REVIEW: The Vampire Diaries “1912″
March 16th, 2012 by E. Reagan
E back again for some more TVD – this time with “1912.” I was worried as I had been once before that this was going to be a “swim team” (See: http://thetvchick.com/flashback-fridays/flashback-friday-boy-meets-world-week-7/) episode, but once again I was pleasantly surprised. Not my favorite episode, but some interesting plot development…if you know what I mean, and I think you do.
We begin with a flashback (FB) to 1912 of course with a Mr. (Zachariah) Salvatore talking to a one Sheriff Forbes. (Man, it’s hard to leave this town and your assumed family roles, huh?) They’re talking about some murderer on the loose and the Sheriff tells our Salvatore friend to be careful and what not. Obviously, he gets stabbed super fast…and dies.
OK, flash forward. Alaric wakes up in a cell. Mama Sheriff and Damon come…it looks like Dr. Fell is framing him. Alaric is super bummed, and Damon is also because they’re buds.
On the other side of town (well, I guess I don’t know that it’s the other side, but you know, whatever), Elena and Matt are going jogging. Matt fills her in on the Bonnie scoop; Abby is planning on transitioning. (This convo sort of cracks me up. While I know they think it’s serious, they’re talking like she decided to pick up a second job or something). Elena then gets a call from Mama Sheriff about Alaric because she’s sort of his guardian, wait, that’s not right…but it doesn’t sound correct the other way either. On her way into the police station, Elena runs into Damon and some pissy banter ensues.
Damon heads home to find Stefan doing some brooding as he kicks his human blood habit. And Damon is all, we never hang out, we’re always teaming up, joining forces, using our wonder twin powers, ha. Damon wants to be buddies since his current friend is in jail. Also, he totally loves his brother. Anyway, he wants to discuss the Mystic Falls serial killer from 1912 and compare and contrast to modern day. We FB to a funeral for “Uncle Zach” that Stefan comes into town for. He’s chatting with a Lockwood lady and a Gilbert lady. Then Damon comes on the scene. They haven’t talked in 50 years. Damon is still super mad that Stefan made him be a vamp. Stefan wants to catch-up.
Back in modern day, Rebekah is being a lady that lunches at the Grill with the Widow Lockwood because she’s trying to get the scoop on the whereabouts of the Original killing tree. The Widow doesn’t know much, but she does know that the Salvatore family ran the place that kept track of the town records or something. Damon and Stefan then walk into the Grill discussing what the deaths all had in common…all members of the Council.
Over at the town jail, Alaric is having trouble coming up with an alibi for Mama. He seems super confused and it’s sort of upsetting.
Back to the boys. They’re discussing this vamp Sage that was in town when they were in 1912 (she was boxing human men for fun and money).
Elena then goes to confront Dr. Fell for being a B. Dr. Fell is like, do you even really know him? He was arressted for fighting and Isobel had two restraining orders put on him before they were married. (This made me say yikes in my yikes place. Alaric is supposed to be a protective drunk, not like the star of “Mother, May I Sleep with Danger.” Elena and Matt then go to Dr. Fell’s place because they know she’s at the hospital to dig for skeletons in the closet – they find the info that Alaric had found as well as a Gilbert journal. They also find an updated autopsy report for Brian that proves Alaric was not there because of the time of death. Unfortunately, Dr. Fell finds them. Busted.
OK, back to the Grill. At this point, Rebekah has joined the boys (she also knew Sage). And Damon talks about how Stefan was super self-righteous. He then reads from Stefan’s diary. The entry talks about how Stefan feels sorry for how bitter Damon is. We FB to Damon eating a lady all business-like. Sage catches him and is like, enjoy your lady eating…this is the life, seduce your ladies. She’s sort of the opposite of Lexi. In current day, we learn from Rebekah that Sage had a thing for Finn waaaay back in the day. Seems like a super weird match to me. Also, Stefan is still super jumpy without his meth…I mean blood fix.
So, Matt and Elena are at the police station. Mama Sheriff is mad fo’ sho’. But, she lets them go. Also, Alaric is being let go because Dr. Fell already turned in the updated autopsy report hours ago.
Meanwhile, Damon peer pressures Stefan into drinking some blood so he can learn to control the blood and not have the blood control him. Of course he’s ridiculous, and really goes whole hog while almost sucking this woman dry. Damon pulls her away and heals her with his blood. The bad news is that Elena and Matt catch this whole thing on their way home. I seriously laughed out loud when Stefan tried to wipe the blood off of his mouth, but just made it worse and smeared it all over. Matt’s like, let’s just peace out.
Back at the Gilbert Residence, Matt and Elena are talking about the ridiculousness that is Elena’s life. Matt is like, what is your deal with Stefan? Apparently, his appeal is that he won’t die…like her parents did. (Hope the Gilberts left enough money for Elena because there is going to be a hefty therapy bill coming her way). And her deal with Damon is that he just sort of snuck up on her. Matt is like, I get it. When you fall in love with someone, you can’t shake them. (Dramatic looking at each other scene). Turns out Matt grabbed the Gilbert journal. He was able to because he’s practically invisible — his words. Elena ignores his drama queen moment. Also, Alaric’s home! Elena and him hug it out.
Over at the SHBP, Stefan is brooding at the fireplace. Damon comes over and is like you did a good job. Stefan is wondering why he’s being all friendly and caring. Turns out, Damon feels guilty for driving Stefan back over at the edge in 1912. He didn’t want to help him then, but he wants to now because Stefan is all he’s got. Light to Moderate TEARS. FB: Damon convinces Stefan to drink some human blood. Stefan of course gets way to into it and ‘rips’ this woman’s head off. He then snaps back into reality and is all apologizing to the corpse. Creepy City and Stefan is Mayor McCheese.
Elena is reading the journal Matt snagged; it’s from Jonathan Gilbert’s granddaughter. It talks about how she feels like she’s going mad and losing clips of time. Alaric also tells her that he sucks as a guardian. There’s a knock at the door. He answers and it’s Dr. Fell. She explains that Alaric’s magic ring is making him a crazy murderer who doesn’t know he’s a crazy murderer. She wants to help him. Elena comes into the room and thinks she’s right because of what happened to her ancestor. (We see the FB of the lady Gilbert killing Zachariah back in 1912). Boom.
Man, what a bummer, huh? I love that crazy drunk. I don’t want him to be a murderer. I have no idea how we’re going to make this situation right. Poor Alaric. Also, is Matt trying to edge in on this Elena situation? I’m loving this new dynamic between Damon and Stefan. All in all, pretty good episode. Not my fave, but a good twist at the end.
The Vampire Diaries airs Thursday nights at 8 PM on the CW.
