my mom was really super young when she had me, and so was Emily’s mom. It’s really great because your mom can relate to a lot of things but there’s also frustration involved in it and sometimes when your mom tries to become that much of a part of your life, you feel like you need the space. And I think that happens a lot with Emily and Chloe. I think that Emily feels like she likes to keep things separate so when her mom gets too involved, that really frustrates her.

Can you give us a little teaser what we might see from Emily in the rest of the season and in season 2?
I think Emily is going to build a lot as a character. She has a lot of learning to do as a gymnast. She doesn’t have the training in an elite gym that the other girls have so it’s going to really exciting to see where her gymnastics is going to go. I think Emily has the fire behind it, she just needs to learn how to take direction from the coach and trust. Just in general, she needs to trust—in her life, in gymnastics and I think everyone’s going to see her go to great places…as long as she does that.

Do you think the others will accept her? Do you think she will become a part of the group?
It’s interesting because I think it’s definitely going in that direction but at the same time, when you put competition in the mix, there’s going to be a problem somewhere. I think she’s going to become close to certain people, and I think that the competitive side of it could definitely throw some interesting drama in there…just because of jealousy and whoever does better than the other person, it’s always going to be like that.

What are your favorite tv shows and acting influences?
You know what’s funny? I don’t watch a ton of tv. I do like a lot of HBO and Showtime shows. And actresses I love are Meryl Streep, of course and Cate Blanchett, Kate Winslet. I really love people who are willing to get their hands dirty and step outside their comfort zone and shows that do the same thing. I really enjoy watching stuff like that. [And] I like some reality tv.

Than
k you so much for taking the time to speak with me.

Thank you so much.

Check back tomorrow for Part 2–my interview with Cassie Scerbo who plays Lauren Tanner.

Make It Or Break It Renewed For 10 More Episodes

July 27th, 2009

I try not to post a ton of news, but this is very exciting! In a press release today, Paul Lee of ABC Family said:

“I’m thrilled to be announcing the pick-up of our latest hit, ‘Make It or Break It.’ This show just roared out of the gate with its smart mix of rivalry and romance. Our Millennial audience just loves its great cast and addictive plot lines, and like our viewers, I can’t wait to see what happens next.”

I am also thrilled, Mr. Lee! This is my favorite new show of the summer, and I am glad it will be coming back in 2010.

Make It Or Break It–Week 4

July 14th, 2009

I have to say, I was extremely pleased with last night’s Make It Or Break It. It completely made up for my slight disappointment from last week. While the girls might not have done a lot of tumbling in the gym–they were in the gym for the majority of the episode. They were summoned to Sunday practice because their new coach Sasha Belov found out about the kegger party they attended. (see: cliched storyline from last week) While being forced to clean the mats, as well as condition (gymnastics term for torture), Payson, Lauren, Kaylie and Emily actually bond. Coach Belov has them write down their grievances with each other on paper and toss them in a garbage can as a symbol of leaving the past behind. He then of course, reads these complaints out loud. And while he watched the girls complete their tasks, he read “The Art of War.” I thought that was a subtle, nice touch on the part of the writers.

As the day progresses, the girls realize they should take the coach’s advice to heart, and come together as a team to go forward to Nationals. Emily shows a lot of sass and personality in this episode when she yells at the other girls for not understanding the real world. (Because, let’s face it the world of The Rock is a privileged one). Emily even starts to fit in a little after she expressed that no one had made her feel welcome in the little grievance exercise. The girls cover for her when she has to go to work at the Pizza Shack.
With lines like “What are you? Eharmony?” and the usage of the term “frenemy”–I was very entertained. At the end of the episode, Coach Belov asks Kim (Peyson’s mom) to manage The Rock (after subsequently being semi-threatened by Lauren’s dad to make him the manager). I thought this was a great moment. Peyson’s mom really does seem to care a lot about the girls and has their best interests in mind. Whereas Steve (Lauren’s dad), clearly does not.

I am excited to see how the rest of the season shapes up, as secrets are bound to come out (somehow Kaylie will find out about Lauren and Carter). And as a complete side note, Lauren’s dad is named Steve Tanner. And Steve dates DJ (well Candace Cameron Bure’s character is named Summer on this show). Coincidence?! I think not.

Make It Or Break It–Week 3

July 7th, 2009

I do really love this show, but I have to say last night’s episode was not my favorite. Here are my thoughts…

I understand they need conflict between the characters, but why did they break up The Rock just to get it back together again? I do like that Lauren (Cassie Scerbo) is back in the gym, because I have an unexplainable love for the frenemy/villain. And she’s a pretty good actor to boot. I also totally called the return of Sasha Belov…and he is pretty nice to look at, so well done ABC Family! I do enjoy the Bela Karolyi reference, scratch that two Bela references! And a Kerri Strug reference…nice!

I like Kaylie because she’s sort of a bad ass who is always breaking the rules, but I wish her dad would just find out about Carter already so this whole sneaking around storyline would cease to exist. Is that Jason Castro playing the random guy at kegger party? No?! Oh okay. Anyway, I can’t decide whether I want Emily to go out with Kaylie’s brother or Razor. I guess that’s the point of the whole plot line, huh? But do I sense a Lauren pregnancy coming on? She can say she’s cool after Carter basically sexed and ran, but I don’t believe it. I would enjoy if I predicted it, but I really hope I did not…

So while this episode was definitely entertaining, I watch this show for the fact that it centers around gymnastics. And in this episode, the girls are mostly outside of the gym. I suppose it is necessary to pull the characters out of their comfort zone every now and again, I just secretly wished for more flipping and routines. I look forward to next week!

What are your thoughts??

Summer Lovin' had me a blast

July 6th, 2009

Summer lovin’ happened so faaaast…Ahem…

For my first post, I thought it would be appropriate to write about the shows I am watching (and lovin’) this summer. While I may not have caught up with “Wipeout” or “I Survived A Japanese Gameshow” there are many other shows that have my full attention.

Make It Or Break It: Mondays, 9pm on ABC Family: Full disclosure here, I love gymnastics and would probably love this show even if it was truly terrible. But it’s not! I think it provides an entertaining look at elite gymnastics, with interesting story lines and snappy dialogue. As long as they keep flipping, I’ll keep watching.

Army Wives: Sundays, 10pm on Lifetime: Back for its third triumphant season, Army Wives is better than ever. Even Roland, the army husband, is given his due. I think the premise is incredibly strong, and the actors convey (what I imagine to be) a realistic portrayal of life on the base. And I don’t mind looking at Trevor LeBlanc (Drew Fuller) for an hour each week!

The Closer: Mondays, TNT, 9pm: The Closer is the top-rated (ad supported) cable show on television, and for good reason. Brenda Lee Johnson (played by the charming Kyra Sedgwick) leads a team of hilarious (but great-at-their jobs) detectives, as she closes cases (get it, the title of the show…). My favorite continuing storyline: the obvious sexual tension between Assistant Police Chief Pope (the wonderful JK Simmons) and Deputy Chief Johnson. And of course, who doesn’t love Flynn and Provenza?

Secret Life of The American Teenager: Mondays, ABC Family, 8 pm: What I thought might be an outlandish look at a teen pregnancy, has really proven itself to be just the opposite. It may have some of those moments but in it’s 2nd season, Secret Life (for short) is as good as a lot of teen shows get these days. I may not be in ABC Family’s target demographic, but I do enjoy the drama that centers around a group of friends, and their families.

Top Chef Masters: Wednesdays, Bravo, 10pm: I’m a big fan of the regular Top Chef, but was pretty skeptical about this offshoot. Where’s Padma? Why aren’t there the same contestants week-to-week? Stop confusing me Bravo! But, all that aside, it has exceeded my expectations. The chefs are real masters and it’s fun to drool over their creations. I encourage more shows like this in the future.

“It turned colder that’s where it ends…” or shows I wish hadn’t ended so soon:

Party Down: Starz network: I plan on writing a bigger feature on this show, but Rob Thomas captured my heart again. And he does so in extreme fashion with every episode (or just about) featuring a cameo from Veronica Mars. He had me laughing (and crying from laughter, and awkward moments) at Ken Marino’s antics as the head of Party Down, a Hollywood catering company. Lizzy Caplan, Adam Scott, and Ryan Hansen round out the cast, all playing actors or former actors with their own issues. And Jane Lynch adds hilarity to the party as well. Get it, party?!

In Treatment: HBO: I realize that this show didn’t extend into the summer, but Dr. Paul Weston (played by the sexy blue eyed Gabriel Byrne) was back for a 2nd season with all new patients. This show is one of the most unique on television, in that it makes you feel like you are going through therapy with each patient. If you can handle some self discovery each week, I know you are waiting with baited breath for the 3rd season like I am.

So tell me, what are you watching?? What should I watch? I want to check out Hung, and I definitely plan on catching up with True Blood once I finish the books (which I highly recommend if you are a fan of vampire lovin’). There are also some new ABC Family shows coming our way that I plan to check out as well.

Show me some comment love!
