REVIEW: Pretty Little Liars “Save The Date”
August 3rd, 2011 by thetvchick
Last night’s episode of Pretty Little Liars “Save the Date” was quite intense. The girls took a trip to the morgue to try and figure out Ali’s death, Em has quite a physical/health set back and we learn more about shady Garrett and creepy Jenna and what they might be hiding. And I forgot to mention that “Ezria” fans like me were a tad disappointed by this episode, and especially by the preview for the next episode, but I have faith that they will be together in the end. This episode felt to me like people were trying to get closure — Hanna’s parents for sure (more on that later) and the girls about Ali’s death. But one thing is for sure, this season is certainly ramping up to something big.
The episode starts with the girls talking outside Em’s house (because she had to go to her old house to fix the alarm) and they see Garrett’s car. He’s going into Jenna’s house. The girls get out to follow — love Han’s eye roll here. Jenna opens the window shade dressed all scantily as her and Garrett make out. The girls are shocked. As the audience, we obviously knew this episodes ago but it was still a nice reveal.
The next morning, Em working out like crazy to prepare for her big meet with the Danby scout. But she’s clearly in a lot of pain. Something (ahem the previews) tell me she’s going to end up in the hospital. At the Marin house, Hanna’s parents come downstairs, and Hanna opens a save the date card for her dad and his fiancee. AWKWARD. And speaking of awkward, at the Hastings’ house, Wren shows up out of the blue, with flowers. He’s back in Rosewood for a rotation at the community hospital. Spencer asks him about autopsies so she can try and figure out the field hockey stick situation. Wren is all flirty and Spencer tells him she has a boyfriend. Will Wren tempt Spencer? Does he have some sort of ulterior motive for being there? I don’t entirely trust him. Maybe it’s the accent…
Before school, Han sees Caleb doing some more shady phone business. There’s a cop watching on. Uh oh! Caleb is all rude to her, and the car with whoever was watching pulls away. At school, Garrett is there to teach Driver’s Ed. HE IS SO SHADY!! He tries to talk to Spencer about all of her questions regarding Ali’s death, but Spencer runs off.
At Hollis, Ezra visits Aria in pottery class. And he makes a HOT GHOST REFERENCE! Love. Aria comes clean about Mike breaking into Jason’s house. Ezra asks about Jenna and Aria’s relationship, which obviously is going nowhere because she’s so creepy. He’s a little hurt because Aria didn’t tell him about Mike. He asks her to stop by his place later. Hotnesss. He asks if he should be worried about her and Jason. Aw, Ez! Yes, be worried!!
Back at school, Emily’s dad shows up as a surprise. Aw. Her dad wants to meet the scout from Danby — oh man, this can’t end well. Em is then struck with horrible pain and collapses. Poor Emily! (Side note, I hard this exact phrase was trending on Twitter) The diagnosis is that she has an ulcer. She can’t swim for a while. Seriously, poor Em! The web of lies that A has weaved for her — I don’t much like this pesky A. Also, I’d like to point out what a stellar season Shay Mitchell is having. She has really had some fantastic performances — between all the college stuff and all the pressure and possible new girlfriend Samara. In fact, due in big part to the show, ABC Family just became the second network in GLAAD history to snag an “excellent” rating. So happy for the show and Shay! But I digress.
Back at the Marin house, Ashley tells Tom (Han’s dad) to go home. I have a feeling this will lead to some major rejection issues with Hanna, but I don’t blame the girl. Meanwhile, Han and Spencer go to talk to Em at the hospital, who doesn’t want to keep lying to her dad. Spencer slyly spots the name for the pathologist, but when she tries to go to the morgue, Wren foils her plan.
And in some shady car somewhere shady, Garrett and Jenna talk. Jenna asks him, “What makes you think they know?” Jenna then tells Garrett they need to take care of this. Oooh and she asks if they know about Jason! What about Jason? Was Jason involved? Is he really Ali’s killer? (I doubt it). How is Garrett involved? If he is like Wilden in the books, he has some big role in this. And what is Jenna up to? Besides macking on Garrett of course. I am super intrigued.
That night, Wren visits Emily in the hospital. Apparently, HGH showed up in her bloodstream. Oh no Em!! I don’t believe she would have taken steroids. I kind of think this is something A is pulling, but who knows? The next day a the hospital, Spencer gets Aria to dress as a candy-striper. I liked this call back to when Ali was a candy-striper in Hanna’s dream/nightmare.
At the Montgomery house, Ella confronts Mike. He gets all upset and storms out but not before asking if he should hurry up before she moves out. Oh Mike. Someone needs to give you some real tough love. Meanwhile, Han takes Caleb to some sort of cabin of Spencer’s. She tells him about the cop following him. He tells her he’s not going anywhere. Love this sweet scene followed by some sweet making out.
Back at the hospital, a doctor comes to check on Em and somehow in her food tray is a note from A and pain cream. Ahh! Spencer and Aria visit Em the next morning, who is ready to come clean about the scholarship and just move to Texas with her parents. Spencer doesn’t want to let A get to all of them. She kind of already has, Spencer, but whatever. And a little later, in a total moment of sweetness, Em’s dad tells her to hell with the scholarship. She should swim because she loves it. So, she never had to confess.
Then, Spencer and Aria go to the morgue. CREEPY! They find Ali’s death report. They read the report and apparently, Ali was most likely hit by a curved blunt object (like a field hockey stick) and that she was buried alive. Whoa! Jason is now their suspect #1. I agree he has to be involved with something bad but the girls’ suspects never work out. I mentioned a couple episodes ago how I saw shades of Veronica Mars in the show, and this whole morgue scene reminded me of it again. The girls are trying to solve a murder, that supposedly has already been solved. I love it. Spencer and Aria then show the report to Em. But apparently page five is missing from the report. Then, Aria goes to meet Ezra and Jason calls. She doesn’t want to go over to his place, and Ezra leaves, disappointed. And all the fans of “Ezria’s” hearts melted. Haha, just a little.
Later, Han and Ashley talk about the whole situation with her dad. Ashley claims they were both living a fantasy and he had to go. Han’s upset. Understandably so. Poor girl. After the upsetting conversation, Han confronts the undercover cop. And then there was a twist I wasn’t expecting. The “undercover cop” might be Caleb’s dad or affiliated to someone who knows Caleb, because he makes a phone call saying that Caleb doesn’t want to see him. Hmmm.
The episode ends with someone hiding in the morgue, under the sheets, who clearly saw everything. Or heard everything. And in the previews for next week’s episode, Jason and Aria kiss. Oh boy! The most intriguing part of this episode was the scene with Jenna and Garrett. I suspect they know Ian didn’t do kill Alison but what their involvement is beyond that, I am not so sure. I have a feeling it was A under that morgue blanket so I have a feeling she may be in full harassment mode in the next episode. Also, whatever happened to Noel Kahn and Mona? I assume we’ll see more of them. And Melissa sort of just left town after the whole Ian incident. I can’t say I blame her but I sort of hope she returns to have the baby, or at least that we see more of her and how she’s dealing with life. I think some crazy drama is about to unfold and I can’t wait.
Pretty Little Liars airs Monday nights at 8 PM on ABC Family.
