INTERVIEW: Cress Williams (Lavon Hayes) from Hart of Dixie
October 2nd, 2012 by thetvchick
Hart of Dixie is like an old school WB drama in the best possible of ways. I often find myself wishing I could escape to the fictional southern town of Bluebell (I mean, something has to be in the water over there, you’ve seen the guys, right?). It’s also the little show that could. It survived not-so-great ratings and a tough time slot because fans stood behind it. And I’m so glad they did. It has all the makings of a good CW drama: love triangles, deception, teen romance, but there’s comedy and emotionally resonant moments all mixed in. The show returns tonight and the question on all of our minds is who will Zoe choose? Are you Team George or Team Wade? But how does the Mayor, Lavon Hayes, fit in? Does he have any shot of repairing things with Lemon? How will his relationship with Zoe turn out after all of last year’s drama? I caught up with Cress Williams (Lavon) at the CW Upfronts in May and he shared his hopes for Lavon this season, his favorite part of playing the Mayor of Bluebell and talked about a possible love interest.
What do you want to see from Lavon in season two?
I would like to fix some relationships. I want to make sure that Zoe and I are okay. And I would like to see if George and I could be okay and be friends again. And I would like to see Lemon chase me around. And for me to keep turning her away. That would be fun. Just for a little while. And I would like to court someone who’s available.
So maybe a new love interest perhaps?
Yeah. What’s great about our town is we have a great, recurring guest cast. And we keep adding more people and they’re so talented and it’s great to see them play. So maybe something somewhere out of that. I think Annabeth is available. We’ll see what happens.
Do you think we might see Wade’s brother come back, Justin Hartley?
Yeah, it’s funny because his new show comes on after our show. I’m not sure where they film [though].
What’s been your favorite part of playing Lavon?
The comedy part of it, honestly. I’m having so much fun. But the little, my Lavon “Naw, naw, naw” and all that stuff. It’s been a lot of fun.
Have you enjoyed playing the mayor?
Yeah, yeah. And just the quirkiness of it is something that I don’t always get to do. I love doing it and then I love the affect that it has on people, like out in the world.
Be sure to tune in tonight to the CW at 8 PM for the season premiere of Hart of Dixie!
