2011 Golden Globe Nominations (Television) & My Thoughts
December 14th, 2010 by thetvchick
It’s that time again — awards season! Here is a complete list of all the nominations in the television categories along with my thoughts on who deserved the nominations and who I thought got snubbed (ahem, Parenthood and Parks and Recreation). Feel free to weigh in with your thoughts too! I love awards season. I can’t wait!
BEST TELEVISION SERIES – DRAMA
- BOARDWALK EMPIRE
- DEXTER
- THE GOOD WIFE
- MAD MEN
- THE WALKING DEAD
The two surprises here are Boardwalk Empire (which I hear is very deserving) and The Walking Dead. The Walking Dead is a bigger surprise because it got nominated after only one six-episode season. I am a huge fan of the show however and I’m glad to see it getting some award recognition. I will be pulling for The Good Wife though, because of my extreme love for that show.
Snubbed: No love for Parenthood or Friday Night Lights. And honestly people, I realize that The Vampire Diaries is a CW show but it is an extremely good drama that deserves more recognition. And what happened to In Treatment?
BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A TELEVISION SERIES – DRAMA
- JULIANNA MARGULIES, THE GOOD WIFE
- ELISABETH MOSS, MAD MEN
- PIPER PERABO, COVERT AFFAIRS
- KATEY SAGAL, SONS OF ANARCHY
- KYRA SEDGWICK, THE CLOSER
As much as I enjoy USA Network’s programming, and Covert Affairs, I don’t think Piper Perabo stood out to me as someone who should be nominated for any type of award. If anything from that show, Chris Gorham is the standout performer. I was a bit surprised to say the least to see Perabo’s name on this list. Everyone else makes sense to me, and I will be hoping for a Margulies win.
Snubbed: Lauren Graham from Parenthood (she stands out more than Perabo for me), anyone from Friday Night Lights (again, I guess this is expected but they did get Emmy love this year), and Nina Dobrev for killing it as two characters in The Vampire Diaries (a big wish, I know but if Perabo can get nominated…)
BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A TELEVISION SERIES – DRAMA
- STEVE BUSCEMI, BOARDWALK EMPIRE
- BRYAN CRANSTON, BREAKING BAD
- MICHAEL C. HALL, DEXTER
- JON HAMM, MAD MEN
- HUGH LAURIE, HOUSE
No big surprises here. I’ll be pulling for Michael C. Hall. There’s no one big I can think of that got snubbed.
BEST TELEVISION SERIES – COMEDY OR MUSICAL
- 30 ROCK
- THE BIG BANG THEORY
- THE BIG C
- GLEE
- MODERN FAMILY
- NURSE JACKIE
I’m happy to see Big Bang Theory up there as well as The Big C and Nurse Jackie. And of course, my love for Glee and Modern Family knows no bounds.
Snubbed: Parks and Recreation. Big time. Their second season was phenomenal and I’m surprised it didn’t get nominated.
BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A TELEVISION SERIES –COMEDY OR MUSICAL
- TONI COLLETTE, UNITED STATES OF TARA
- EDIE FALCO, NURSE JACKIE
- TINA FEY, 30 ROCK
- LAURA LINNEY, THE BIG C
- LEA MICHELE, GLEE
I’m glad to see Glee getting more nominations and Edie Falco.
Snubbed: Amy Poehler for Parks and Recreation.
BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A TELEVISION SERIES – COMEDY OR MUSICAL
- ALEC BALDWIN, 30 ROCK
- STEVE CARELL, THE OFFICE
- THOMAS JANE, HUNG
- MATTHEW MORRISON, GLEE
- JIM PARSONS, THE BIG BANG THEORY
Must Alec Baldwin get nominated every year (and generally win?) I like him a lot but let’s give some new people a chance.
BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A SERIES, MINI-SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TV
- HOPE DAVIS, THE SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP
- JANE LYNCH, GLEE
- KELLY MACDONALD, BOARDWALK EMPIRE
- JULIA STILES, DEXTER
- SOFIA VERGARA, MODERN FAMILY
Very happy to see Sofia Vergara and Jane Lynch get nominated. Also, Julia Stiles for her role as Lumen in Dexter is so deserving. But I find it weird that these categories are so lumped together.
Snubbed:Archie Panjabi is an EMMY winner for The Good Wife. She is amazing. Please explain to me why she’s not nominated. Also snubbed, Amy Ryan for In Treatment and I’d even say Debra Winger for In Treatment. Where’s the In Treatment love this year, Golden Globes?!
BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A SERIES, MINI-SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TV
- SCOTT CAAN, HAWAII FIVE-O
- CHRIS COLFER, GLEE
- CHRIS NOTH, THE GOOD WIFE
- ERIC STONESTREET, MODERN FAMILY
- DAVID STRATHAIRN, TEMPLE GRANDIN
Chris Colfer, Chris Noth and Eric Stonestreet are so deserving. The other nominees are very strong too. Chris Colfer really deserves to win this season though.
Snubbed: Ty Burrell and Jesse Tyler Ferguson for Modern Family. Peter Krause for Parenthood. Come on people!
BEST MINI-SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION
- CARLOS, SUNDANCE CHANNEL
- THE PACIFIC, HBO
- PILLARS OF THE EARTH, STARZ
- TEMPLE GRANDIN, HBO
- YOU DON’T KNOW JACK, HBO
BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MINI-SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION
- HAYLEY ATWELL, PILLARS OF THE EARTH
- CLAIRE DANES, TEMPLE GRANDIN
- JUDI DENCH, RETURN TO CRANFORD
- ROMOLA GARAI, EMMA
- JENNIFER LOVE HEWITT, THE CLIENT LIST
I will admit that Lifetime movies are my weakness. But we really live in a world where Jennifer Love Hewitt can say she’s a Golden Globe nominee and Lauren Graham cannot? Sigh.
BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MINI-SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION
- IDRIS ELBA, LUTHER
- IAN MCSHANE, PILLARS OF THE EARTH
- AL PACINO, YOU DON’T KNOW JACK
- DENNIS QUAID, THE SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP
- EDGAR RAMIREZ, CARLOS
No major thoughts on the Made For TV Movie category. But what are your Golden Globe Thoughts? Weigh in!

I mean honestly the only snub I was really bothered by was Cory Monteith of Glee, I know the character he plays is dumb but I wish the people who run these award shows would realize how much skill it takes to play a character like that.

Agree on the PH snubs. Though Lauren can actually say she’s a GG nominee, she was nominated in 2002 for Gilmore Girls

Lauren Graham is Golden Globe nominee from 2001, but I do agree with you. She deserves more recent nomination.

Piper over Nina…so sad. Covert Affairs is entertaining, but award worthy, I’m not so sure…definitely not when you come to grips with the fact that The Vampire Diaries is repeatedly snubbed. Bummed there was no Chuck love! Adam Baldwin should definitely get a supporting actor nod at some point!

Totally agree, the Parenthood, Friday Night Lights and Parks and Rec snubs are BANANAS. I mean is Showtime paying the Golden Globes or what? Because there’s no way The Big C should be nominated over Parks and Rec, The Office or Party Down while we’re at it, and seriously, who even watches United States of Tara? I mean I love Toni C. but cancel that show already and certainly don’t nominate it anymore. And Boardwalk Empire is beautiful, I’ll give you that, but better and more consistent than Parenthood and Friday Night Lights? I think not. Also nominating someone from Hawaii Five-O and Covert Affairs?! That’s just wrong!

And also really hoping Chris Colfer wins this year! He really deserves it and would be great to see someone new and super talented win. Also will be pulling for Jon Hamm or Bryan Cranston, Elizabeth Moss or Julianna M., Tina Fey, Steve Carell, Jayne Lynch or Sofia V. Mad Men and Modern Family or Glee for the wins too.

Biggest snub? It’s easily BREAKING BAD for best series. I mean, it’s routinely called TV’s best series by critics, won both male acting Emmys last year, and just had its best season yet. It should be there instead of Boardwalk Empire, which everyone in the whole world agrees was a big disappointment.
Also, sad to not see LOUIE get any love for best comedy. Smartest comedy on TV for sure.

Also I’m rooting for Idris Elba even though I haven’t seen Luther – gotta pull for Stringer Bell!

I’m with you on Idris Elba. Haven’t seen it but I’d vote for him in anything! Stringer Bell always represents!!!

As usual, the nominations for The Golden Globes are filled with fail. I could complain about several other silly choices, but I’ll just say that after her brilliant performance in Fringe this season, Anna Torv’s absence in the nominations is my biggest gripe.

There are always snubs, but Piper Perabo is total b.s. (She’s one reason why I can’t watch that show, despite Christopher Gorham.) Gotta agree with @Katie on that, as well as Scott Caan from Hawaii Five-0 though he is about the only actor with a fleshed out character on a show I can’t believe I still sorta watch.
Must agree that I had the snubs, particularly in lieu of more deserving people just so they can nominate someone again, or a random big name. My biggest rant will be that the dis the very shows they should recognize, those that dare to be creative and different like Fringe and Vampire Diaries.. hmm I feel an emergency blog post coming on. Stay tuned…

Piper Perabo – this is insane.
SONS OF ANARCHY – I’m so not getting the constant snubbing of this because it is ridiculously awesome.

[...] Nina Dobrev is not another pretty face on a stick figure body; girl’s got game on a show I think more people should watch. Playing more than a dual role via flashbacks and deceptions, Dobrev is one of many reasons I consider The Vampire Diaires must-see TV as she is killing it. [...]
