E back again for another look at what’s going in Mystic Falls. And boy did we have some action on [the-vampires-diaries] this week with “The Dinner Party.”

We start out still at the cabin (shouldn’t they have come home by now? weird) with Elena reading the not really lost Jonathan Gilbert diaries. The Gilbert of yesteryear is having a little dinner party himself when he and his posse hear some noise outside. His friend goes to check and Jonathan goes after him. He uses his little vamp compass to prove that they’ve all left town, but alas, they have not. Stefan comes and does some old-fashioned feeding. The rest of the entry references him dying here, but he clearly didn’t die because you know, he wrote the diary entry. Meanwhile, Stefan and Damon are chitchatting on their cell phones about how it’s awesome Tyler left town and that the killing is about to go down (hey, that rhymes!).

Over in Mystic Falls, Jenna and Elijah (with his historian persona not his vamp persona) are walking around the Fells property and talking about more Mystic Falls lore. Alaric joins them and it’s sort of awkward. When Jenna walks away, Elijah makes a quip about rarely pursuing younger women (oh, you!).

Jeremy and Bonnie are enjoying their time at the Grill when Luka comes over asking about what the heck happened to the half a day that he is missing from his memory. Bonnie and Jeremy try to play it cool, but they kind of suck at it in my opinion.

Back at the cabin, Elena and Stefan are still in a bit of a fightin’ match. Elena asks him about attacking her ancestor, and Stefan fills her in on more of the sordid details of the past (I’m pretty sure he hung out with Lestat from “Interview with the Vampire” for awhile). Stefan pretty much relished in the killing while Damon was a lot more concerned about getting caught. Stefan had his prime pick of victims during the civil war because things were sort of crazy. This is also when he meets Lexi who sets him on the right path. (Side note: I want to like Lexi, I really do. But, I can’t. Because I know that it is Lindsay from the Gilmore Girls, and I just can’t handle her).

It turns out that as usual everyone is at the grill today (because if there’s not a town event, what else is there to do?!). Anyway, Damon, Andie, and Alaric are chatting. Damon and Alaric talk as they normally would because Damon has Andie under a pretty deep compulsion; it’s sort of hilarious if not a little sad. Jenna and Elijah come over and more tense chatting occurs. Damon suggests a dinner party at the Bachelor Pad for this evening. Splendid! After sending out his Twilight themed invitations, Damon goes to see Katherine to see if she has any info about killing an Original. He gives her some blood because she is looking ROUGH. She doesn’t want Eiljah to die because then she’ll be trapped in the tomb forever since he put her here. (OK, who saw her fib coming from a mile away?).

Over at the Bachelor Pad, Andie and Jenna are doing some party-setup while Jenna laments the fact that she feels like Alaric is hiding something. In another room, Alaric and Damon talk about killing Elijah that very night. Alaric is concerned that it is a bad idea and Damon has the line of the night: “There’s no such thing as a bad idea, just poorly executed awesome ones.” (Love it, someone has been hanging out with Barney Stinson too much). We then have our party crasher arrive: Uncle/Daddy John! When Elijah gets there, he wants Damon to reconsider any foolishness that may be scheduled to go down. Dinner time! There’s some witch discussion including the famed witches of Salem.

Over at the lake house, Elena is reading more and learns some about killing the Originals. It turns out that the magic sword can only be used by humans. (So, John totally gave the sword to Damon so that he would kill himself in the process of killing Elijah, blamo). Luckily, Stefan is able to get a hold of Alaric who is able to stop Damon before it’s too late. We also learn that the witch burial ground is also part of Elijah’s plan.

Everyone returns to the table while Jenna gets dessert. Andie asks Alaric to get a notebook from her bag. There’s some rustling while Damon, Elijah, and John are all at the table. Alaric comes over and stabs Elijah!! Crap, I was not expecting that. It was sort of insane.

Elena and Stefan are still being annoying at the lake house while he tries to teach her a life lesson about not giving up. More Lexi flashbacks where she explains that when you can hurt, you can love (deep). More info about killing the Originals drips out. Turns out, the dagger needs to stay in the victim. Woops. Elijah comes back to life and goes to see Docta M. This crew is mad.

Over at the Gilbert Residence, Jeremy and Bonnie are working on some spells and just when they’re about to get somewhere interesting, Docta M comes over demanding to know what she knows now. She tells him and explains that they should work together. He instead takes her power. Bummer.

Elijah has just arrived at the lake house looking for Elena. He’s holding some rocks, so you all know what’s going to happen here. He throws him through the door making it explode (he loves that parlor trick!). He can’t get in, but he says that he can certainly wait her out. Elena tells him that she’ll just bleed herself and have Stefan turn her unless he promises to abide by their original deal. Elijah calls her bluff. He so shouldn’t have done that because Elena is sort of a rock star. She definitely stabs herself like a boss! Elijah totally capitulates at this point and Elena falls out of the doorway so that he can heal her. She instead stabs him with the magical sword. (So much action!!!). We leave the sword in this time. Damon comes out from around the corner. Intrigue!

Back at the Gilbert residence, Jenna wants answers from Alaric about Isobel. He is completely shady, and she walks away. John walks in and continues to be a thorn in Alaric’s side. Alaric gives up his ring so that he’ll back off and also tells him that he’ll probably need it more right now, heh.

Elena, Damon, and Stefan all dump Elijah’s body in the basement where Elena proclaims that things are her way or the highway from now on. We get another flashback where Lexi tells Damon that he’s got to get his hate under control. True story. Back in the present, Damon walks into his room and Katherine is there showering. Turns out that it was all an act. She totally wanted Elijah dead because then his compulsion would be over. She also apparently wants to help. (Well, that sounds like a terrible idea).

Love it! For real. This gets an A because I like to still be surprised on occasion. I didn’t see the Alaric thing coming at all. I wasn’t as surprised by Elena, but still a great scene. I think we got a lot more good character development for several of our main characters. I definitely have more questions now though. What’s Katherine after? What is Docta M going to do now? When will Bonnie get her powers back? Can we finally let Jenna in on things? Can’t wait for next week!

The Vampire Diaries airs Thursday nights at 8 pm on the CW.

  • So many questions after this episode. What are they going to do now that their special knife is in Elijah? Wouldn’t Klaus have been the better target for the only knife that can kill an Original or are there more of these floating around (which seems silly since it was rare and hard to come by in the first place)? Why aren’t they dismembering Elijah and burning his remains? Why was Damon dazed enough to not think through Katherine’s being held in the tomb by Elijah’s compulsion and obviously once he was dead the spell would be broken? While there was lots of entertainment this week, my paranormal universe was turned upside down by the plot holes and I was left sort of disappointed and sad.

  • See, I think they were probably like this guy is an immediate issue, so let’s stab him and deal with Klaus later. Hopefully they’ll get around to some dismembering and burning so that the knife will be reusable, ha.

The Damon thing made sense to me because he’s always been so easily taken in by Katherine. I think he still has trouble seeing beyond the fact that she doesn’t love him. He’s just too cute to be that smart as well!

Ladies, some interesting thoughts here. I think that Damon was honestly too busy trying to figure out the Elijah issue to worry about Katherine getting out of the tomb. Also, I think that Klaus will be dealt with when they can get to him, which Katherine (or hopefully the return of Isobel) is the key to.

I think we haven’t seen the last of Elijah because they will probably need the dagger again. And next week where Elena and Katherine talk looks pretty amazing.
