ADVANCE REVIEW: Series Premiere of V

November 2nd, 2009

47001700“V” is another take on the 1980s miniseries about the world’s first encounter with a new alien race. In every major city across the world, an enormous ship arrives over their skylines causing chaos. The leader of the V’s Anna (Morena Baccarin from Firefly) comes on a huge television screen to offer to share their technology and declares that they come in peace. The V’s quickly build a cult-like following, but they may actually be hiding a more evil purpose for their visit (because are there really “good” aliens?)

While many quickly become enthralled with the V’s, some are very skeptical. FBI Counter Terrorist Agent Erica Evans (Elizabeth Mitchell–yay Lost!!) discovers a secret about the V’s that could threaten the lives of many people. But her son Tyler (Logan Huffman) is obsessed with the V’s and sees them as a new and great part of society. Chad Decker (Scott Wolf–absolutely loved him on Party Of Five) is a news anchor who gets the first exclusive interview with Anna, and slowly discovers there might be more to the V’s than they are revealing. Another V skeptic is Father Jack (Joel Gretsch), a priest who can’t come to terms with the V’s arrival.

There are conspiracy theories, the exploration of human nature, and incredibly interesting discoveries. I thought I couldn’t like any new drama as much as Flash Forward, but this is definitely just as good, if not better. Elizabeth Mitchell makes a great leading lady and her supporting cast is wonderful too. I’m not usually into science fiction/alien centric TV shows, but I really loved V. I think it poses a lot of very interesting questions, and it tackles the ever-present concern/question of devotion. I have only seen part of the mini-series (which I have heard is great), but my thought before I watched the pilot was how can they sustain a show that was made for a miniseries? Those thoughts were quickly shut down however, because I see a lot of potential. Maybe it won’t be a seven season drama, but I hope everyone tunes in because I for one, can’t wait to see more!

V premieres tomorrow night at 8 pm on ABC. Don’t miss it!
