The Closer is back for its 7th and final season tonight! While I am thrilled it’s back, I am legitimately sad there won’t be anymore Brenda Leigh Johnson after this season. Brenda Leigh (played by the amazing Kyra Sedgwick) and her Major Crimes crew: Provenza, Flynn, Gabriel, and (former) Captain Pope are hilarious, heartwarming, and one of the best ensembles in drama today. And that’s a big statement coming from me. There are few shows that handle the “case-of-the-week” formula in a way that doesn’t get stale, while keeping us interested in the characters, and The Closer does a wonderful job of just that.

The season premiere, titled “Unknown Trouble,” is actually one of my favorite episodes to date. It centers around The Major Crimes unit trying to solve a case involving the murder of a rap star. The opening sequence is brilliantly shot, weaving rap music into the action as I’ve never seen before. Brenda’s entrance, timed with the beat, is just fantastic. There are tons of twists and turns along the way, including Sergeant Gabriel knowing some of the victims’ and wanting to protect their families. Also, be prepared for a crazy ending. I don’t want to spoil too much, but the premiere sets up some interesting things for the final season. What will Pope’s (new) role be in all of this? How are Brenda and Fritz going to continue to work together? Now that there’s most likely going to be a spin-off with Captain Raydor (LOVE her!), how will that factor into things? One thing is for sure, I really wish this show wasn’t approaching its last season. It’s going to be a bittersweet one for sure.

Be sure to tune in at 9 pm tonight to TNT for the 7th season premiere of The Closer!
