PRETTY-LITTLE-LIARS-The-Devil-You-Know-Season-2-Episode-5

Last night’s episode of Pretty Little Liars, cleverly titled “The Devil You Know,” focused a lot on A. After this episode, there are many more questions than answers, and some people emerged as a bit shady and mysterious. Aria seems to have a slightly wandering eye, her brother is into some bad stuff (not drugs though, as I suspected) and Spencer’s mom FINALLY realizes what a total awful parent she’s been all this time. It was an intense episode. I really enjoyed the way the last scene played out (and how creepy it was!) and it was another episode that was beautifully shot with a scene reminiscent of the opening credits. And one of my favorite couples reunited!

The episode starts with the girls analyzing Ian’s “suicide note.” Garrett tells the girls that Ian had been dead for a week! Say what?? A texts Emily asking if the suicide note looks familiar. This later leads to a Veronica Mars-esque investigation to figure out the meaning of A’s text. Yeah, I went there. I compared Pretty Little Liars to Veronica Mars. I think they share a lot of similarities with their dark undertones. But I digress.

At the Hastings home, things are obviously very stressful. Ian’s only relative doesn’t want to give him a funeral. Spencer comes to Melissa’s defense, saying that Ian should get a funeral and Melissa needs this. I would like to point out that Melissa does not deserve Spencer’s sympathy in any way. At the Marin household, Caleb comes by to check on Han. Ashley comes home and freaks out because she couldn’t reach Hanna and she still gets worried because of Ali’s death. Aw, emotional moment!

Meanwhile, Aria talks to Ezra about the Ian situation. Jackie eavesdrops and interrupts and calls Ezra “Z.” Awkward moment alert! They discuss when to make their relationship public and decide to start as “friends” to everyone else. Back in mystery solving world, Emily shows up to pick up a package and the guy that works there was the same guy (Logan Reed) who took part in the sting with Ian and Garrett and the money. Crazy!

Back at the Hastings household, Spencer and her mom have the moment I’ve been waiting for since the beginning of the season. Her mom wants to take care of her and tells Spencer that it’s not okay that she didn’t believe her. I hope there is more of this, but I’m glad Spencer’s mom admitted she has been a bad parent. Spencer feels bad about the whole engagement ring/pawn shop thing, so she looks online for a replacement. Of course, she gets a cryptic message from A telling her to come clean. She tries to tell Melissa but then her mom interrupts. At the Montgomery household, Jason shows up with Mike, who tried to break into his house. Mike, what is your deal? I know you are all torn up about your parents, but they are back together now, so don’t be ridiculous! Aria finds out that Mike was the one breaking into everyone’s garages and the one who pushed her down as he ran out of Spencer’s house. Way to go, Mike!

Later, Emily continues to channel her inner Veronica Mars (2nd reference, deal with it!) and shows up to talk to Logan. Apparently, a woman hired him and she paid through a P.O. box. Hmm, shady town! Then, it’s funeral time. Emily tries to give Spencer info on the whole suicide note but Spencer wants all of them to stop the obsession. There’s nothing the girls can do will bring Ali back. Spencer has a good point here, but doesn’t she want to get to the bottom of things? And then Ezra shows up for Aria. Awww! Sadly, he still refers to Aria and her friends as “former students.” Boo! Em pulls aside Garrett and tells him about Logan. He says he’ll figure it out but I don’t trust him. Then there’s the burial and the girls throw dirt into the grave. I absolutely loved how symbolic this part was. It reminded me of the eerie opening credits and how death is such an undertone for the whole show. Love love love.

After the funeral, Ezra talks to Aria and tells her that he didn’t think it was the right moment for the next step in their relationship. She needed a hug from him but he won’t give her one in public. Sadness. Make up, guys! Come on! At school, Han confronts Janet, Caleb’s foster mom. She threatens him with a hilarious fake law office name and insists she give Caleb the money that he’s owed. Previously, she had been collecting money and Caleb hadn’t even been living in her house. Go Han!

Aria goes to talk to Jason at the graveyard, and Jason tells her he’s relieved it was Ian who killed Alison. He doesn’t remember anything from the night she died and he thought he might have killed her. He woke up that next morning with a note in his pocket that said “I know what you did.” Crazyness! Did Jason kill his own sister?

Later that night, Spencer and Melissa have a sisterly talk. They both are about to confess to something big when Ian’s phone rings from Spencer’s bag. Seriously, A? Melissa gets the wrong idea and completely flips out! Melissa, I knew you weren’t being totally sincere! Then we see Garrett paying off Logan, and calling up Jenna to say he did it. Wow. Caleb shows up to see Hanna and brings her food. He caught on that Hanna threatened Janet and he’s grateful. Then, they kiss! Well, make out! And it was awesome! I’m so glad they are back together. But not all is great with the girls. Remember Em’s package from before? It’s a map of the graveyard that takes them to Ali’s grave, late at night may I add. When they get there, the video with Ian and Ali is projected onto the side of a building. But the video goes on longer than before, and we see that Ali is alive after she’s knocked to the ground. Holy crap!

So there’s much more to Ali’s murder/disappearance than we know. I’m sure there’s a lot more to Jason DiLaurentis than his good looks and great abs. I hope Aria doesn’t get too into him because we all know how much I love her and Ezra together. And something is going on with Garrett. He is so shady. As for Melissa’s outburst, it was kind of uncalled for. I expect Spencer and Melissa’s mom to rally behind Melissa again, but I hope this doesn’t happen. And what will happen with the ring? And Melissa’s baby? So many questions. And when will A finally show their face? I am excited to see how the season continues to play out.

Pretty Little Liars airs Tuesday nights at 8 PM on ABC Family.

Not my favorite episode, but not the worst. Anyway, some thoughts:
    1) We’ve seen alot of Garrett lately, but whatever happened to Wilden?
2)I definitely did not recognize the guy Emily was talking to at the post office. He didn’t even look vaguely familiar, so I’m glad they explicitly said who he was & didn’t just assume we’d remember.
    3) When did Maya move out of Allison’s old house? I know this comment is a little late, seeing as Jason moved in before this episode, but I just don’t remember any mention of Maya leaving. Did she leave town for good?
    4) I thought the part with Hanna’s mom talking about her father’s funeral was a bit random.
    5) I liked the subtlety of A telling Spencer that she had to tell or she’d get that “ring” when she least expected it. I assumed A meant the actual ring, but it seems maybe she was talking about the “ring” of Ian’s cellphone. Maybe I’m reading too deep into that, but if not, then I thought that was rather clever of the writers.

  • I easily gave up on Pretty Little Liars after the second episode, but your Veronica Mars comparisons almost have me tempted to give it another try. I’d love to find another Veronica Mars-esque show to fill its void.
