REVIEW: The Vampire Diaries “The Last Day”
April 29th, 2011 by thetvchick
Oh my goodness!! For realz! Loved it. “The Last Day” was yet another awesome episode of The Vampire Diaries that made me cry a few of my own tears (I’m saving the rest for the moments of Season two that are left).
We begin the episode in a good way in my opinion: with a tortured Damon in bed. Out in the living room, Elijah is filling Stefan in on the spell and Klaus’s deal and reminding peeps that it’s a full moon tonight. Damon comes out and tells them (Elena, Stefan, and Elijah) that he thinks that they should just kill Klaus ahead of time. Elijah gives him the slow your roll look and continues to explain the ritual (gotta kill a vamp and a wolf, need a witch, and Klaus has to completely drink the doppelganger). However! Elijah has a magic elixir that he originally got for Katherine when we tried this the first time, that should save Elena. She’d need to drink it and then would presumably wake up after being dead. Bickering ensues over whether this will work.
Over at the Widow Lockwood’s, she’s giving a call to Tyler to come home because she’s had an accident. She gets off the phone confused and we see that Maddox put a spell on her to do this; he then pushes her down the stairs, you know, because we needed an accident.
Back at the Safe House, Stefan and Damon are arguing re: Elena making it out of this alive. In the other room, Elijah and Elena are discussing how the elixir may not work, which Elena understands and is okay with. Yay, Alaric is back and is alive and stuff and not a vampire! He has a message from Klaus that the ritual is going down tonight. Well, that doesn’t give us much time.
Over at the Mystic Falls Blood Restaurant (I mean the Hospital), Tyler is looking after his mom. I felt happy in my happy place to see Tyler back.
Moving over to Matt and Caroline (man, we got a lot going on here), they’re doing the “see you later” thing. Matt then sneaks over to Mama Sheriff. He confesses that this is really hard for him and that he sort of thinks she’s still maybe a good person, or a good something. Mama Sheriff knows that no good can come of this, but it’s hard for her to pull the trigger because she still sees her daughter. It’s sad, man.
Back at the Safe House, Jenna has joined the Scooby gang. Nice. Damon and Elena are in the other room, and he’s really upset about this potential death situation. She takes his hands in hers, ahh!!! There’s some feeling talkin’ going on. He then force feeds her blood! Madness! It’s the only way he knows to ensure that she’ll wake up after the ritual. Stefan comes in and freaks the heck out. A fight ensues between the brothers, and Damon stabs Stefan. There’s a whole lot of ridiculousness going on. Jenna is way confused. Elijah packs up the elixir and tells Damon that we won’t be need that now, ha. Elijah tells Damon that he doesn’t get it and that Elena will have centuries to resent him. I really love Elijah, he’s so wise. Meanwhile, Alaric and Jenna are discussing the craziness and they’re on good terms. Nice. Also, Elena is really upset, and Stefan wants to take a day trip.
Anyway, Tyler is leaving the hospital and runs into Caroline. Also, stupid Jules followed him there. There’s some high tension between Caroline and Tyler. He’s leaving right now, and she’s annoyed man. Jules gives them some time to talk. But, trouble arises fast! Maddox comes and works his headache magic and then hauls off Tyler and Caroline. Bummer. Greta is there, also. Matt tries to call Caroline and she’s umm, unavailable.
Over at the Mystic Grill, Alaric and Damon are talking about the trouble Damon caused. Klaus comes in, uh oh. Damon wants a postponement, Klaus looks at him like he’s crazy. When he walks out, Damon and Alaric decide that they’re going to have a secret plan to avoid this ritual. This may be bad news.
Elena and Stefan are on their day trip to what looks like THE Mystic Falls. I don’t know for sure, but there are waterfalls. He’s trying to find out how she’s feeling about becoming a vamp. She can’t talk about it right now. They’re going to hike the falls for legit with no vampire cheating because it’s her last day as a human, sniff sniff.
Klaus is still camping out at Alaric’s, which is where Katherine is searching for blood. Alaric stops by so that he can invite Damon in; he then peaces out (Klaus is still out running some last minute errands. I’m going to assume he’s at Target in the Rituals section). Katherine does inform Damon that Klaus has Tyler and Caroline; he then tells her about Elena drinking his blood (dumb move, am I right?). She tells him where they are, and he’s off! They’re in one of the many tombs in town, by the by. We flash to them doing some chatting down there.
Back at the falls, Elena and Stefan are discussing the pros and cons of being a vamp. The pros are obvious. The cons are the heightened feelings on things like grief, anger, sadness, etc. That’s why so many vamps turn their emotions off.
Okay, so Klaus comes back to his temporary pad and thinks something is up. He tests Katherine by removing her sunlight bracelet and making her stand in the sun (to make sure that she can still be compelled). She does it even though she is working from her own free will because she doesn’t want him to know about the vervain in her system.
So, Damon gets to the tomb and Maddox is there being all guard dog like. A little fighting ensues and then Maddox gets shot! At first, I was assuming it was Alaric, but it’s not! It’s Matt!!!! Loving this to epic proportions people. I have a huge soft spot for Matt and I like that he’s in the mix. In my notes, I literally wrote OH SNAP! Damon then knocks him out because he’s Damon. In the tomb, Caroline is filling Tyler in on the deets of the situation. She wants to know why he left; he thought that she hated him and he thinks she deserves better. Damon then comes in to rescue Caroline but ends up unleashing Tyler (pun intended) as well. She sees Matt outside with the wooden bullets, and she’s confused because she was operating under the assumption that he was still in the dark. Damon tells her that is tomorrow’s problem and I LOL’d.
Back to the falls we go! Elena and Stefan get to the heart of the matter. She wasn’t supposed to decide this right now. She says she’s supposed to grow up, decide if she wants a family, etc. He tells her to say it. And she confesses that she doesn’t want to be a vampire. (Boo ya Bella Swan, this is why Elena Gilbert is 8 million times more awesome than you). They then go back to the Safe House where Klaus appears. There is then a really sad goodbye between Elena and Stefan with some kissing and tears and heartache. She tells him to close his eyes, and then she’s gone. (For you Buffy fans, it reminds me of the season two finale when Buffy has to send Angel to Hell right when he gets his soul back and she has him close his eyes). Anyway, TEARS!
So, Tyler, Damon, Caroline, and Matt are running through the woods when Tyler begins to turn (man, we can’t catch a break today!). He is turning really fast. Damon and Stefan talk on the phone and Damon tells Stefan that he has the vamp and werewolf. Unfortunately, Stefan has to tell Damon that Elena is already gone. Damon says he’ll take care of it. Loving this. Damon then rumbles with Tyler and has Matt and Caroline run to lock themselves up away from Tyler. They run and get locked up, but Tyler lunges for the cage. It looks like a bad scene, but I couldn’t tell you what exactly happened (I think that was the point).
Damon then ends up at Klaus’s temporary pad and tells him to cool it for now because his witch is dead and the other peeps are released. Klaus gives him the you must be kidding look again and is like look rookie, I’ve been trying to get this business done for 1000 years; I have a back-up plan. He shows him a video of a locked up Jules (our werewolf). We already know about Greta of course. And now for our vampire…
Damon is then with Katherine and she says that she called someone to lure them out to be the vampire in the spell, and I’m all like, called WHO?!?!
We flash to Greta bringing Elena into the woods. Elena comments that her family was looking for her, and Greta is like, well I wasn’t lost. And then I have another sad moment, because Docta M and Luka died for nothing. And they were sort of bad, but I’ll give them a small pass because he thought he was trying to save his daughter. Anyway, they get to where they’re going and Elena sees Jenna lying on the ground. She thinks she’s dead, but she’s actually in turning into a vampire transition! Mind blown. I didn’t think they’d go there. (This is who Katherine had to lure out).
Back to Katherine and Damon, Damon wonders why Klaus didn’t just use him. Katherine points to his arm. Deadly werewolf bite spreading. BAM!!!
Head exploding! Awesomeness. Love it. It gets an A for sure. So much action all packed into one episode. On this show, the only characters I think are safe are Damon, Elena, and Stefan (so yeah, I’m sure we’ll figure out a cure to this bite thing, but still, sadness). However, that leaves a lot of characters in danger. The writers have shown that pretty much no one is safe. I don’t know if Jenna will make it out of this, I sort of hope she does, I think. Who knows right now about Caroline and Matt?! So much to process, for real. I can’t wait to see where they take us with this next episode, it’s going to be nuts for sure. Also, should someone give Bonnie and Jeremy a call to let her know we need her like immediately?
The Vampire Diaries airs Thursday nights at 8 pm on the CW.

I screamed “BOONE!” when we were shown Damon’s werewolf bite…poor Ian…I hope he makes it through…I can’t take another untimely death of Ian Somerhalder.
Loved this episode so much and cannot wait for next week.

“Mystic Falls Blood Restaurant” now that’s funny!
Loved all the twists & turns of The Last Day: Damon (Oh no you didn’t!?) Force-feed Elena your blood…oh yes ya did
Cue Angry Stefan “how could you of all people take that choice away from her?!” he does have a point… Klaus is one BAMF & Aunt Jenna a vamp say what?! I fear I shall be mourning her soon…
As usual we ended on a slow not *sarcasm* Damon literally being bit in the arse(arm) for his comment to Tyler “don’t make regret this” cue Holy Werewolf Bite Batman!
Nicely done TVD writers, nicely done. I can’t wait to be horrified/amazed/traumatized next week.
