REVIEW: The Secret Circle “Masked”

It’s Halloween in Chance Harbor! Time to break out your witch costumes! I love a good Halloween themed episode of TV and this week’s episode of Secret Circle didn’t disappoint!

Poor Luke
We barely knew ye. Such pretty hair, yet so little talent as a witch hunter. I love a good death scene as much as the next person, and Luke’s was pretty awesome. Who doesn’t want to set a person on fire with their brain?! Award yourself one point if you saw Luke’s reveal as a witch hunter coming. I certainly didn’t! Back in Luke’s first episode (3? 4? I don’t remember which it was…) I expected him to pop up as a recurring love interest for Cassie, but I have to say I much prefer this version of events.

Not only did we get rid of a potentially boring character tonight, we learned a lot more about Cassie. She’s got darkness inside of her. Any girl that can light a guy on fire is not someone I would want to mess with. Watch your back, Jake.

More Witches and More Witch-Hunters
It’s only episode seven and we’ve already hit the magical genre TV milestone where it seems like everyone in Chance Harbor is supernatural or involved with the supernatural.

It seems that there are other witches in town outside of the circle’s family, but not for long at the rate Jake’s going! Cassie takes her broken knife from last episode to a local magic show and reveals her true nature to the shop’s owner Mr. Wilson. Mistake. Wilson knows more than he let’s on to Cassie and his guilt over his omissions leads him to fall at the hands of Jake’s weird witch-hunter magic.

Jake may be deadly with his magic, but Cassie’s got the deathly touch; everyone she meets dies sortly after. Heather, Nick, Wilson…if I were a guest star I’d pray to the television gods that I don’t have scenes with Britt Robertson because my character probably wouldn’t survive the episode.

Anyone want to place bets on how long until the circle figures out that Jake isn’t one of them? At the rate these episodes have been moving, I’m giving him more episodes of secrecy.

Adam and Diana
After all the talk of destiny and fated love last week, Adam has decided to take things into his own hands. He wants Diana, and his father come between their relationship. Here’s a thought, maybe Adam should have made a little less magic with Cassie and spent a bit more time with Adam. That said, I’m on board with Diana and Adam as a couple. They’re doomed, but I like their dynamic and I’m enjoying what’s happening between Cassie and Jake right now.

Cassie’s Grandmother
Looks like Chance Harbor has got even more trouble on the horizon! We don’t know who knocked out Jane and stole the crystal, but it could be Charles…or it could be any number of people we haven’t met yet.

Faye
…can we all take a moment and think about how ridiculous Faye’s outfit was in the opening scene at the magic shop?

Charles and Dawn
Anyone else miss them this week?…Just me?

Overall, this was a solid follow-up to last week’s episode and a much better introduction to Jake. A couple of really strong twists (and really fun Halloween costumes) made this a great episode. And as always, let’s finish this up with my weekly motto: More Charles and Dawn.

The Secret Circle airs Thursday nights at 9 PM on the CW.

Totally agree about Charles and Dawn!!! The parents add a totally different level to the show, and they are SORELY missed!!!!!

  • Missed Gale Harold BIG time. Liked the episode otherwise, and I hope those were Charles Meade’s feet at the end, and that Charles is re-powered with Henry’s crystal. But I want to see Gale’s FACE on every episode. And ALL the stuff below the neck, too.

Totally missed Gale Harold this week. He is the reason I’m watching. Without him I notice that I’m watching a silly soap. And the two best episodes, in my opinion, were the two that incorporated the parents the most. Bring them back!

I liked that Adam told off his dad, and I liked the scene between Adam and Diana in her bedroom a lot.

Liked the suspense that the witches still don’t know if the new guy is trustworthy or not.
