REVIEW: The Vampire Diaries “Klaus”
April 22nd, 2011 by E. Reagan
E back again to discuss a ridiculously informative episode of The Vampire Diaries entitled “Klaus.” For nerds who love to get information out of their TV shows, this is the episode for you! In fact, there’s so much to learn, we don’t even see half the cast including Bonnie, Jeremy, Caroline, and Matt.
We kick things off pretty much where we left off with Elena waiting for Elijah to come back to life. He does, but he is struggling like whoa. Turns out, he needs to get the heck out of dodge because he hasn’t been invited into the house. Interesting. Elena gets him out, and she goes with him so that they can come up with a plan that doesn’t involve peeps dying. Once they’re out of the house, there’s a gross scene between Damon and Andie (she’s still around?) about her needing to go to work and him wanting a little more blood, blech. Stefan and Damon ponder Elena’s whereabouts, and our boys quickly figure out that Elijah’s out and Elena is with him. Stefan speaks with her on the phone and agrees that they’ll go with Elena’s plan for now. When Damon hears this, he’s all like “what what?” That girl is criz-azy, as are you for listening to her.
Meanwhile, we’re also getting some flashbacks to England, 1492, where Elijah and Klaus are introduced to Katherine for the first time at what seems to be Klaus’s birthday party. My heart is starting to grow a few sizes for Elijah by the way, I sort of heart him.
Elena and Elijah then get to the Widow Lockwood’s house where he compels her to let them in because he needs a suit? This is weird, but I’ll go with it. We then learn about the Original Vampire Family, whee! Turns out him and Klaus are brothers. Elena is shocked, Elijah tells her the phrase she is looking for is “OMG.” Oh Elijah, you so hip. We learn that there are seven kids including them and that the family was wealthy landowners of the human variety pre-vampire.
Back at the Safe House, Stefan gets a call from Jenna wondering where everyone is. She has plans to go meet Klaric (who she thinks is Alaric), and Stefan is like, ugg, stay put, I’ll be right there to explain. Damon has other plans to go rogue with Andie, oh you. Stefan gets to Jenna’s and weirdo Klaric is already there, man, he is such a hassle.
Over at Klaric’s, Katherine is going stir-crazy boozin’ and listening to loud music. Damon and Andie stop by and realize that she is compelled to stay there. He tossed her some vervain so that she can avoid further compelling with the caveat that he will come knockin’ with a favor.
Over at the Gilbert residence, Klaric is being ridiculously creepy and Jenna, is like, umm, what’s going on here? He starts to go on about vampires in a weird creepy, grandpa way. Jenna = still confused. She wants him out because he’s being a creeper of epic proptions. He then tries to take a knife to her, and Stefan steps in. He tells her to get the heck out of there and shows his scary vamp face. She finally listens to someone. Stefan then knocks him out and leaves.
More importantly, we learn from Elijah that the Sun and the Moon curse is not in fact real. They made up all those documents so that the werewolves and vamps would be looking for the doppelganger and the moonstone. The real curse is only on Klaus, boo ya. Elena then gets a call from Stefan about the Jenna Situation (Pretty Little Liars anyone?). He lets her go and she promises to come back, he’s a bit whatevs because her word has been about as good as used toilet paper lately.
We then get another flashback to Katherine and Elijah talking about love and life and how it would be sad to live a life without love. Elijah totes wants her. Klaus has her. Katherine seems sort of into both of them? I don’t know, hard to tell.
Elena gets to Jenna, and Jenna’s little brain can’t take the confusion. Elena tells her that she was just trying to protect her. Jenna learns that everyone knows the deal, and she feels even more like a cuckold. When she learns that they were just trying to protect her, Jenna is like, wait, I’m supposed to protect you! (Wow, it only took her 1.75 seasons to figure that one out). There’s then some hugging and apologizing, but at least Jenna knows what’s going on now. Stefan listens in, also like a creeper. Lots of creepers going on tonight.
Elena and Stefan then talk, there’s some dramatic music. She’s gotta get back to Elijah. Stefan doesn’t want to let her go, but we know who wears the pants in this relationship. Damon comes in and tries to stop her. Stefan is like let her go dude. Damon then gets pissy and they’re all up in each other’s faces.
Back at Klaric’s, Katherine is still dancing around like a fool when Klaric comes back. He wants his body back, and then he sort of turns into an abusive boyfriend on her. It’s sad. But, yay, Greta’s here! (Docta Martin’s daughter). There’s lots of luggage and Klaus’s real body.
Elena is then back with Elijah so we finally get to know the deal with Klaus! Klaus is not their father’s son. He is their mom’s love child from another relationship (Elijah’s dad killed Klaus’s dad and his family). Turns out that ignited a war between….the werewolves and the vampires…because Klaus is from both bloodlines. AHHHHHH!!!! But, the witches didn’t want to let this happen so they made a spell to keep his werewolf side dormant. He’s trying to get this removed so that he can create his own bloodline of crazy monsters. The only way Klaus can die is apparently by the magic of a witch with enough power during the full moon transition. Luckily, we know a witch.
Another flashback, Elijah found a way to avoid killing the doppelganger and Klaus is like ehhh, she’s human, who cares? Klaus hassles Elijah for caring. He wants the sacrifice to go on as planned. But, Elijah still has the info, so hopefully Elena can make it to Season three alive, yay. (I mean obviously, but still, it’s nice). Elena understands that Elijah cared for Katherine, and he understands that a lot of people made that mistake.
At the Safe House, our boys start getting rowdy again. Stefan doesn’t care if Damon loves Elena because it means he’ll protect her, but Stefan has her respect. I don’t know why, but this made me laugh a little.
We then learn in a flashback that Katherine fled. Klaus is really pissed and will have Elijah killed if she isn’t found. (Seriously, who put this jerk in charge?)
Elijah and Elena arrive at the Safe House and they all sort of make a deal to work together. Damon is none too pleased though, but he wants to protect Elena. He storms off to his room where Andie is waiting even though he told her to leave. She tries to turn our bad boy good, and he sucks her blood hard. She cries, and he tells her (compels her that is) to get out of there before he kills her.
Over at Klaric’s, Greta and Maddox are doing a spell. We know it’s a spell because they’re talking in another language and in a circle of candles (this is the #1 way to know something is a spell around these parts). The spell transfers Klaus out of Alaric and into his original body. Alaric is Alaric again, but he passes out. And Klaus is there in his full jerkishness.
Loved this episode! Definitley a solid A- (there needs to be E tears for an A to be rewarded). There was obviously not a ton of plot movement, but some for sure. However, we learned an incredible amount of information. I can honestly say that I didn’t see it coming about the Klaus vamp/werewolf thing. Nice work people. It also seems that Greta doesn’t mind being with Klaus (maybe she’s compelled though, I don’t know). I really can’t wait to see what our next steps are and how to save the doppelganger. I really would like to know how the Elijah/Klaus family became vampires though. But, I can be patient.
The Vampire Diaries airs Thursday nights at 8 pm on the CW Network.
