REVIEW: Glee “Prom Queen”
May 11th, 2011 by thetvchick
Last night’s episode of Glee titled “Prom Queen” was a touching episode. It’s main focus was on bullying, and coming to terms with your sexuality. Heavy stuff for a show about a Show Choir, but we’ve seen this before with Glee (a lot) and I usually eat up the emotional episodes. Last night’s wasn’t as hard hitting as some have been (hard to believe I know), but to me, the one thing missing was amazing music. There were some great numbers, don’t get me wrong. But most songs were New Directions performing at Prom and I think they could have gone more top 40 with it. All that said, there were some amazing moments in this episode, and I think Chris Colfer probably earned his Emmy nomination again. There was also an amazing scene between Rachel and Quinn that perhaps will develop into something interesting.
So, it’s Junior Prom time at McKinley! Mercedes wasn’t asked. Aw. Rachel says they will go together. I enjoy this nice Rachel. The diva in her will come out soon, I’m sure. Kurt asks Blaine! Double awww! Blaine had a terrible dance experience at his old school and got beaten up. Kurt understands if he doesn’t want to go but he says yes. Rachel and Mercedes ask Sam if he’d take them both to prom. They have a budget. He says yes. Aw! So much cuteness.
Rachel sings “Rolling in the Deep” and Groffster joins in. GROFF! JESSE ST. JAMES!! I adore him to pieces but this song wasn’t made for him, sadly. I do love them together more than anything on this show maybe…he is adorable. Finn tells Rachel she should be careful because Jesse hurt her before. She says it’s not his call. Later, Artie interrupts Home Ec Class to sing “Isn’t She Lovely” to Brittany. This is super cute. The guys come in to help him. Brittany says no to his prom invite, because she’s still upset about the stupid comment. Artie agrees to spike the punch bowl for Puck because he has nothing to live for. And in awesome news: Blaine is going to jam with New Directions at prom. Woo! Criss is amazing. Kurt’s ensem is hilarious. Burt and Blaine agree that he should tone it down so there’s no trouble. Kurt sticks to his guns. At school, the Bully Whips are in action and Kurt tells Karofsky he sees how much he’s hurting. And here comes the genuine apology from Karofsky. That was really what I was looking for a few weeks ago. My hope is that Karofsky does find the courage to come out sometime soon.
And then it’s Prom night! The double “non-date” with Jesse, Rachel, Mercedes and Sam is cute. Jesse wants to start a dance studio for Show Choirs. Ha! So this is how they work him back into the show. Whatever the case (and despite the fact that I wanted him to brush his hair A LITTLE MORE), I’m glad he’s back. Finn and Jesse have it out a little bit over Rachel, and Mercedes keeps the peace. At Prom, Puck signs “Friday” with Artie and Sam. Ugh this song. I mean it’s kind of funny, but ugh. Although, if anyone could make me not hate this song, it’s Glee. Rachel sings a pretty good ballad: “Who Do You Think You Are?” and Finn seems to have some regretful glances at her. Sam asks Mercedes to dance and tells her she looks beautiful. So sweet.
Soon after, Sue catches Artie putting alcohol in the punch. Oh Artie! Blaine sings “I’m Not Going To Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance” with Tina and Brittany as backup. Oh Criss, you are a gift. I enjoy that Glee is delving into the indie genre, and I enjoyed this song. I just like when he does pop stuff a little better. When Jesse decides to mack it on Rachel on the dance floor, Finn confronts him. Just as Sue’s about to remove a tooth from Artie, Finn and Jesse get into a fight, so she’s pulled away to deal with that. Time for King and Queen! Prom King is Karofsky. Prom Queen is Kurt. Damn spoilers for being right. Kurt storms off. He feels as if things are still the same, and no progress has been made. The sad reality of the matter is that high school can be cruel. I just wish things had changed for Kurt.
As everyone runs off crying about not winning Prom Queen, one very powerful scene goes down in the bathroom. Quinn is devastated, and she slaps Rachel because she thinks no one voted for her because they know Finn would rather be with her. Quinn says she’s going to leave the school, so does Santana. Quinn is terrified to lose it all. Rachel helps Quinn, and I saw maybe a glimmer of friendship. But judging from next week’s promos, perhaps it was fleeting. Quinn’s utter honesty in this scene was just heartbreaking and wonderful. I loved Rachel telling her she was beautiful. And I really love that Dianna Agron has been given some shining moments this season. Anyway, Kurt decides to go back into the auditorium and become Prom Queen. Kurt gets his crown and everyone ends up cheering for him. Karofsky and Kurt have to dance. Awkkkward. Karofsky storms out but Blaine comes to his rescue. So adorable. Mercedes and Santana sing “Dancing Queen” to end the episode which was super cute.
Overall, a very solid episode. For me, it’s all going to come down to Nationals and I cannot wait to see the scenes they shot in my neighborhood! I’m curious to see if the Rachel/Jesse relationship might stick into next season. I want to see Karofsky come out. And I’d love to see Santana do the same. And while we are at it, a real love interest for Mercedes! A girl can dream, right?? But as far as Prom Night goes, this one was pretty entertaining and having Groff back was magical. If he and Criss duet, my head might legitimately explode. I’m on the fence about Quinn/Finn or Quinn/Rachel…I like them both, I suppose, and I enjoyed Brittany’s “I choose me” decision ala 90210. I’m excited to see Will and Emma’s relationship progress, and what amazing musical numbers the show has in store for us as we get to Nationals.
Glee airs Tuesday nights at 8 pm on FOX.
