E back again for another lovely TVD episode, “Dangerous Liaisons.” (Which Rachael Green claims is her favorite movie, but it’s actually Weekend at Bernie’s…Friends anyone?). Anyway, solid episode with some more info about the Originals.

We begin with Matt and Elena leaving the hospital. Alaric is there for observation. Also, Bonnie and negligent mother are both fine. Caroline is sad, but okay. There are still no suspects for this attempting to murder/murdering peeps situation. Matt and Elena part ways to go home, and Elena bumps into someone with her car. She gets out, and it’s just Rebekah threatening her with death. Luckily, Elijah is there and is awesome and stops her. Mama Original will not stand for any murders on her watch. Elijah then tells Elena that they have some catching up to do.

Back at the Gilbert Residence, Elena tells the boys what she learned from Elijah, specifically that Mama Original is alive and stuff. While they’re hangin’, she gets an invitation to a ball hosted by the Originals (The Mikaelson Family, Mikael Mikaelson? I’m sure that’s not his name, they probably just took Mikael and added a ‘son’. I’m sure there were no last names at that point). There’s also a personal note from Mama Original on the back about how she wants to meet Elena.

Over at Klaus’s place (man alive, when you compel people, you can apparently get some construction done fast), all the siblings are bickering. Esther is like get it together losers.

Back to the boys and Elena, who are also bickering. Elena wants to find out what the deal with Esther is, and Damon is super concerned about her getting harmed. Stefan is like uhh, whatevs to that. Let’s find out the deal. (But we know Stefan loves Elena! It’s just deep down in his secret place right now).

Over at Caroline’s, she’s listening to a voice mail from Tyler. He’s trying to get his junk together so he can come back to her. Also, he’s really sorry about her dad. She also finds an invite to the Mikaelson’s par-tay. This one comes with a personal note from Klaus and a beautiful dress (how many ballgowns do these Mystic Falls girls own for crying out loud?!).

Over at the Grill, Caroline and Elena are discussing Elena’s and Damon’s kiss. Caroline is super hurt that she heard about it from Bonnie. And Elena is like, dude, your dad, and Caroline is like, whatever. (Weirdo). They also eye Rebekah giving Matt an invite to the ball. (Geez, poor Matt. He always gets in the middle of the mystical brouhaha).

Okay, we’re at the ball now. Damon chats with the Widow Lockwood. She is so damn uppity and bougie, ugg. They chat about how she’s trying to make nice with these fancy new monsters in town. Kol comes over; Damon’s like, hey, I think I know you. And Kol is snippy, and is like, I don’t remember you. (Kol sort of sucks FYI. He is my least favorite (alive-ish) original. I will put them in order for you right now Elijah>Rebekah>Klaus>Mama>Finn>Kol. You’re welcome).

Elena comes in and looks fantastic. (Nina Dobrev is seriously so gorgeous, like ridiculously so). The boys want that girl so bad. And they each escort her in, one on each arm (Brother Husbands?). Caroline is running fashionably late because she’s still trying to choose what to wear. She finally sighs and puts on the dress from Klaus. She gets there, and Klaus looks over. My notes read: Klaus wants to hit that. Finn chats with Elena and tells her she must be alone to see his mama.

Then there is a waltz! And I love this scene times 1 million. There’s some partner switching. (Caroline with Klaus, then with Matt who was originally dancing with Rebekah; Elena with Damon and then with Stefan; Rebekah with Damon). The sexual tension in most of these pairings is ridiculous. My favorite was actually Elena and Stefan. I apparently want these two back together; I guess I have to give back my Team Damon t-shirt).

Elena ends up taking Stefan outside to tell him that she needs his help to distract Damon so she can go talk to Esther. She’s all like, because you want to destroy Klaus more than you love me. And he’s like, uhhh, right! (He is lying to his heart!!!). So Stefan takes Damon down so she can take care of bidness.

Meanwhile, Rebekah is telling Kol that she would like his assistance in killing Matt (to hurt Elena). Kol loves to break mama’s rules, so he’s in. (Ugg, he sucks). Elijah tells Elena to report back what she hears.

Okay, so Elena is with Esther now. And Finn leaves the room. She’s burning some sage so that no one can eavesdrop. Turns out, Ayana (who Bonnie and Abby are descended from) preserved Esther. That’s why we needed them to open the coffin back up. Her punishment for making monsters was 1000 years wherever doing whatever I guess? She needs to undo what she did and needs Elena’s help.

Caroline and Klaus are hanging out with horses. He fancies her; she’s super fresh with him. [Ed. Note: Love this pairing, or at least the possibility. A lot.]

Okay, so Esther needs a drop of Elena’s blood for a ritual that will be performed tonight (it will go in champagne for when the toast is made). This will bind them all. If one dies, they all die.

Back to this killing Matt sub-plot. Kol wants to do it right there; Rebekah is like, don’t be stupid. She takes Matt outside where he says it’s cold. He gets his jacket from his truck (which totally gives Rebekah the sads). He then gives her his jacket. She’s like, I’m a vampire, I don’t get cold. But, it’s freakin’ adorbale, and all you Matt haters are not invited to my cool people party. Anyway, she has a change of heart and calls of the killin’.

Damon wakes up; Stefan tells him to stop being a controlling dick. And Elena lies to Elijah; she says that Esther just wanted to apologize.

Then there’s the toast! I noticed carefully that they all drank. I was hoping Elijah just pretended to, but no luck. Klaus then shows Caroline his paintings and some drawings he did. She’s like I’ve never been anywhere or seen anything. He offers to show her the world (I can show you the world, shining, shimmering, spleeeenndid). She doesn’t like how he’s always compelling and being an ass. She thinks he has daddy issues and compels because he doesn’t think people will just love him. And then she storms out. Love me some Caroline!

Kol gets all crappy with Rebekah because she let Matt live and tells her to stop being so predictable. (She just wants someone to be nice to her. I also love me some Rebekah).

Then things get real. Damon tells Elena he’s mad at her (for what she just did) because he loves her. She doesn’t really respond in the affirmative. He realizes that he’s a liability because he cares too much.

Kol then introduces himself to Matt and breaks his hand. Damon steps in and pushes Kol off the balcony and then breaks his neck. (This is how I like my Damon). People are looking on like what, what?

Caroline goes home and leaves a message for Tyler about how she misses him. She then finds a jewelery box on her bed. However, inside is a drawing of her and a horse with a note that says ‘Thanks for your honesty.’ (Stop making me feel tender towards Klaus writers!).

Elijah is with his Mama and they’re talking about that pain in the ass Kol. He’s like, I’ll deal with this. He leaves, Finn comes. Mama Original feels bad for what’s she’s about to do because Elijah is just so moral. She then cuts Finn (who is in on this because he’s had his fill of immortality). His blood spills on this paper with all their names on it. It make sort of a tree shape as it goes from name to name and then goes up in flames).

Back at the Gilbert Residence, Elena says she feels bad for what she did. Stefan is like too bad for them, but they ruined your life a lot. She then says she feels bad about something she didn’t mean to say that she said to Damon. Stefan alludes to the fact that he also said something he didn’t mean this evening. She wants him to kiss her so bad. But he doesn’t and won’t admit his feelings because then he’d feel pain.

We end with Rebekah trying to apologize to Matt at the Grill (who just found out he doesn’t have health insurance. Seriously, can I hug him?) He tells her to leave him alone. Damon then comes and flirts with Rebekah; they then go back this place and have some hot vampire sex. The End!

Seriously, this show gets better and better every week. Loved the stuff with Mama Original. Super interested in Finn’s martyrdom. Loved Klaus and Caroline. Excited in my happy space about all the Stefan/Elena stuff. So much good stuff. I can’t wait to see what the deal is now with Rebekah and Damon. I’m also looking forward to Tyler’s return to town and how he’ll deal with seeing Klaus and Caroline maybe together-ish. And obviously I’m interested to see how this all goes down with the originals.

The Vampire Diaries airs on Thursday nights at 8 PM on the CW.
