REVIEW: Make It Or Break It “Requiem for a Dream”
May 3rd, 2011 by thetvchick
Last night’s episode of Make It Or Break It was a real heart breaker. I was hoping deep down that Emily wouldn’t have the baby (I’m not saying abortion, but I was thinking it might have been a false positive on the pregnancy test). Unfortunately, that’s not the case and there goes another ABC Family show with a pregnancy. I will say, however, that the way they chose to handle the whole thing was better than I expected. More on that later. Despite this episode’s general lack of gymnastics, I did enjoy the truly intense emotional scenes and the very end. I’m especially happy for Kaylie and her healing process.
The episode starts with the doctor (played by Gabrielle Carteris — my have you come not-such-a-long-way Andrea Zuckerman) giving Emily pregnancy “options.” Emily makes it to the gym in time for an interview about The Rock team. Sasha tells her she needs to make the decision ASAP. Emily says she’ll make the decision when she finds out about the World Team for sure. I suppose I understand where she’s coming from, but I don’t want to see Emily give up on her dream. Meanwhile, Lauren gets all bitchy about Sasha and Summer and tells Steve to ask Summer to marry him. Ugh, manipulative. She already has the ring picked out.
At Kaylie’s recording studio, Damon tells Kaylie that the label likes the song with Kaylie and wants them both to sing it. Damon confides in Kaylie that love shouldn’t be so hard. I think she feels a little vibe between them but gets back to singing. Later, Kaylie tells the good news to the therapist and admits that she’s so happy about the song. The therapist will allow her to get back to gymnastics if she wants to. She doesn’t look super thrilled, though. I am happy Kaylie can finally get back in the gym. I look forward to her new outlook on life.
And then the intense discussion time comes. Emily asks if Chloe has a problem with ending the pregnancy. Chloe says that she doesn’t. She wants different things for Emily. This is a rough, tear-filled conversation. Whew. Emily asks if Chloe if she thinks it’s wrong. Emily doesn’t, but she storms out anyway. What a tough thing to grapple with. I actually legitimately liked the way the show handled this conversation. No one got high and mighty about their opinions and they both listened to each other. I wish we saw more of that on other TV shows. Chloe decides to talk to Sasha. Sasha explains Emily can’t have it her way every time.
Back at Casa Crazy, Steve asks Summer to marry him and she says she needs to think about it. Haha Lauren! You don’t deserve Summer. At the gym, Lauren has the “twisties” (which is a mental thing). Sasha wants to help her and despite her weirdness over the whole Payson thing, she agrees to his help. Then, The NGO tells Emily she has been officially reinstated on the World Team. Oh boy. Payson’s all happy then confused because Emily storms out. She admits to Payson she’s pregnant. Payson gets all judgmental. Emily doesn’t believe she can be great, and thinks the pregnancy is a sign to give up gymnastics. Oh, Emily. First, let me commend Chelsea Hobbs on an amazing episode. This scene was just the beginning. She really brings out Emily’s raw emotions and I loved it. But I really didn’t want Emily to give up gymnastics. Later, Sasha confides in Summer about Emily’s pregnancy. Sasha admits he doesn’t want Emily to have the baby. Summer gets all high and mighty about it. I respect people’s opinions but Summer clearly doesn’t understand where Sasha is coming from, either. Apparently, their difference of opinion triggers Summer to say “yes” to Steve. Oh man. This won’t end well.
Back at the Cruz household, things get intense with the whole song situation, and Damon and Kaylie kiss. Kaylie pulls away. She feels like it’s wrong. Aw Kaylie, you’re such a good person. Meanwhile, at the Kmetko household, Chloe says she’ll support Emily no matter what. Marcus shows up to talk to Emily, and tells her they can take care of it. Emily gets all mad and talks about pressure and choices. Whew! She says Damon will understand, and storms out. There has been a lot of storming out in this episode! Intense emotions! Emily, at least think about your decisions before you decide to run off with your boyfriend who you have blown off time and time again and who just made out with your teammate. Emily then tells Damon she’s pregnant and they can have their dreams come true. She’s talking a little crazy here! I don’t think Damon is so happy. And I’m glad he wasn’t. Imagine getting this sprung on you when your career is just starting and you kind of thought you broke up with your girlfriend? I thought this scene was pretty great as well — just between the hope in Emily’s face and the shock in Damon’s.
At the gym, Lauren is working out with Sasha to get rid of the “twisties.” She gets all teary (fake teary). She thought Sasha didn’t notice her. They hug. I want this to be a legitimate beginning to a new relationship, but I don’t think it will be. My suspicions are proven when later, we see that Lauren has a training DVD with Sasha and is going to send it off to The NGO. UGH HATE. I don’t think this is meant to “redeem” Sasha for the Payson DVD. It’s probably to show how he was “inappropriate.” Seriously, Lauren, get off your awful high horse.
Anyway, Kaylie feels awful and comes clean to Emily about the kiss. Later, the girls come over to see Emily, but they were too late. She got on a bus to Vegas to see her Godmother. She decided to have the baby. Oh no!! Cue the flashback montage of Emily doing gymnastics! You regret your decision don’t you, Em! I’m not going to say Emily should have had an abortion or whatever, because I don’t want to get all political. I do however wish that they didn’t have to send her off the show. I am assuming she will come back by finale time…but who knows?
At the end of the episode, Kaylie, Payson and Lauren go to their old gymnastics camp. The girls talk about how Emily could have gone all the way. Eyes…welling. Kaylie admits to her friends that she wants to go back to gymnastics and doesn’t want to lose everything. Aww! The parents and Sasha find them and let them have their moment. They all decide to camp out together. Sasha is the new World Team coach. Yay!
Overall, I really enjoyed this episode. I thought the intense emotions were just what the show needed to sort of bring it to another level (if that makes sense). I am so happy Kaylie will be back in the gym (really, I just like when any of the girls are in the gym). I am sad that Emily won’t be around for a while. I was really enjoying her new-found friendship with Payson. I legitimately hope that Lauren gets what’s coming to her very soon because seriously, Lauren, you are quite ridiculous. I look forward to Summer regretting her decision to marry Steve (come on, you know that will happen) and to seeing how the girls train for Worlds. I am also very curious to see if there will be a relationship between Kaylie and Damon. I’m kind of liking that idea. I can’t wait to see what’s next.
Make It Or Break It airs Monday nights at 9 pm on ABC Family.

Well, I’m with you on being disappointed about the pregnancy. I was a little apprehensive when they first started discussing abortion as an option b/c it’s such a dicey issue, but I agree with you that they handled it well.
I know Summer will regret saying yes to Steve, but I feel like maybe her character should just stay single for awhile. I used to really ship her & Sasha, but it’s always been clear that they differ so much in their fundamental beliefs, and I think this episode emphasized that Summer’s not willing to compromise her beliefs (& why should she?) for Sasha.
So you think Lauren sent the tape in to be manipulative? I kind of thought it was her trying to make up for her mistake (b/c she’s maybe, just maybe showing a tiny bit of growth?) by showing the NGO what really happened that night. And apparently it worked b/c Sasha was named head coach. But…it is Lauren, so maybe you’re right. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
It was hard for me to really enjoy this episode b/c the major stoyline was something I really didn’t want to happen, but I cannot deny that there was some truly amazing performances from the actresses!

Lauren actually wasn’t being manipulative with the NGO. I think you missed the note on the package to the NGO that asked them to please watch the whole video. Remember, Lauren has previously edited the tape so it didn’t show Sasha’s reaction and pushing Payson away.
I have to admit, I really wasn’t a fan of this episode. Sure, there were some intense performances but the whole pregnancy thing was just annoying – and many of the scenes didn’t seem to go together overall for me. I don’t know what it was, maybe some of it just seemed contrived or pushing the storyline too hard.
And, like you said, so much is going to be predictable – Summer and Steve, some sort of drama with Sasha as World coach, etc.
I am looking forward to seeing the Worlds training and Kaylie back in the gym. I think she is such a completely different person, it will be interesting to see how she fits in now. Hopefully there will be more gymnastics, too!

I’m a new-comer to your blogs and I love how you combine recapping the episodes and giving your own opinion. It’s refreshing to see other people’s takes on one of my favorite shows.
I actually DO want Summer to marry Steve; I was skeptical with their relationship when a romance between her and Sasha began to kindle, but I’ve always liked Steve and Summer’s relationship much better. I think she brings out the best in Steve and Lauren, and I think Lauren really needs a woman and role-model like her in her life. Like she said she could “feel it in her bones” that she was meant to be Lauren’s mother, and I think Sasha is just too independent to really *want* a relationship.
Also, I disagree about Lauren’s intentions with the CD, because at the end they broke the news about Sasha going to World’s as the coach, which I am guessing is exactly BECAUSE Lauren showed them the entire footage, so they had no more suspicion or reason to not let Sasha go as the coach.
But I completely agree with the whole Emily thing; like you pointed out in last episode’s blog, they kind of had to write something in because of Chelsea Hobbs’ pregnancy, but there’s enough teen pregnancy in The Secret Life of American Teenager in the hour preceding Make It or Break It to make me puke, so it was disappointing to have Emily be found pregnant. And while I love her character, and am sad to see her go and leave gymnastics, I hope they don’t follow it too closely because like you said, there are other shows for that.

On second thought, perhaps the DVD was for good measure (as a few people have pointed out), but I feel like you never know with Lauren.
I hope you are right. Glad you enjoy my recaps/reviews! I find straight recaps a bit annoying — this one was hard because it was full of so much stuff, but I try to do a good mix of opinion and story recap.

I loved that song used when Sasha pulls up on his bike and hosts the press conference…it’s “I’m Alive” by Radio Freq and I thought it was really great. Anyone else agree? I put a video clip up at http://vimeo.com/23508071
Anyway, really good episode, they seem to be getting better every episode now in the second season. My only hope is that they don’t make the Emily being pregnant storyline get too cliche and silly, but for now I’m loving Make It Or Break it.
