The End of The Affair

E here for some more madness on The Vampire Diaries. This episode is entitled “The End of the Affair.” Well, that can’t be good news.

We start with Katherine calling Damon for a chat as he has his morning booze. There’s some banter, and we learn that she knows Klaus and Stefan are in Chicago.

We then visit the dynamic duo in Chicago (which is indeed one of Stefan’s old murder stomping grounds). Get ready for some flashbacks! We visit the 1920s because who doesn’t love to do the Charleston? All you need to know for the set-up here is that Stefan has ridiculous hair. And we see him killing a lady. Also, he visits a speakeasy where peeps seem to know him including the lounge singer. A vamp chick comes up to him and can still smell his recent kill on him. Sexy?

Back to the present, Klaus and Stefan are going to see one of Klaus’s favorite witches to figure out why he is sort of failing at life right now. He wants his hybrid army, and he wants it now!

Back in Mystic Falls, Elena wakes up to Damon in her bed (there’s worse problems to have). But, she flips of course. There’s some more banter (there’s a lot of banter in this episode). Anyway, he tells her that Stefan is in Chicago, and it has nothing to do with meeting Oprah…(he’s more of a Stedman kind of guy).

Also in Mystic Falls is poor Caroline who is being tortured by her dad in her ancestor’s torture chamber (sunlight once he gets her ring off, vervain gas, etc.). Let’s all pool our money for Caroline’s therapy bills, shall we? He’s also teasing her with blood like a creeper.

Damon and Elena road trip it to Chicago (They get there seemingly pretty quick, which is weird. I guess Damon went to driving school with the Cullen Family – yeah, I said it.) Damon wants Elena to read Stefan’s diary so she can really get the full picture of how gross he was. More banter. Hey, look, Elena’s necklace from Stefan – this is relevant to the plot, dudes.

Klaus and Stefan go to the speakeasy from the 20s and the lounge singer is still working there because she is a super powerful witch with access to awesome crap that keeps her young(ish). She knows he’s there to solve his hybrid army problem. They need to contact the witch who created the spell and to do so, they need Rebekah. Stefan finds a picture of Klaus and him from B in the D, and is like whaaatt?

Caroline’s dad is still doing the old torture regimen (he should talk to Sayid Jarrah; LOST anyone?). She keeps trying to explain that she doesn’t eat people for funsies, but he keeps insisting on repressing her vampness.

Damon and Elena are now in Stefan’s old apartment in Chicago (it’s weird that it’s just there, it seems like other people should live there now). He shows her this creepy list in a secret closet of all of his victims. Blech, Stefan is officially Creepy McCreeperson (wait, let me make that Italian for you — Creepo Creepuiseppe). Damon then has two awesome lines. He calls Stefan a cocky ripper douche – love it. He also says that he indulged in a few Daisy Buchanans. (Golly good gracious, I love me a good Great Gatsby reference).

Back to Stefan and Klaus – Stefan is assuming he had blackouts because he does not remember Klaus. So, we do some more flashing back to Stefan with the vamp chick. And look, there’s Klaus. He comments on the ridiculous hair (thank you Klaus!). The girl is Rebekah, and she is also Klaus’s sister. (Nice, my husband has been wanting more info on the family; this will please him). Make a note that she has on the necklace that Elena currently wears. We do a quick flash to modern day where Stefan and Klaus are in a warehouse with the family coffins – Klaus brings her back to life because we need her for this spell business. Okay, back to the flashback. Stefan, Klaus (who is going by Nick in the past – it took me approximately 8 years to figure out how you get Nick out of Klaus but then I remembered that Klaus’s real name is Niklaus, phew) and Rebekah are partying it up at the speakeasy. Stefan works some magic on a dude and his wife and makes him drink his wife’s blood (seriously, all of you team Stefan people are just weirdos at this point). He asks the dude his name. Klaus tells Stefan he has a secret to show him, and they go to his old apartment. This is a serious close call for Elena, but Stefan doesn’t let Klaus knows he sees her. They have a little looksy loo. He sees his list of names. (Okay, this bothered me re: Klaus not knowing Elena was there. Shouldn’t he have smelled her or something?) Anyway, they leave and Damon comes back (he was visiting Gloria at the bar trying to do some recon). They devise a plan to get Stefan back where Damon distracts Klaus and Elena uses her wiles to get Stefan home (this plan has winner written all over it for sure).

Klaus fills in a few more blanks for Stefan and tells him that he wanted him because he was such an awesome torturer, but Stefan also wanted to be his wingman in the past.

Meanwhile, Caroline’s dad is still putting in his entry for dad of the year (well at least he cried when he found out about her?). He’s going to call it quits for the night because the sun went down, and I mean, you can’t torture your daughter all night (a guy’s gotta eat!). When he goes to leave, Mama Sheriff comes with a gun to get Caroline out. And it’s awesome. Tyler is her back-up. They get Caroline out of there pretty darn easily. She explains to the dad that it’s still her daughter.

Back to Klaus and Stefan. Stefan wants to know why Klaus sacrificed his girlfriend if they were such good friends. We then flash back to the 20s where wooden bullets start flying. Klaus grabs Rebekah and gets the heck out of dodge, but not before compelling Stefan to forget about them until he tells him otherwise (man, dude had a plan back then?). Stefan ponders why he had to cover their tracks…unless he’s running from someone. Klaus ends story-time just in time for Stefan to see Damon out of the corner of his eye. Stefan goes and explains to Damon for the 3rd time that he needs to stay away. Hey, look, Elena’s there to win him home! Damon goes in and distracts Klaus at this point. There’s some banter and some choking and some potential staking (but Gloria puts an end to that fast). Back outside, Elena tried to drug Stefan to get him home (yeah, that was going to work). He gets rough with her and is like dude, for serious, I’m not coming home. We’re over. Damon and Elena pack it in at this point and go home.

Also, Caroline is home, yay! Mama Sheriff and her are having some warm and fuzzy moments together. Then Tyler comes for cuddles. What a heartwarming scene. I think I sort of mean that. Caroline has epic amounts of sadness about her daddy issues.

So, Rebekah is awake and stabs Klaus – she is mad at him for taking Stefan away. We flash to the past where they’re getting out of town. She wonders where Stefan is; Klaus explains. She says she’s going to stay and find Stefan so Klaus unleashes the beast and stakes her for preservation purposes. Back to modern day, Stefan enters and Rebekah is as pleased as punch. Klaus looks at Stefan and says Now. Stefan remembers everything and he is definitely digging Rebekah. We then discuss the spell. It turns out Rebekah needs her necklace (you know, the one Elena has). Rebekah lost it at the nightclub, and Stefan grabbed it because finder’s keepers!

We end with another little phone chat with Damon and Katherine. And then we flash to the past; she was at the club also peeping at Stefan with a ridiculous wig. Also, Katherine is indeed in Chicago.

I enjoyed this episode. I was a little worried at first because 1920s flashbacks can be super cheesy, but this was pretty alright (except for Stefan’s hair, which they did make fun of). I was very pleased to meet another one of the Originals, and I can’t wait to see where we go with this. I also want to know more about Gloria. So, will Stefan sell out Elena because she has the necklace? I don’t think so!

The Vampire Diaries airs Thursday nights at 8 PM on the CW.
