INTERVIEW: Nina Dobrev (Elena) from The Vampire Diaries

October 18th, 2012 by

The Vampire Diaries is back tonight for the second episode of the season, and it is fantastic. Damon’s super sad about losing his bff Alaric, and Elena has some trouble with her transition. We also meet Pastor Young’s daughter, played by Grace Phipps (from Nine Lives of Chloe King) and Connor, the vampire hunter continues to wreak havoc on Mystic Falls. I recently had the chance to catch up with Nina Dobrev at Comic Con, who talked about the excitement and challenges of playing a new vampire and what kind of vampire she sees Elena becoming.

So are you excited about the challenge of playing another vampire?
Yes. Definitely excited about it because when you’re doing a show for this long you need change. And I have the best of all the scenarios, I got to play two characters, but Elena, as much as she was evolving, she needed to evolve into this next step despite the fact that she didn’t want to at all.

What are you looking forward to this season for your character?
To go on the journey with her and sort of see how she deals with things, and it’s sad though. She never wanted this at all and now she has no choice. Not just for today, but forever. And she’s stuck with this lifestyle, but who knows. Everything happens for a reason, and maybe one day she’ll be really thankful and really happy that she gets to live through different eras and different times. Maybe she will leave all these boys behind and try to find a cure for cancer or make some good of it.

What kind of vampire do you see Elena becoming?
At first, sad and because all of your emotions are heightened she’s probably gonna be hormonal. Like you’re going through puberty in a way. She’s going to be completely upset at times and then happy at times. It’s a rollercoaster ride. Luckily the audience gets to watch and go on the ride with her.

Were you surprised when you found out that she met Damon first?
I was. Oh my God. When I read that episode, I was like (shocked gasp) “No!”. And it almost made me love Damon more for not telling her. That was his act of selflessness as well. Just like Elena, he kind of did what she always wanted him to do and he didn’t just say that so she would choose him. He wanted her to choose him for who he was.

Is it hard not to bring a little bit of Katherine in when you’re playing Elena as a vampire?
Yeah, I mean, it’s not hard, but that’s going to be my biggest challenge because I’m going to have to keep reminding myself. Because when you’re doing a scene as a vampire, all you want is to be a badass because you’re a vampire, but I have to make sure I’m like a tame badass or like a guilty vampire. That’s been my whole thing, making them two different people, and the fact of the matter is they’re both going to react differently in the same situations because they’re different people and they have different thought processes. But challenge is always good.

The Vampire Diaries airs tonight at 8 PM on the CW.
