REVIEW: The Vampire Diaries “Masquerade”

Masquerade

E here again for some more Vampire Diaries. Have I told you all lately how much I love The Vampire Diaries? Because I do, I love it. A ridiculous amount.  “Masquerade” proved to be no exception; this was an awesome episode and action packed as always. We start the episode with Caroline telling a little story to Damon and Stefan about how she saw Katherine at the Mystic Grill when she was doing a little stalking of our good friend Matt.  Katherine told Caroline that she wants the moonstone, and the boys better bring it to the Masquerade Ball that evening.  Damon spouts that “Katherine’s not getting dick.” Heh.

Over at the Gilbert’s, Matt helps Elena and Jeremy get Aunt Jenna home and settled.  What is Matt doing there? This is weird, right? Also, shouldn’t Alaric be helping with this? Dude is the worst boyfriend ever.

We also check-in on Katherine at the weird boarding house she’s staying at.  Ms. Flowers helps her to bring some bags up because someone just had to go on a shopping spree at the local mall (I was a a little worried for Miss Flower’s safety, but she’s all good, don’t worry).  A random chick that pops out of somewhere in the room (after Ms. Flowers leaves) and Katherine immediately does her crazy throat choke/wall pushing thing that she’s so fond of.  (She’s so twitchy!).  We then find out that this is Lucy, a witch who owes Katherine a favor and will help her with this moonstone business tonight.  (And also, the fact that she is related to Bonnie is the worst kept secret ever for the majority of this episode).  We also learn Katherine wants a curse to be broken.

Meanwhile, the Scoobies are gathered at the Salvatore Bachelor Pad to discuss a plan for the evening. The group includes Stefan, Damon, Jeremy, Alaric, Caroline, and a reluctant Bonnie. They’re hatching a plan for the evening, and I start getting really excited. I love a plan; it’s so thrilling! They even go around the circle to make sure everyone is in, woo boy!

Matt then leaves Elena’s (but still seems sorta into her).  But not before cryptically telling Elena that he has to go to the Masquerade for mysterious reasons that he can’t share with anyone, sketch city and Matt is the mayor.

Party Preparation! The Widow Lockwood and Tyler are chilling before the party talking about how Hot Uncle Mason is flaky (he’s not flaky, he’s dead, tear).  Our little soon to be werewolf also apologizes to mama for being a dick.  Feelings! Let’s get this party started! Katherine walks in looking smokin’ as always and compels Matt a little more to make sure he does his bidness. Also, annoying Amy and Sarah are back (spoiler alert: not for long!).  Jeremy and Bonnie are teamed up for most of this event, and I get a little tender towards Bonnie when she tells Jeremy the reason she doesn’t want to be a witch because it has never ended well for her relatives.  Also, Bonnie literally felt that Lucy was in the room (chills!), but Lucy played it cool when Bonnie confronted her.

Katherine then insists that Stefan dance with her and while they do Amy comes up to them and of course mistakes Katherine for Elena.  Katherine then tells Amy that her necklace is crooked and that she’ll help straighten it.  She then paralyzes her from the waist down with a simple snap, and then kills her! Ahh! We don’t play on this show, for real! (Also, thank you Katherine! Amy sucked).  Stefan wants to call of the plan at this point, but we continue on.  Jeremy then gives Katherine a message to meet our boys down at the river.  She thinks something is up and goes to Caroline to see the deal who confesses that Bonnie is there, and they have a whole scheme. She then tells Katherine where to find Bonnie, and Katherine goes into a room only to be trapped in there by an invisible force field (thanks Bonnie!). (Phew, I was almost about to get mad at Caroline, but she was in on it the whole time. It was all part of the plan!).

Back at her house, Elena realizes something is up because Alaric is doing a piss poor job keeping things in check.  She sneaks out of the house to get to the party to see what is up.  Stefan and Damon enter into the room where Katherine is being held and start to hurt her, which in turn hurts Elena in the same places!! (Ahh, this is so awesome!).  Bonnie figures out the deal and lets the boys know so that they stop hurting Katherine.  Also, Jeremy gives Elena his ring to protect her (tear, I’m starting to really get my Jeremy love on).  Also, Damon calls Katherine an “evil slut vampire who only loved herself.” Love it so much.

Next, we’re in the Dead Mayor’s old office and Matt, Tyler, and Sarah are getting their party on.  Matt starts to put Katherine’s plan into place by pouring alcohol on the floor and onto a picture of Tyler and his dad. (I actually start to get a little nauseous at this point because I hate that Matt is a pawn and that he is attacking Tyler about his dead dad. I don’t know, it makes me squicky).  Tyler is actually doing an amazing job and keeping calm and doesn’t fight back.  Caroline then rushes in and keeps the boys apart and eventually knocks Matt out. Sarah then picks up a knife and goes after Tyler and says “if Matt fails, I can’t.” I guess Katherine really covers her bases, huh? She stabs him and he instinctively knocks her down.  She hits her head and instantly dies (that was some foreshadowing from a few weeks ago, huh?). Tyler then begins to phase into a wolf, bummer for him.

Our boys are still in the room chatting with Katherine when Stefan asks her who’s running from. She doesn’t answer and instead tells him that she’s been stalking him for the last hundred or so years. Downstairs, Bonnie engages in a battle of the magics with Lucy as Lucy senses she has the moonstone.  Next scene, Lucy goes up the room where our boys and Katherine are gives her the moonstone.  Damon warns her not to take it, but she does anyway.  Once she has her hands on it, she starts to choke and eventually passes out.  Lucy tells Katherine that she is annoyed that she didn’t tell her another witch is involved (a Bennett no less!).  She then apologizes to Damon and Stefan.  Yay for the good guys! She also tells them that she lifted the spell and Elena is safe now.

Also, Caroline is helping to clean up the mess with Tyler so that everyone thinks it is a completely non-sketchy accident.  Tyler tells Caroline that she doesn’t understand the magnitude of this, and she explains that she really, truly does.

Lucy and Bonnie then have a little heart-to-heart where Bonnie learns that they are related (no kidding).  I get a little emotional again as Lucy tells Bonnie that she needs to be in the middle of all of this because she’s one of the good ones.  (I love this stuff, I’m such a cornball).  Lucy also tells Bonnie that she’ll be back (yay!).  Also, I think Jeremy and Bonnie are going to get their make-out on at some point.

Stefan finds Elena and is pretty pleased that they can be together again.  But, not so fast Stefan.  Elena says that she loves him but can’t be with him until she feels safe.  Katherine then wakes up in cellar where she originally is supposed to be and is trapped there with some magic of course.  Damon goes to close the door on her and she tells him not to because she has some information.  According to Katherine, Elena needs to be protected because she is the doppelganger. She even says, why do you think I haven’t killed her yet.  DRAMA!!

We end with Elena walking to her car alone and a creepy masked guy comes out of nowhere and grabs her.  END SCENE!

Loved this episode, Awesome on like 9 million levels.  It reminded me of some old school Buffy episodes with everyone in on the plan.  I give it an A+ for sure.  We’ve now opened so many doors with Tyler being a werewolf, Bonnie getting into her power, Lucy as a reoccurring character, and of course the doppelganger business. I also like that Elena didn’t get right back together with Stefan.  This show just keeps getting better, and I can’t wait to see where they take us next!

The Vampire Diaries airs Thursday nights at 8 pm on the CW.
