REVIEW: The Vampire Diaries “Ghost World”
October 28th, 2011 by E. Reagan
E here, back for some more The Vampire Diaries…this time with “Ghost World.” I really enjoyed this episode because I simply love when past characters are brought back (from the dead).
We begin with Damon all chained up (as he should be…I mean, what? Never mind.) And stabbed. He thinks Stefan did it, but it wasn’t Stefan. It was a ghostly Mason who we can’t see (yet). Stefan does un-stabify him though (coined that phrase, like it?). But, he leaves him in the chains. Mason then opens the shades and suns him (he’d already taken his superhero ring off).
Our weekly town event (Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec know the weekly events are hilarious, right?) is the Night of Illumination. [Ed. Note: Hilarious AND awesome!] Town historian and Mystic Falls descendant Tobias Fell is doing some talking. Jeremy is there with Alaric. And Anna is there as well…holding hands with Jer Bear. Weird. She says that Tobias is telling lies, the townsfolk stole from the vamps B in the D.
Caroline and Bonnie are having some girl talk about Bonnie’s boyfriend woes – she’s annoyed Anna is still hanging around. Damon drives by and tells them about Mason and then Bonnie looks at Matt who is also hanging around – I think because she’s concerned Vicki is still there. She asks him if Vicki is still around. Matt’s like, no way dude. She be gone.
Elena is now chilling with Alaric and Jeremy (and Anna). She wants Jeremy to contact Lexi because she was always able to bring Stefan back. He’s like, uhh, I didn’t even know her. Anna mentions that Lexi could be elsewhere because not everyone seems to be where she is. Some may have found peace. She tells Jeremy not to say anything because she knows Elena will be annoyed if she’s there because Elena is all Team Bonnie. Stefan also stops by like the Creepo Creepuiseppe he is. Anna and Jeremy also go into the bathroom at the Grill, and Jeremy just has to kiss her. This is just getting weirder. Also, Alaric and Damon are being the bickering buddies that always have been at the Grill.
Luckily, Bonnie’s grimoire falls to the ground and opens to just the page we need – a spell on ‘veiled matter.’ Let’s bring these ghosts to light! Caroline and Bonnie head to the old house (you know, where Bonnie brought Jeremy back to life). Bonnie does the spell and things start getting crazy. And suddenly Grams is there (that’s Miss Sheila to you)!
Elsewhere other ghosts appear: Lexi is with Stefan, Mason is with Damon and Alaric, and Anna is with Jeremy (well, she already was, but everyone can see her now including Elena who catches them kissing).
Lexi knocks Stefan out because he’s off the rails. And she’s going to give Elena a crash course in getting rid of that weirdo ripper persona.
Bonnie cries and Grams is all like child, there is no time for tears, you made a damn mess, and I have to help clean it up. They’ve gotta set the balance of nature right (in my mind – this should take Jeremy away – but it doesn’t – spoiler alert).
Back at The Grill, Mason simply wants an apology from Damon – he’s really there to help Tyler. No revenge seeking, pinky swear. Damon is all hemming and hawing, and Alaric is like, just apologize you freak! He gives the most craptacular apology ever, which Mason accepts because he’s awesome. Turns out, Mason knows where there is a weapon that can kill Klaus – awesome!
So, Lexi is going crazy on Stefan – she’s convinced his mind that he hasn’t had blood in years. Elena looks on, sort of scared.
Meanwhile, Mason and Damon go on a little field trip to the Lockwood cellar to find this weapon. It’s a jaunty good time full of quips.
Also, Bonnie now knows about Anna and Jeremy kissing though the grapevine – she is, as we say, ‘not pleased.’
So, back to our weekly town event, Tobias was supposed to open this thing up with some words but he’s MIA, so Alaric fills in because you know, he’s a history teacher and stuff. Then the lights go on! Spectacular. Oops, there’s Tobias – all dead and strung up. It was the work of Frederick and his cronies – he just ran into Anna (remember Frederick? – he was part of that whole thing when Pearl was around. He was dead, but you know, the spell). The intervention with Stefan is still going strong when Elena has to get out of there and she quickly learns of the town drama.
Okay, anyway, it turns out to restore things to order we need Elena’s necklace. It’s missing (Damon used to have it). There’s some speculation that Anna took it, but she’s all no I didn’t!
Back in the Lockwood cellar, Damon gets stabbed by a booby trap and Mason helps him out (then a little Randy Newman plays, j/k). Damon is surprised and Mason is like, look, I just want to help my nephew. I’m here for redemption, not revenge.
Elena tells Anna that she’s holding Jeremy back, and she has to let him go because he’s just starting his life. (Pot/kettle right here). He loves her though. Turns out Anna did take the necklace because she doesn’t want to be alone – she wants to find her mom. Also, Caroline rescues the Widow Lockwood from Frederick and the gang.
Elena then tells Lexi the current deal with the necklace, and Lexi remembers that the necklace represents something to Stefan about hope during his darkest hour. And he’s like, funny it’s about to be destroyed, huh? Lexi knows she doesn’t have much time at this point, but Elena tells her she knows what to do.
So, Mason and Damon finally get through to where they’re going, but Damon can’t finish the journey because no vamps allowed.
Bonnie and Grams now have the necklace and they’re doing the spell to get rid of these spirits. And a montage begins with ‘This Woman’s Work’ playing over it. It’s about to get emo up in this piece. Suddenly Mason is gone and Damon is alone and Lexi leaves and Elena is alone with Stefan. Grams then leaves and Bonnie cries, and I cry with her. And then I really lose it when Anna is wandering by herself waiting to be poofed away, and she sees her mom. Teeaarrsss. (I may or may not be crying as I write this). They hug, and then they’re gone.
Alaric finds Damon and Damon finally gives him a lame apology for killing him – sometimes I do things I don’t have to do (This kept reminding me of John Locke from LOST – Don’t tell me what I can’t do!).
Elena gets ready to leave Stefan for the night and gives him a speech about wanting him back, but she won’t love a ghost for the rest of her life – deep. Jeremy tries to explain things to Bonnie, and she’s like save it. He leaves, and the necklace that was supposedly destroyed in the fire gets spit back out good as new. We end with Alaric finding some insane cave drawings in the magic room of the Lockwood cellar.
I’m loving it! It was great see all of the old characters, and I’m such a sap. I’m so happy that Anna isn’t alone anymore. It’ll be interesting to see where we go from here because the ghost thing was a major plot this season. I also can’t wait to learn what the deal with these cave drawings are.
The Vampire Diaries airs Thursdays at 8 PM on the CW.
