REVIEW: Pretty Little Liars “CTRL: A”
February 14th, 2012 by Lindsey Charles
Last night’s Pretty Little Liars, “CTRL: A” got us closer to finding out who A is. It also gave us some fun confrontations, some good old fashioned make out sessions and we finally find out what the deal with Holden is. A also almost makes big trouble for Aria and Ezra, and I am so glad that his/her plan was faltered. Also, it seems that one of our liars is actually one step ahead of A (or at least the cops) and it made for some very good drama.
At the beginning of the episode, Garrett takes Caleb’s computer, which was apparently a court order. But let us not forget that A had his laptop before and most likely messed with it. Caleb is quick not to give any of his passwords to the police though, which may get him into trouble later. The girls then get an A text saying now it’s Caleb’s turn. Ah! Leave Caleb alone, he’s awesome!
And in fake dating world, Holden tells Aria he does martial arts and those were pain meds that fell out of his bag. He has a big tournament coming up and he doesn’t want their “arrangement” to stop. Hmmm. I’m not sure if I think they will eventually fall for each other. Obviously, my Ezra loving heart does not want that to happen, but it seems like they might be leading up to Holden liking Aria. I’m curious to see where it goes.
Later, Spencer runs into Jason in town. Jason found letters to his mom from Spencer’s dad in a box that Ali hid. A couple of them were love letters. There was also a lot of cash. This leads them both to believe that Ali blackmailed Spencer’s dad. The plot thickens! Then the girls go to meet up with that guy who knew Vivian/Ali. Well, the girls back up Aria. The guy says he worked at a cell company and Vivian owes her a job and money. Vivian said her friend Alison got texts from someone. He says Vivian owes him two grand. He shadily gives Aria a number to reach him at. We all know the two grand is coming from that money Jason found, right? Before Spencer even has to say it? Yeah, okay, good.
Later, Aria and Ez planning a cute date. But of course, A leaves a note on Byron’s car about where Aria and Ez will be. This A is really pulling some illegal moves here, huh? Ugh. And it turns out there is a new photo that might shed light on the missing page from Ali’s autopsy. Garrett seems rather pissed off about it. Apparently, the is photo of the girls outside the morgue, when they tried to find the autopsy and discovered the page is missing. Han gets called down to the police station for this but tells her mom she didn’t do it. Which technically she didn’t, but she was at the morgue with the girls.
Meanwhile, Maya’s parents found an old joint in her room and want to ship her off again. Emily is super sad and wants to find a way to talk her parents out of it. Oh, Emily. Maya isn’t the best for you.
Then there’s a party for the Sharks at Han’s house. Wilden is back and thinks the girls have something to do with Ali’s murder. Spencer decides to go home to get money? She finds her dad’s checkbook. Oh boy. She hears noises though and aborts the plan. She confronts her dad, who says he never gave money to anyone in that family for any reason. But Jason doesn’t believe Spence that her dad didn’t give money to Ali.
Back at the party, Em finds Maya about to smoke a joint outside. Oh man. Meanwhile, Caleb is at the police station. Earlier, he told Han his password which was a big combination of letters and numbers and punctuation. She asks him what 1105! means but he doesn’t tell her. Then Caleb calls Han from the police station he gives her a clue about how he’s about to get onto a wifi hot spot and he needs her help to hack into the computer. Spencer and Han keep trying to put together the password but Han can’t remember the last part until Spencer suggests maybe it’s an anniversary. They are able to hack in and find the file and Spencer keeps yelling at Han “Control A!” to select all and she finally gets it just as the police are opening up the planted files. So all the fake incriminating evidence disappears. Go Han!
And back to fake dating-ville, Aria confronts Holden because her mom told her that Holden has a heart condition. He has some sort of aneuryism that could rupture no matter what he’s doing. It is risky to do martial arts (that part wasn’t a lie) but he doesn’t want to sit around and watch TV all day. Aria cancels her date with Ez (aww!) but it’s a good thing because Ez is about to get to the restaurant and sees Byron there and ducks away. Close call!
Later that night, Han meets Caleb at the police station. 1105 was the anniversary of them doing it (haha! and aw!) they make out to rub it in Garrett’s face. Woo! Jason apologizes to Spencer. Spencer tells Jason about the texts Ali got and how they need to find out where those texts came from. Spencer needs Jason to trust her (in the amount of two grand). I for one, am really hoping the shady guy who met up with Aria actually knows something and doesn’t just want money but who knows. At the end of the episode, Em leaves a message for Maya to call. She left in a huff to go to San Francisco? Outside A is watching her. Creepy!
Overall, I really enjoyed this episode. I liked that it was a Hanna/Caleb centered hour, because I love the two of them together. I also like that there’s more to Jason and Holden than we originally knew. I am curious to see how the Hastings family will put back the pieces of their family after this big bomb shell. And is the whole Holden heart condition thing leading up to him dying? Or A messing with him? Or something tragic? I kind of like them, and Aria needs more friends but I defintiely don’t want him and Aria to get together. Will A still keep trying to mess with Aria and Ezra? Only a month or so until A is revealed, and I am so excited! But with all things in Rosewood, problems just don’t go away. Once A is revealed, will everything just get better for the girls? I really don’t think so. I can’t wait to see what happens leading up to “A” day.
Pretty Little Liars airs Monday nights at 8 PM on ABC Family.
