REVIEW: The Secret Circle “Slither”

Slither

Wow, I can honestly say I didn’t see that ending coming. What a bold choice to make in the 5th episode of a first season! If this is a sign of the kind of awesome twists and edge of our seats episodes that we can expect for the rest of the season then I’m 100% on board! Before I continue, let’s all take a moment to say a thank you to the TV gods over at the CW for giving Secret Circle a full season pickup.

Fair warning, if you haven’t watched this week’s episode, “Slither”, yet, STOP READING NOW. Seriously, I warned you…

Did anyone see that death coming?! I sure didn’t I had a feeling going into tonight’s episode that we’d see a major step forward in the plot, but I had no idea that the writers would just throw us all off of a cliff. Honestly, I’m not too upset about losing Nick. He was pretty much dead weight, and what I love about this show is the writers made the choice to just lose him rather than have his “romance” with Melissa continue to ruin a perfectly pleasant viewing experience. Just because two actors are pretty, doesn’t mean that they have chemistry. Lesson learned.

Where does the Circle go from here without Nick? It seems logical that they’re no longer bound together without the 6th member, but that won’t stop the evil forces from continuing to make their presence known in Chance Harbor. How will this loss affect their powers? There are just a countless number of questions raised after this episode, and it’ll be great to see where the writers take the story.

Let’s talk briefly about the older generations. Looks like Cassie’s grandma finally has more to do than say hello in the kitchen, and it turns out that she’s good at more than just making meals. That witch has some serious power! It seemed fairly clear that the grandma knows more about her daughter’s departure from Chance Harbor. If she’s holding on to that secret, what else could she be hiding?

We’ve known for a few weeks that Dawn and Charles had some shady stuff happening, but what a shocker that Dawn summoned the demon. The pair of them are clearly in search of their powers, but how far are they willing to go? What happens when their own children are the ones affected by their schemes? Nick paid the price for their power-hungry attitude, but Charles seemed to be genuinely affected by his role the kid’s death. Gale Harold did great work at the end of this episode as Charles and Dawn sit in his car reflecting on their actions. I need more scenes with these two. Make it happen, Secret Circle writers!

Overall, this was an A+ episode of Secret Circle. Edge of my seat, total emotional investment in all stories, and unexpected mind-bending twists. Here’s to hoping we see many more episodes like this one in the future!

Totally agree: this was a great episode, and Gale Harold did an amazing job as Charles. More scenes with Charles and Dawn, please!
I was sorry to lose Nick, he was so pretty. Jessica Parker Kennedy did a great job playing both Melissa and demon, and Shelley Hennig really brought the sex appeal. Great episode all around.
    And more Gale Harold, please!

  • Loved, loved, loved this episode. So glad Britt Robertson has another lead role, and I’m also really happy with the tone they’ve given the show so far – it strikes a nice balance between light-hearted enough to have some laughs, but dark enough to stay intriguing, all the while maintaining good drama throughout.

My favorite scene of this episode was when Diane seduced Adam over dessert…really well planned and shot, and I loved that they used “Why Do I Worry” by Lay Low as the song, because it really added to the mood. FYI you can watch a clip of that scene at http://vimeo.com/30750069
