REVIEW: Make It Or Break It “The Buddy System”

MAKE IT OR BREAK IT (ABC Family) - The Buddy System

Last night’s episode of Make It Or Break It featured some ridiculous (and amusing) routines and a real wakeup call for Kaylie, which I know I saw coming. Emily also goes through some pretty heavy stuff, and confronts her mom about her job. I really enjoyed this episode, but I have to say, I am more excited to see the aftermath.

The episode starts with Darby trying to lead the girls in a positive reinforcement exercise. Everyone is bitchy. She tells the girls they have to each learn one of the other’s routines. Payson and Lauren are paired up and Darby and Emily are paired up. This whole thing reminds me of watching college gymnastics routines. When one girl is performing on the floor, you can see all of the others doing their dance moves along with them. I actually really like this. It shows such a sense of team spirit and camaraderie. Of course, The Rock girls are none too pleased about the exercise.

Meanwhile, Kaylie is a group meeting for eating disorder support. Kaylie’s rolling her eyes and still unable to accept she has a problem. Kaylie’s friend Maeve from rehab comes to pick her up. Later, Maeve and Kaylie bond in a steam room. She wants to give Kaylie asthma meds to help her lose weight but Kaylie declines. Um, good move, Kaylie! Maeve tells Kaylie to turn her parents agains the therapist and she’ll be back at The Rock in no time. Kaylie, what happened to you?!

Back at The Rock, Lauren and Payson are both kind of after Max. Lauren calls “dibs” but Payson claims she isn’t interested. Hmmm. Darby teaches Emily her choreography, which is cheesy and ridiculous! She asks Darby if she felt like she was missing out on having a boyfriend. She’s clearly still struggling with the decision of signing that NGO contract that prohibits boyfriends/any sort of life. Lauren is teaching Payson her beam routine which is super flirty and quite over-the-top. As Lauren gets her flirt on, Austin and Max talk about the girls. They compare Lauren to a show girl. Ha! Max offers to help Payson learn Lauren’s beam routine and impress Max/channel her inner sexy-ness. I must say that I like Austin and Max much better than I ever liked Carter.

Back in eating-disorder-land, Kaylie tries to turn her parents against the therapist and it kind of works. Her dad gets upset about the therapist’s implications regarding their parenting skills and pressure they put on Kaylie. He storms out of the session, and Kaylie seems to think that her mission was accomplished.

And in crazy-land, Steve Tanner is burning the Payson/Sasha video onto a DVD from Lauren’s computer. He confronts her about the it and Lauren doesn’t react so well. She calls him out about Emily’s money, her mom, etc. I have to say, they have both done some pretty messed up things. I guess the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

In rather-non-crazy-town, Payson is trying to learn Lauren’s sexy moves and has a rather awkward conversation with her mom. Payson decides to take Austin up on his offer. At the gym, he puts on music to help her but her rendition is funny and he can’t help but to laugh. Then, Austin breaks out some essential oils up in this joint and tries to get one that Payson likes. They get down on all fours like cats. Payson storms out. Haha! This whole scene was rather amazing. Thinking about Austin talking about finding your chakra makes me laugh. I wonder if there is something between them or if she’s only really into Max.

At the Cruz household, Maeve comes over to family dinner with Kaylie and her parents. She joins in on the therapist bashing. Her dad doesn’t think she should be held back from training anymore. Win for Kaylie? At Tanner family dinner, Summer tells Steve he has to have the courage to do the right thing when he almost comes clean about the Payson/Sasha DVD. Oh Summer. Quite a difference between the two households.

At the gym, it’s time for the girls to perform each other’s routine. Lauren does Payson’s routine on bars and nails it. As Payson and Austin are talking about Kaylie, she walks in the gym with Maeve. Austin doesn’t think Kaylie is ready to go back to training. Kaylie is bitchy to him. Aww he’s just trying to help. I have a feeling we won’t be seeing much more of Maeve.

At the Kmetko household, Emily goes through her mom’s purse and figures out where she actually works. This will not end well! When she’s at the gym, Emily calls her mom at her “place of work” to find out what kind of establishment she works at. Emily then storms out of the gym unexpectedly. Chloe is very defensive when Emily confronts her. Chloe has a point — she does what she has to in order to support her daughter. But, you would think that she could find a better, more appropriate job and not lie to Emily about it.

Back at the gym, Payson comes out in a sexy leotard and makeup and Lauren’s crazy hair do. She nails the “sexy” routine pretty well. Max was totally turned on by Payson’s sexy routine. Aw! Then, Steve comes to The Rock with the DVD and Lauren tries to stop him from giving it to Summer. Lauren completely manipulates her dad. She says she has changed, she knows what she did wrong, and she won’t do it again. I don’t believe your crocodile tears Lauren. I want to but I don’t think I do. I hope this means Lauren will change but we haven’t seen a serious change from her yet, so I kind of think she’s just doing this to get her way. I hope that she proves me wrong.

Later that night, Emily and Payson talk about Emily’s mom and her dream. Payson gives her such a nice pep talk about everyone knowing pain and having to sacrifice so much. Aw! Payson tells Emily that she has to accept that certain things are beyond her control. Emily tells Payson she had sex with Damon and she’s in love with him. She says she wants to go to the Olympics more than Damon. I just kind of have a feeling she doesn’t mean it. But I really did feel for Emily.

Back at the Cruz house, Kaylie yells at her parents about how she doesn’t have a problem and storms out. Oh boy. Kaylie then calls Maeve to try and get support but she finds out that Maeve passed away. Aww poor Kaylie! There’s her wake-up call in the form of a corpse. I hope this shocks Kaylie back into reality and she truly begins to heal. I still think she will be at Worlds (Josie kind of implied this when we chatted), it’s just going to take a while for her to get back into shape. I am really glad that this storyline was not taken lightly and Kaylie was able to see the real effects of what an eating disorder can do to a person. The preview for the next episode implies that Kaylie might have a thing with Damon (which one of my reader’s predicted!). I’m curious to see where that goes.

As I said before, I am very interested to see the aftermath of this episode. I think it set things up really well for Emily to possibly go in a different direction, for Kaylie to finally recover, and for Lauren to prove herself to her father. Personally, I hope Payson starts to see that she can enjoy life a little, even if she doesn’t completely let go and start dating. And seriously, I’m getting tired of Darby. I want Sasha back! Again, something I’m reasonably sure of, but it will take time. I like that the season is ramping up to Worlds and I am excited to see what’s next!

Make It Or Break It airs Monday nights at 9 pm on ABC Family.

Oh MIOBI, why are you so addictively good?! I think you did a great job of summarizing the episode while adding in your own opinions. A few thoughts of my own:
    1) Loved Payson’s storyline this episode, especially the whole “learning to be sexy” scene with Austin. So funny!
    2) I agree that Austin/Max are sooooo much better than Carter! I mean, Carter at the Rock was bad enough, but the smug Denver Carter from last week’s ep? Horrible!
    3) I wish the previews for this season hadn’t shown the scene with kaylie crying about someone’s funeral. It made for an intense preview, but I knew from the first time we met Maeve that she probably wasn’t gonna last long. Kind of ruined the impact her death could’ve had.
    4) I’m wondering if we’ll see any fall-out from emily having sex with damon. Chelsea Hobbs is pregnant in real-life but i’m not sure how/if it’ll affect the show.
    5) While I wanted to shake Lauren’s dad for not turning in that video, I think it’s fitting that he didn’t. Yes, he’s trying to change how he deals with Lauren, but it’s a slow process, and for him to have done the right thing would’ve been too much character growth too fast in my opinion.
    6) Overall an enjoyable episode, but I agree with you that the aftermath of everything that happened will be even better!

Thanks for adding your thoughts! I’m so glad you agree with my assessment of Carter. He was always so weird. And I agree about the preview. Sadly, that’s the promo department’s fault (not anyone actively involved in the show), but I wish I didn’t know about Maeve dying before it happened.

Re: Your #4. I am curious too. I kind of think it’s possible Emily might choose Damon or something because she’s pregnant in real life. At least it would come from an organic place. And like you, I’m excited for next week!
