REVIEW: Make It Or Break It “What Lies Beneath/Worlds Apart”
May 24th, 2011 by thetvchick
Last night’s big two hour season finale of Make It Or Break It “What Lies Beneath/Worlds Apart” was pretty wonderful. The whole season has been leading up to the World Championships and this episode was definitely not a let down. It featured some major breakthroughs for the girls of The Rock, Summer and even KP. I knew she had it in her to be good. There’s also a major twist that I did not see coming.
The two hour episode focused on the preparation for Worlds and then the competition. It begins with KP’s mom, who tries to tell the NGO guy that Kaylie has an eating disorder. KP thinks about giving her mom Payson’s journal but decides against it. Kaylie is offered a nutrition bar sponsorship, but the whole campaign is based on healthy eating. She’s reluctant to take it.
We also find out that Payson’s parents can’t go to Worlds because they are in massive debt. But, it’s Kaylie to the rescue. She talks with Austin about the endorsement, and he tells her to be true to herself. She wants the health bar to sponsor Payson. Later, Max and Kaylie present Payson to the Healthy Grrrl Bar people who agree to sponsor her, but for less money than Kaylie was offered. Payson tries to convince her parents, and says she won’t go to Worlds if they won’t let her take the sponsorship.
Meanwhile, Summer and Sasha finally confront the whole relationship thing. She ran away from him because he doesn’t share her values. Sasha tells her she’s where she feels safe. They are about to kiss but she pushes him away. Come on, Summer, you know you don’t like Steve and his manipulative, awful daughter.
And in crazy-ville, KP’s mom tells her she ruined her marriage. Whew boy. Wow. She gives her mom the journal. UGH. She tells KP to take it to the party and bring it to Ellen Beals. Do the right thing here, KP. At the party, Lauren brings Max to her meditation room to um, have sex with him but he doesn’t go through with it.
At the big Worlds send-off party, Kaylie and Austin are dancing and he admits he wants to kiss her. She says she wants to kiss him too. Oooh romance. And in more romance, Payson tells Max she loves him. Awwww. She asks if he can kiss her but he doesn’t. Of course, she’s all heartbroken. But in good news, Payson’s parents are going to let her take the Healthy Bar deal.
Later, KP gives Kaylie back her journal. She wants to be trusted, but Kaylie says she’ll never trust her and everyone was right about her. Aww, but there’s so much more you don’t know Kaylie. And Max is getting drunk (um bad idea) when Austin comes in. Max says he couldn’t accept either girls’ affection. He kisses Austin. WHOA. He’s bisexual apparently?? Didn’t see that one coming! Max is getting all intense and Austin tells him if he cares about Payson, he should tell her.
So of course, it can’t be a Rock party if stuff doesn’t go horribly awry. Beals tells Summer to ask her fiancee about the DVD.
Summer confronts Steve when Lauren walks in and admits she sent in the DVD. Summer doesn’t want to have anything to do with either of them ever again. Oh Lauren, you deserve this, despite your tears. Also, it’s about time Summer get with the program. Even if Summer doesn’t end up choosing Sasha (which I hope she does), Steve was most certainly not right for her. Anyway, Max walks in on Lauren crying and she asks to get out of there with him. Lauren and Max get in a car accident. She’s fine but Max is injured and can’t go to Worlds. Summer showed up because Lauren told them she was her mom. Sasha comes and lays the smackdown about her behavior (but not the DVD, he doesn’t know yet). KP shows up to check on Lauren but Kaylie still won’t budge on the friendship thing. Lauren visits Max who’s sedated and asking for Payson. NGO guy shows up and says that if Kaylie admitted her eating disorder to the foreign press, her whole team would be affected judging-wise.
In Rio, Kaylie catches Austin kissing some other girls during an endorsement. Oh man. She calls him out on it and he calls her out on lying about her anorexia. Then, it’s Worlds Time!!! Bart Conner and Nadia Comenici guest star as commentators (awesome!). Sasha gives Lauren a pre-beam pep talk. Is it weird that I’m nervous for them?? She doesn’t do so great. After the first round, USA is 3rd. After some more stumbles, they drop to 4th place. Oh man. They have to finish top 4 to advance to the finals. Payson competes on floor and stumbles. Kim blames herself and Mark. Sasha lectures the team to root for KP and they do and I get slightly teary eyed. She nails her bar routine!! Her performance moves them up to 4th.
After the first day of competition, Sasha makes them all figure out why they didn’t work as a team. They fight it out. KP admits she wanted their team spirit until now. They are all tearing each other apart. Payson’s upset about talking her parents into sponsorship. KP comes clean about her parents. Payson tells Lauren to trust Sasha. She apologizes for Max, Lauren admits he likes Payson. Kaylie’s upset that she can’t talk about her disease. Aww sappy team spirit. The next day, Kaylie comes clean to the press about her eating disorder with her teammates backing her up.
On the second day of competition, Lauren admits to Sasha that she sent the video. He doesn’t seem to forgive her but then comes back and tells her that he wants to forget the past and to do her beam routine her way. Of course, she nails it. However, right after, Payson injures her foot on vault. No! She insists on doing vault because she won’t be able to compete on floor and she has to medal to get the endorsement money. Aw Payson way to stick it out! TEARS! She lands on one leg ala Kerri Strug! The U.S. team moves into 2nd place. In the final rotation, Sasha wants KP to compete on floor. She tells him to put Kaylie in. Aww. You got this Kaylie!! Yayy! USA wins gold!! Oh here come the misty eyes from me! After Worlds, Max admits he loves Payson and wants to confess the whole bisexual thing but she stops him. Austin admits to the press he has a girlfriend and he and Kaylie kiss.
And the very end scene is The Rock girls going back into the arena staring at the scoreboard. Love love love. First of all, I love that the USA win was earned. I had a feeling they’d win gold, but they came from behind and made it happen. I love that Kelly Parker has become this wonderful character, which I never would have expected. I think Nicole Anderson brings a lot of heart to her, and I am excited to see more next season. Perhaps she will join The Rock next season? I’d love to see that. I like that Sasha thinks Lauren is capable of being a better person. I’m not quite there with her just yet but maybe season three will be a turning point. I enjoyed that two relationships were set up for the upcoming season. Kaylie is getting stronger and I like her and Austin together. He’s very supportive. I also enjoy Payson and Max together and I hope his bisexuality is addressed next season. It seems like it will be. So, ABC Family, it’s your move. Please announce a season three! These Rock girls really need to make it to the Olympics! I refuse to believe there won’t be another season, and this finale set things up so perfectly for season three.
