REVIEW: Pretty Little Liars “Touched By An ‘A’-ngel”
August 17th, 2011 by thetvchick
Last night’s episode of Pretty Little Liars focused a lot on Alison but without any flashbacks. We learn that she hid a lot, we learn that Jason probably has more to hide, and that her murder was not a cut and dry case. We already knew that last part but it turns out Jason, Garrett and Ian were in some sort of crazy club in high school. What I really enjoyed in this episode was how strong the girls’ bond has become and a few key confrontations and decisions that were made. Now if only that A would make him or herself known.
The episode begins with Em telling Aria about Jason and it freaks her out. Understandably so. Then Em finds a creepy A note in her milk that reads, “The weakest link is easiest to break. Snapping yet?” Ah! Of course, Aria runs into Jason at school and she confronts him about the pictures of her. Apparently, Ali took the photos. He found a roll of film in her room. He was going to frame the pictures for Aria. Still creepy, Jason. STILL creepy! Creepy Jenna watches in the shadows. Meanwhile, Em sees the swim team together and gets all sad. Her locker explodes open and the therapist helps her pick everything up. She admits that there are things she hasn’t told the therapist yet and she needs to. Oh boy. This goes nowhere though as Em later decides against talking to the therapist.
Later, Spencer and Toby are packing up Ian’s things and find his old yearbook. Under his picture, it lists the N.A.T. club — they don’t know what it is. It’s not listed in the index. Garrett Reynolds also in the club as is Jason DiLaurentis. Spencer obviously tries to get to the bottom of the NAT club and finds a tee shirt with a latin saying on it. The saying means “We see all.” She theorizes that maybe Jason killed Ali to get back those tapes. Oh Spencer.
At the college fair, Ezra is there and he and Aria share glances. But Jackie is also there and Aria is clearly jealous. They talk about not being able to go public and Aria admits to kissing Jason. GASP. No, I literally gasped. Jackie makes some smart ass comment about Aria being naive. Go away, Jackie.
While most Rosewood students are at the optional college fair, Hanna is at a dress fitting for her dad’s fiancĂ©e’s wedding with Mona. Kate shows up (remember the perfect daughter?) — but wait is this a new Kate? She doesn’t look familiar. She invites them for lunch. Mona happily obliges to get in with Kate’s crowd.
Em goes to the spa to get a massage (complimentary of Ashley Marin) and she’s all nervous. She starts to enjoy it and then the actual masseuse walks in. A is written on a glass in the condensation. Well, now I feel like A must be working with several people. Because if it is who I think it is, this person can’t be two places at once. But I digress. More on A later.
Meanwhile, Jason sits down with Aria. He gives her the framed photos that Ali supposedly took. Apparently, Jason found a box of Ali’s stuff in the floor board. He says nothing special was in it but Aria is welcome to look at it. Seriously, I still don’t trust you, Jason. Spencer and Toby see Aria and Jason together and Spencer decides to take matters into her own hands. She goes to talk to Ezra…crazyness! She says she knows about Aria and Ezra dating and thinks Aria is in danger. Whoa! I’m proud of Spencer but I also think that this will lead to more people knowing. But way to step it up, Spence! Aria goes back to Jason’s house, presumably to look at the box.
And in step sister hell, Han and Mona talk while they look for their lost horses and hike through the woods trying to find Kate and her friends. Mona is bitchtastic as usual. And Hanna gets all upset and rants about Kate. Of course, this was heard by all on the PA system. Oh boy. Kate storms off.
At the Hastings house, Spencer comes down the stairs to see creepy Jenna. She warns Spencer about digging to deep for answers to Ali’s death. Boo Jenna! Spencer tells her to tell Garrett she says hi. Whew boy. I absolutely adored this confrontation. I love that Spencer didn’t allow herself to get bullied by creepy Jenna. And Jenna definitely knows so much more than she’s leading on.
And back at Jason’s, Ez shows up to get Aria. Awww! He says Jason’s a threat to him because he doesn’t want to lose her. He doesn’t want to keep their relationship a secret if it means they are losing each other. He wants to tell her parents. Aw love. He kisses her. Annnd Jason walks out. Awkward. He gives Aria the box. Not without a smoldery creepster look though. Oh Jason, you’re so sexy but I like Ezra better.
Meanwhile, Garrett picks up Jenna and she says it’s only a matter of time before “they” figure it out. She and Garrett need to talk to Jason. Oh man. Later, Garrett does just this in order to make sure they’re still cool. What does this all mean?
At the Marin household, Han’s dad calls and apparently he heard the quality time with Kate went well. Kate is on the phone for Hanna, though, and she promises to mess with Han’s life and take her down. Wow, nice. Just what the girls need is another person torturing them. I don’t like you, Kate.
At the Montgomery, Aria goes through Ali’s box. There’s really nothing big in the boxes but I’m thinking that something like this doesn’t get introduced for no reason. Then, Aria’s mom asks her about the rumor regarding Mr. Fitz dating a student. She suspects Ezra and Spencer. Ha! Aria poses a hypothetical question to test the waters to see if her mom is very against Ezra dating a student. Ella answers that she’d be disappointed he abused his power. Oh man. She’d feel betrayed if he was involved with a student. Sooo, not a good time to tell the parents? At the end of the episode, the girls theorize. Spencer wonders if A is a group of people. Aria shows up and she’s not mad at Spencer for talking to Ezra. Aww. I love their friendship. The very last scene is A seeing the therapist, Dr. Sullivan.
This episode definitely left me with more questions than answers. Jenna, Garrett, Ian and Jason are involved in some sort of weird club that knows something about Ali’s death. The therapist came back into the picture and that’s obviously for a reason, as did Jackie. Also, that box definitely has something significant inside of it. I’d be disappointed if it didn’t. I’m also trying to decide if Jason has any sort of good intentions or if he plans to tell people that Aria and Ezra are together. This episode was directed by Chad Lowe, who plays Byron Montgomery, and I thought he did a great job. I am obviously very curious to see how Aria and Ezra’s relationship plays out in the last couple episodes of the (mid)season and of course, I hope we get more A clues soon, too.
Pretty Little Liars airs Monday nights at 8 PM on ABC Family.
