The Secret Circle is back…and actually better than ever! Maybe absence actually does make the heart grow fonder or maybe I’m just finally getting on board with the story that the Secret Circle writers are trying to tell. Either way, episode 16 was great.

Cassie/Daddy Issues
Papa Blackwell is in the house and he’s dishing out the life advice! Well, it wasn’t so much life advice as it was telling Cassie to quit magic before the darkness takes over. Seems to me that Blackwell is afraid of the power his daughter has and is trying to find a way to take her out of commission without having to literally take her out.

Let’s break it down: Blackwell tells Cassie that Ethan was actually the one who betrayed their circle and helped the witch-hunters kill them. Ethan wanted Blackwell dead because Ethan believed he was destined (or cursed?) to be with Amelia. Simple-minded Cassie believes him even though he’s basically a total stranger and ends up putting her relationship with Adam on the line when she shares her father’s theory. I’m still not convinced that Blackwell’s motives are clear when it comes to Cassie/Chance Harbor; that scene where Cassie saw Blackwell have an episode and break a table was SUSPICIOUS. Regardless of the dark magic threatening to take over Blackwell at any moment, he wasn’t wrong about Ethan. Sober Ethan is a bit of a badass and he has come out to play. Ethan shows up and stabs Blackwell outside of Casino Night, but Cassie shows up just in time to stop Ethan from finishing the murder. For the first time, we got a real look at how much power Cassie has. She took out Ethan easily, and just as she took him out the dark magic took over her. Without her father’s intervention, Cassie would have killed Ethan.

Faye/Lee/Psycho-Bitch Eva
Bye bye, Lee. You were…uh, interesting while you lasted. More interesting? Psycho bitch Eva on a revenge mission to take out Faye for stealing her boyfriend while Eva lay helpless in a coma. Bring on the cat fight. Based on how she took out Lee, Eva has some kind of powerful magic and Faye better get ready.

Diana/Hot Australian
Yes, yes, yes. A+. Exclamation point. It’s time for Diana to have some fun and random Australian from Casino Night is the perfect solution to all of her problems. I’m sure he’s evil or a witch hunter that’s going to try to kill her. but for now let’s just enjoy it while it lasts.

Melissa
Poor Jessica Parker Kennedy got her obligatory two lines in this episode and then faded back into obscurity. It’d be really great if one day the writers decide to give her a story. Any story. Except drugs, that was horrible.

Cassie/Adam
These two finally get it on. Yay? I mean, I guess in the grand scheme of things this is a win, but this whole curse/destiny would be significantly more compelling if Britt Robertson and Thomas Dekker had an ounce of chemistry between them.

Weirdest moment of the episode? The flock of crows watching Cassie and Adam do the deed. What was that about?!

Now that the dual stories between the adults and the kids are finally intertwining themselves, the show is hitting it’s stride.

The Secret Circle airs Thursday nights at 9 PM on the CW.
