REVIEW: Make It Or Break It “Time Is Of The Essence”

Last night’s episode of Make It Or Break it was quite intense, probably one of the most intense of the series. An NGO supervisor comes into the USATC to see how the new coach is doing, and it’s not good news. The team isn’t really gelling and they don’t trust him as a coach. And an even bigger rift is caused when the truth behind the leaked kiss cam video is revealed.

The Rock girls and KP (side note: I am kind of glad she may be accepted into the “in” crowd) are voicing their concerns about the new coach. He yells all the time and no one is advancing. Payson takes it upon herself to complain to the NGO guy so the NGO guy gives the new coach 48 hours to get the team to a better place. Meanwhile, Lauren still continues to struggle with her health but doesn’t want to admit it to anyone. She has a pretty rough fall but claims she just slipped.

We also start to see alliances continue to blossom. KP and Kaylie are working very well together (KP is the one who offers to ask her mom about the kiss cam video), while Lauren and Payson are starting to become real friends. Payson confides in Lauren about her new crush Rigo and Lauren seems to be turning over a new leaf. Then there’s troublemaker Jordan. She tries to psych Lauren out by telling her that Kaylie abandons all of her friends. The last thing Lauren needs is to be in a weird headspace about everything given what’s going on.

In order to bring the girls together, the coach invites them over to watch training videos and watch Remember The Titans. In the middle of everything, Jordan causes trouble and everyone starts yelling and it comes out that Lauren sent the Sasha/Kiss Cam video to Ellen Beals last year. Payson says she already knew that and runs out. She clearly didn’t know but didn’t want to appear weak in front of her teammates. Lauren apologizes and said she never meant to hurt Payson (it was about Summer) and she was so excited when Payson called her an actual friend because everyone always ends up leaving her. Payson’s not ready to forgive Lauren yet but they go back inside to their mandatory meeting. Coach asks who went to the NGO behind his back and Lauren takes the blame (way to go, Lo!) All the girls admit that they need to hear positive reinforcement, they need him not to yell so much and they also don’t understand his decisions. He explains the pairing up and the girls slowly seem to come around. He promises to take what they said to heart and start fresh the next day. And I forgot to mention Rigo comes by to tell Payson he wants to be her new boyfriend and to kiss her. This was such a sweet moment, besides the weird ‘change my status’ on a social network line.

That night, Lauren tries to reconcile with Payson in their room. Payson is slowly coming around but makes Lauren promise that she’ll see a doctor to figure out what’s wrong. Lauren makes Payson promise to keep it between the two of them and Payson seems to imply that she will be able to forgive Lauren, just not right away. The next day at the gym, everything has changed. Coach is much more encouraging and the girls are hitting their skills. Success!

So, if I had to pick the Olympic team right now out of the six girls, I would make Jordan the alternate because I don’t like her much. KP is growing on me a lot. I think Nicole Anderson is actually one of the stand out performers on the show right now, so I love seeing more of her. I’m curious to see if we will see the Olympic Trials on the show. If we do, do we get to see London as well? Or just Trials and the girls headed off to London? I’m loving the girls at the USATC and I’m excited to see how everything plays out.

Make It Or Break It airs Monday nights at 9 PM on ABC Family.
