FROM THE SET: VIDEO INTERVIEW: Shay Mitchell (Emily) and Troian Bellisario (Spencer) from Pretty Little Liars
August 24th, 2011 by thetvchick
Pretty Little Liars has had a pretty crazy and amazing second season. It is about to wrap up the first half with its mid-season finale next week, and I can’t wait. I recently had the chance to catch up with the cast on set, and they had some very interesting things to say about next week’s episode. Shay Mitchell (who plays Emily) and Troian Bellisario (who plays Spencer) discuss how A is going to challenge the girls in the mid-season finale, the big prequel Halloween episode and their characters’ respective relationships. I also chatted with Shay a bit after (not on video) and she talked about where she wants to see her character go after the mid-season finale, Emily’s girlfriends and what character she’d like to play in an alternate universe.
Here’s what else Shay Mitchell had to say:
Are Maya and Samara going to interact at all?
I don’t know. Thus far, I don’t think so. But that would be quite interesting. I actually keep begging the writers to have all of Emily’s girlfriends come back and have this huge meeting with all of them. That’d be very funny.
Where would you like to see Emily go after this mid-season finale?
I want to see Emily have a serious relationship. I keep watching the episodes — I watch every episode, and when I see the scenes where Aria running into the sunset with Ezra and jumping, I want Emily to have that too, with a serious girlfriend. So, we’re pushing for that. But I do feel like this is very necessary for her to have a lot of interactions with different girls so that she can really know what she likes. This is all new for her. So I think dating is important.
Are we going to see your parents come back?
I hope so. I love the scenes with my parents. But, you know, Dad stopped by for a bit with that whole hospital scene, thank goodness he was there for that. I think so. They can’t stay in Texas forever. They have a young girl who’s going through some crazy stuff. They have to check in every once in a while.
What’s your favorite scene from the mid-season finale?
I wish I could tell you what my favorite scene was!
What should viewers be looking out for?
A lot of action. I can say that I think every episode is like a feature film condensed into [44 minutes]. But, this season finale, there is so much action in it. It was so much fun for me. My ideal future job would be action/Bond running in heels with a big gun — so getting to do any sort of action in the show is so much for me. And there was a lot of it. A lot of it. And the girls have a lot of scenes together, which is really cool, too. But, I really want to talk to everyone after the season finale to be like, “I told you so!” Isn’t it crazy?
Do you think the girls will ever go out of Rosewood?
Oh yeah, definitely! I’m pushing the writers to bring them to Europe. Why not? Let A bring them Italy and Paris and everything, I would love that. But they can’t stay in Rosewood forever. I think A has the tools to drive them to get them to go somewhere else, outside of their comfort zone of Rosewood. So, yeah, be on the lookout for that. I hope it happens. New York, possibly?
In an alternate universe, what other character would you play if you could?
Because I play the sweet one out of the group, I would like to play Alison, who is so conniving. You’re just like, “You’re evil!” I think it would be really fun to play her character. All the girls I think would be so much fun. But I have to say Alison.
It has been implied that Emily had a crush on Alison. Are we going to see that in the Halloween episode?
You will, yeah! Because it is flashbacks. And even in a couple of the other flashbacks that we’ve seen in previous episodes, you see Emily’s affection for Alison. Even in the library scene where she kisses her, you get to see that alone in the flashback and why she was so hurt when Alison disappeared. It’s really nice the scenes that she has with Alison.
What has your fan interaction been like?
I love talking with them. I like asking them who they want to see Emily with. They ask my opinion, too. For me, I always say I can’t choose one of the girls. I think all of them have affected Emily in a different way. They’re helping her grow right now. I like all of the girlfriends Emily has had. I wish some of the characters that I used to watch on TV would have had Twitter and I could ask them questions. It’s so neat.
Be sure to tune in on Tuesday, August 30th at 8 PM to ABC Family for the big mid-season finale of Pretty Little Liars!
