REVIEW: The Vampire Diaries “The House Guest”
February 25th, 2011 by E. Reagan
E back again for your last The Vampire Diaries recap until April! We’ve had quite the February sweeps, and “The House Guest” definitely was an interesting end cap to what’s happened so far in Season 2.
We kick things off with Elena and Stefan getting ready for school and engaging in some last minute making out. (Seriously Aunt Jenna? Your teenage niece should be sleeping at home). Damon is downstairs and Katherine is still there. Stefan comes down and is confused. They don’t know who is who. There’s some choking of the real Elena. You know, your basic Parent Trap shenanigans. In any case, Katherine wants to join the kill Klaus faction.
At school, Matt and Caroline chat about Tyler leaving. Matt also gets a little my way or the highway and tells Caroline that she needs to decide whether or not she wants to be with him. Now also at school, Elena and Stefan discuss the possibility of Katherine working with them, and Elena lets Stefan know that she can’t sleepover with him that night because she has a normal teenage girl sleepover with her friends.
Back at the Bachelor Pad, Damon is trying to blow torch the heck out of Elijah. No dice! Dude is indestructible, that’s sort of awesome. Katherine wonders in and they bicker a bit. He’s annoyed that she was prepared to let him die by stabbing Elijah, and she tells him that she didn’t care who paid the price for her getting out of the tomb.
I guess we’ve decided to actually spend some time at school for once because Bonnie and Stefan are at the lockers discussing the possibility of talking to Docta M to get him on their side. Jeremy and Bonnie also exchange a quick kiss (I think I sort of like them together). Elsewhere in the school, Alaric and Elena talk about possibly telling Jenna about the whole deal and then some.
Luka, Docta M, Stefan, and Bonnie have a tense meeting at the Grill to discuss working together. Docta M seems sort of interested, but we find out after that he’s really not. He has a plan to bring Elijah back to take care of business (Docta M! We could have all been friends. But, now I have to hate you).
Damon does some research and talks with Katherine. We learn that a when a witch dies a violent death, they release an energy marking the spot. If you’re on this burial ground with the Original, you don’t need the fancy killing dagger. (I gotta say, this needs a little more explanation. It seems sort of convoluted right now).
Time for product placement! At the Gilbert residence, Bonnie, Elena, and Caroline are hanging while Caroline breezes through pictures of her and Matt on her fancy new interwebz tablet. Aunt Jenna comes in and female whining commences.
On the other side of town, Docta M and Luka are starting their spell to bring Elijah back. In this spell, Docta M grounds himself while connecting with Luka. They then transport Luka’s invisible spirit to the Bachelor Pad (because that’s where Elijah’s body is). Katherine goes down to get a blood flavored capri sun and senses something is off. She sees the dagger coming out of Elijah (Luka is doing this in spirit form). She wrestles him a bit. Luka is talking to his dad and letting him know that Elena is fighting him. Docta M tells him that the person fighting him is actually Katherine and he needs to stake her. So he does. Damon then comes in and blow torches him!!! This actually lights the real Luka on fire. Docta M puts the fire out with a little stop, drop, and roll action. But it’s too late, he’s dead. He then turns into Willow from Buffy Season 6 and is out for revenge. Stefan gets to Docta M’s when they figure out the deal and Docta M does his headache thing to him.
Meanwhile, the ladies are getting their fun on at the Grill because there’s live music, woop. Alaric and Jenna bicker a bit when she sees him there. Caroline then gets up on stage to sing 80s songs and declare her love for Matt. He’s totes into it and they make out on stage and then in the bathroom (kids these days!).
At the Bachelor Pad, Damon brings some blood to Katherine to help her heal but stabs her a little first to get her back from almost getting him killed. He finds out from her that she has some weird convoluted deal with Isobel and John to help out or they’ll have Stefan killed. (Umm, isn’t she like easily able to kill John and probably stronger than Isobel also? Whatevs). She also lets Damon know that she chose Stefan over him. They then decide to go after Docta M to stop him from killing Elena.
Back at the Grill, Bonnie asks Elena for permission or whatever to date Jeremy. She’s cool with it. This is sort of the least of what’s about to go down.
Docta M gets to the Grill and starts bursting lights with his mind. People are running around. It’s turning into a basic horror show. Stefan and Elena talk to Caroline as they have a plan. Elena pleads with Docta M to cool his jets. And Caroline jumps him while Elena flees. Docta M shows Caroline who’s boss and Matt goes to help her. Docta M then shivs Matt with a broken bottle, sweet. Docta M is outta there as people are fleeing, madness. Caroline then feeds her blood to Matt who’s sort of freaking out even in his injured state.
Back at the Gilbert residence, Jeremy and Bonnie are discussing the situation when Stefan and Elena show up. Stefan is like, uhh, hey dummies, did you search the house? Upstairs, Docta M is lurking for Elena in the bathroom. He makes his move; hey, that’s not Elena, it’s Katherine! Score. She totally schools him. Everyone comes to see the ruckus and the dead body. But, wait, he’s not dead! He comes back for a moment and grabs Bonnie; Katherine quickly breaks his neck. Done. Elena and Katherine then have a little pissy moment.
On the porch, Alaric and Jenna are talking and he tells her that he can’t tell her everything right now because some things are not his secrets to tell. Jenna then explains that she can handle a lot because she used to smoke pot and now she’s a parent (Uhh, not to point out the obvious, but you’re sort of doing a horrible job Aunt Jenna).
Jeremy and Bonnie kiss, and she shows him that her powers are back. Docta M gave them to her along with the method to kill Klaus. She looks sort of suspicious in my honest opinion.
Back at the Bachelor Pad, Katherine crawls into bed with Damon who is doing some more research. Katherine confesses to turning Emily Bennett in (man, she sort of sucks). She also tries to make a move and Damon totally turns her down. Boo ya.
Over at Caroline’s, Matt is waking up and is sort of freaking out. Caroline explains that she is a vampire and Matt rues the day he didn’t believe his sister about vamps being in town. He also seems to think Caroline had something to do with her death. This is your basic hot mess.
We end with Mama Isobel arriving at the Gilbert residence. Aunt Jenna is all like “what?!?!”
Solid end to February sweeps: A-. I can’t believe we have to wait over a month for a new episode. Boo to that. This was pretty great though and opened a ton of interesting doors. I can’t wait to see more about Aunt Jenna and Matt perhaps knowing a little more. I’m also interested to see what the plan is for killing Klaus. I hope Bonnie is still working for the good guys; she looks kind of shifty. Also, what’s Isobel want out of this? And is Docta M going to haunt the Gilbert residence since he died a violent death there? So many questions!

So glad that in the first 20 minutes all my questions and doubts about the last episode were addressed and I felt that all was right in the world of Mystic Falls. Unbelievably proud of Damon for not falling for Katherine’s romantical antics…and Aunt Jenna, as always, never disappoints in the Worst Parent Ever category.
One thing I can’t remember…does Matt have vervain and that’s why Caroline didn’t/couldn’t compel him to listen to her explain that she didn’t kill Vicki and calm him down post-near-death?

In response to Rachael, I’m not sure whether or not Matt has been “vervained” (although, if he hasn’t been, Elena AND Caroline are kinda slacking, since Katherine compelling Matt almost got him killed during the whole Tyler-the-teen-wolf incident). Anyway, if Matt hasn’t been vervained, I’m thinking part of the reason why Caroline doesn’t compel him is because that seems a little shady; like using her vampireness–which he’s obviously freaked out by–to make him calm down/listen to her. I don’t know; maybe she’ll use it next episode, but I have a feeling Matt knowing the truth is gonna open up a whole new can of worms with Alaric wanting/needing to tell Jenna everything–not to mention more questions about what really happened to Vicki, AND why Tyler skipped town. No truth for an un-vervained Tyler, means no messy questions to answer. And we all like messy episodes.
Just my two cents.
