REVIEW: The Vampire Diaries “Katerina”
November 12th, 2010 by E. Reagan
E here with some more Vampire Diaries action! Our episode this week is “Katerina.” I’ve been waiting patiently for this episode because I’ve wanted some Katherine back story, and now we’re gonna get it. We start our episode back in 1490 with the artist formerly known as Katerina giving birth to a baby. She learns it’s a girl, but she’s not even allowed to hold it as she shamed her family by having a baby out of wedlock. Man, I totally would have watched this episode of Sixteen and Pregnant.
Back in modern day, our boys invite Elena over so that she can hear a little more about the Originals situation from Rose who is still chilling in Mystic Falls. She tells them how powerful Klaus is and how Elijah was just a foot soldier (dang, we’re in trouble now). Elena is not in the mood to deal with Vamp Drama so she tells them she’s going to school. And she doesn’t want Stefan to accompany her.
Over at the school, Jeremy continues to get his mack on with Bonnie. His game actually isn’t too bad. I’ve seen worse. We also meet Luka (who I’ve been excited to see after hearing about the character for awhile now). Him and Bonnie definitely have a chemistry thing going on.
So, it turns out, Elena has no plans to go to school today, and she has Caroline cover for her with Stefan. Caroline tells her that she’s no good with duplicity, ha. (It looks like Kevin Williamson is using his Dawson’s Creek thesaurus). So, Elena is actually going to see Katherine to try to get some answers (Caroline moves the stone wall because she’s a vampire beast, love it). Katherine comes out and is looking weak as hell, but Elena bribes her with her story with small drinks of blood. She tells Elena that she met Klaus in 1492 (you know, when Columbus was sailing the ocean blue). Her family kicked her out, and she ended up in England where she met him. She was into him at first but wanted to get out of dodge after she learned that he wanted to drain her blood. We flash to Katherine running in the woods at night with Trevor giving her directions to a (safe) house in the woods.
At the Bachelor Pad, Rose and Damon talk about love and shutting off your emotions (I heart you Damon, don’t worry).
Back to Katherine and Elena, we learn that the vampire/werewolf curse was bound with Petrova blood and Petrova blood of the doppelganger is what is needed to lift the curse. Katherine ends up at the house Trevor told her about and an older woman lives there. Rose is there as well (Rose and Trevor seem to be compelling the woman to use her house). Rose in Hulk style angry and puts her in a room until nightfall so that she can return her to Klaus. When she goes to her later, Katherine has cut herself. She’d rather die here than die at Klaus’s hands. Rose doesn’t want this to happen so she feeds her some of her blood to strengthen her (you see where we’re going here, huh?). Trevor comes home. Rose and him argue over his love for Katherine. And then Katherine hangs herself. Of Couuurse. She then wakes as a vampire, eats the lady that lives there, and that’s all she wrote. She tells them that she was just looking out for herself (hey, she’s got daddy issues, what do you want?!).
(Phew, we’re doing a lot of quick scenes today). Rose and Damon decide to go see Slater who is Rose’s much removed connection to the originals. Slater (not A.C. Slater unfortunately. I was able to tell them apart because this Slater had no Geri curl and no bomber jacket) is hanging at a vampire place that has super special windows that protect them from the sunlight. Slater actually seems kind of nice. We learn that he has a million advanced degrees because you know, he has time to kill. We also learn that he communicates to the originals through Craig’s List, which is hilarious. Just outside of the hangout is the very much not-dead Elijah who takes come change from a guitar player’s case and gives him a hundo instead.
Over at the Mystic Grill, Caroline is trying to keep Stefan busy by telling him about the Tyler situation. Also at the Mystic Grill, Bonnie runs into Luka and his dad Dr. Martin. Dr. Martin comments on her last name and asks if her relatives are from Salem (pointed question much?!). Jeremy shows up and Bonnie goes to hang with him and play some pool, which Luka promptly tries to get in on.
We do some more quick scene changes in which Stefan figures out that Caroline is covering for Elena (he thinks she’s with Damon though). We also learn from Katherine that if the curse is broken by a vampire, the werewolves are out of luck and stuck with the curse 4-eva.
Back to Damon and Rose, they’re still talking with Slater when Elijah throws the handful of change through the window. Things get crazy after this as all of these vamps are seeking shelter from the painful sun. Damon gets Rose out of there and to the car. She is really upset because she knows there is no escaping Klaus and the Gang. Also, at the Mystic Grill we learn that Luka is a warlock. Bonnie is so feeling it. Jeremy notices their vibes for each other and backs off because he is a gentleman and a scholar.
Stefan quickly tires of Caroline’s antics and ends up finding Elena with Katherine at the tomb. He tells her not to listen to her lies, but Elena is pretty darn sure she is speaking the truth. We then see a gruesome scene of Katherine back in Bulgaria and discovering that her entire family was murdered by Klaus out of vengeance. She tells Elena and Stefan that they need to realize that doom is quickly making it’s way to Mystic Falls. Katherine also tells them that not only is the Petrova blood needed, but a witch, a werewolf, and a vampire are also part of the plan. (So things are looking pretty grim for Bonnie, Tyler, and Caroline as well). Stefan thinks that Katherine is trying to bargain for her freedom because she has the moonstone (he even calls her a psychotic bitch, woop woop). But, she tells them that she is content in the tomb because when Klaus comes, she “will be the safest psychotic bitch in town.” Ha.
Rose and Damon are chilling at the Bachelor Pad about how he needs to shut off his emotions if he wants to really save Elena. Then they make out and stuff.
Elena goes home and is falling apart in front of Stefan about the future and how the blood of her friends will be on her hands.
Katherine sits in her tombs and looks at the Petrova book that Elena brought her. She finds a picture of her parents with her (a drawing of course), and she looks at it for awhile with a small smile. (Tears here for real. I feel for Katherine. I do).
We end with Rose and Damon in the afterglow of sad, stressed out vampire sex. Rose gets a call from Slater about how they need the moonstone to destroy the curse (this call seems way fishy from the start btw). When they hang up, Elijah is there with Slater somehow compelling him even though vampires can’t generally be compelled. Elijah then compels him to stake himself. (This is sort of sad people. How will he get more degrees?!). And then!!!! Dr. Martin comes from the other room! Oh snap. I actually didn’t see that coming.
I give this episode an A. I loved getting the background on Katherine. I feel like it really puts a lot of the pieces together for why a lot of things happened the way they did. The one thing I don’t understand is why does it have to be Petrova blood. I mean, in the first place, why was it a Petrova. Didn’t the curse happen in Central or South America? Anyway, I’m really excited to see where Luka and Dr. Martin fit into all of this. I also can’t wait for more Katherine. She is super fly.
The Vampire Diaries airs Thursday nights at 8 pm on the CW.
