E here again for some more Vampire Diaries. This episode is entitled “The Hybrid.” I’m going to be honest, I wasn’t in love with this episode. I actually preferred the B and C plots more than Klaus trying to build his own weirdo army. And I do enjoy Klaus, I don’t know, I wasn’t digging it. But the whole thing is saved for me with the last 10 seconds of the episode, awesome.

Anyway, we start with Damon ripping down his info maps about Stefan’s whereabouts while listening to the news about the tragic death of a one Miss Andie Starr. Elena sneaks in and there is some more chit chat about whether Stefan is ‘gone’ (in more ways than one) or not. Damon really wants Elena to drop the whole thing.

Meanwhile, Alaric is pounding some 40s over at this apartment. Elena shows up there as well (man, she’s really shaping up to be sort of a pain as of late). She wants to know what he knows, but he’s reluctant to get involved again. He does end up spilling the beans about what he knows about Stefan’s location.

We then flash to the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee where Klaus and Stefan (with Simon Camden/Ray on his back) are taking a jaunty little park stroll. They are on a mission to find the wolf pack (anyone else always think of ‘The Hangover’ when the pack is mentioned? Just me? Ok, moving on). Yay for them, they find it. And the wolf folks have heard of Klaus to which he responds, “You’ve heard of me, fantastic.” It sounds like someone has a self-esteem problem.

Now, this was my favorite storyline of the night for whatever reason – Tyler and the Widow Lockwood. The Widow Lockwood is getting her drink on early because she is stressed. She puts some vervain into the coffee to test Tyler. He drinks it, nothing happens except for a spoiled cup of coffee. The Widow breathes a sigh of relief because frankly, I think she sort of hates this vampire job. They then have some banter about sneaking Caroline out like a prostitute. (If I ever have to have this conversation with my son, I’m just going to go ahead and say PARENT FAIL). When Ty leaves, she calls some dude named Bill to deal with the Caroline problem. She says, “I’ve gotten myself into a vampire situation.” Ha, did you ever lady?!

Also, Jeremy is with Matt and tells him that he wants his help to contact Vicki who has asked for his help.

Elena is now at the Mystic Grill hounding Tyler for info about where Stefan is because he may know where the wolves are. Perhaps the state park? Ty is doing some more pondering about where Caroline is. Elena is sort of checked-out from that because she needs to find her precious Stefan!! Elena then convinces a reluctant and slightly drunk Alaric to go with her to find Stefan in TN.

Back to Klaus and the Ripper (sort of like Jesse and the Rippers but less failing musicians and more blood), Simon/Ray wakes up and Klaus makes him feed from a human to complete his turn.

Back at the Grille, Tyler and Matt banter about the missing Caroline. Matt then offers to help Tyler with his werewolf change that night. (Oh Matt, never change). Tyler drinks some coffee there, and it tastes gross like from the morning. Matt tells him that Mama Sheriff has him put vervain in it every once in awhile (humans can’t taste it but werewolves can apparently). Ty realizes what his mom did this morning. (Meanwhile, his mom is on the phone with this Bill dude who wants to kill Caroline).

Elena and Alaric are hiking in the TN woods looking for Stefan. We learn that Alaric is not only sort of a vampire slayer but also a boyscout and a whiskey drinking all-around lost cause. Elena gives him her magic ring so he doesn’t meet his Maker this evening. Hey, look, Damon’s here! And he throws Elena in the water. Oh, you! Alaric is like, hey lady, we needed back-up. Elena still really wants to find Stefan and everyone thinks she’s sort of a dummy.

Also in the woods, Klaus and Stefan are talking about his hybrid army that he’s trying to build. Stefan thinks it’s sort of a bad idea and questions what their loyalty will be. Klaus reminds Stefan that it’s “not difficult to be loyal when you’re on the winning team.” (Klaus FTW). Stefan hears them talking and then there’s a little fight with Simon/Ray who bites him and runs off. Klaus won’t cure him until he comes back with Simon/Ray. (Oh Klaus, you and your ways).

This was my favorite scene of the episode: Tyler confronts the Widow Lockwood and is all like, let’s skip the part where we pretend that we don’t know there are vampires in this town. She’s taken aback. He demands to know where Caroline is. She doesn’t want him involved because Caroline is a monster! Tyler is about to show her what a monster looks like

Elena, Alaric, and Damon are still on the hunt when they run into Simon/Ray who is rabid and crazy for realz and starts to turn into a wolf after they tied him up. They’re confused because it’s not night yet. We also learn that the rest of the hybrids are all sort of junky like this – they’re more like zombies. BRAINS!!!

Jeremy and Matt are looking through Vicki’s stuff when Matt decides this is too hard for him. When Jeremy leaves, Matt notices a picture of him and his sister has flipped itself up from being face down. Anyway, Tyler drags his mom down to his chain-me-up area and shows her the deal. She’s really confused at first but then is like AHH! My notes say “she be freakin.” Yep.

Damon is now fighting Simon/Ray when Stefan comes and saves him by ripping Simon/Ray’s heart out. Stefan then tries to get across the Stay Away Brother message again.

Alaric and Elena are waiting in the car and Alaric says he’ll take care of the humans, aww. Elena then tries to play therapist about his drinking alone and all that. Alaric says she is a sucker for a lost cause, true story. Elena wants them to be a fake family again. Alaric then says “I’m keeping the ring then.” Ha, love it. Damon comes back and Stefan watches them leave, tear.

Matt decides to help Jeremy after all and comes over to the Gilbert residence with some beer (boy these kids drink a lot). Jeremy and Matt talk about how Jeremy doesn’t actually have a memory of when Vicki died because Elena had it taken from him. Vicki then appears and asks Jeremy for help; she can apparently come back. Matt knows he’s seeing her. A window breaks and then Anna appears to Jeremy. She tells him not to trust Vicki (this scene gave me the chills). I wouldn’t trust her either because she’s sort of a skitch, which is a new fangled term (to me) that I learned from the show ‘Awkward.’

Stefan comes back to Sad Klaus who has lost his entire hybrid army either to bleeding out or having to be killed. Klaus is mad and confused because he did everything right! He goes through his mental check-list: killed the vamp, killed the wolf, killed the doppelganger (hmm). Klaus does end up healing Stefan BTW and tells him that he is the only comrade he has left. (Well, if you stopped killing everyone, you would perhaps have more friends).

Elena and Damon then have a sexually tension filled moment in her room. Damon declares Stefan an insufferable martyr who needs his ass kicked (agreed!). But, he does think he can be brought back because he saved him. Damon then tells her that he wants her to remember the things she felt while he was gone. Oh my! Damon leaves and Alaric wanders in and says the line of the night “You know what you’re doing there.” (I’m loving it).

We end with the Widow Lockwood telling Tyler that she will protect Caroline. She calls our new friend Bill to put the brakes on the killing. He’s like uhh no and hangs up. We flash to Caroline who is locked up in some dark cell somewhere and is calling for help. We hear noise, and then Bill walks in. Caroline looks up and says, “Daddy?” AHHH!!

Like I said earlier, I’m not really into this whole Hybrid army storyline, it’s just not my bag. And I’m sort of wondering where we’re going to go with it now that Klaus can’t actually make non-zombie hybrids. However, I always enjoy some Damon/Elena stuff. And I sort of love Alaric. I’m also really interested to see where we go with this whole vamp ghost thing. I’m imagining there’s going to be a brawl between Jeremy and Matt about bringing Vicki back. These two numbnuts may want to get someone else involved. But, I loved the Tyler scenes, like loved. And the ending? Awesome, for serious. I did not see that coming. I think I always assumed that Mama Sheriff produced Caroline by herself. I realize that doesn’t make sense, but I just never pictured her with someone. But, nope, Caroline has a dad, and he wants to kill her. Ridiculous! And Caroline now wins for ‘Most Daddy Issues in Mystic Falls.’

The Vampire Diaries airs Thursday nights at 8 PM on the CW.
