VIDEO INTERVIEW: James Purefoy (Joe Carroll) from The Following

January 21st, 2013

james-purefoy

I have been waiting for The Following to premiere since I saw the pilot back in the fall, because it is just brilliant. Kevin Williamson has created a show that takes us into the psyche of a serial killer mastermind. Enter Ryan Hardy, former FBI Agent (played by Kevin Bacon) who caught this serial killer (Joe Carroll, played by James Purefoy) years ago. Oh, and Hardy also slept with Carroll’s wife and had to get a pacemaker because he almost died while catching Carroll, but I digress. Carroll isn’t your typical serial killer. He’s a former professor, who’s enamored with Edgar Allan Poe and his ideas and writing on death. While in prison, Carroll becomes the leader of a cult (or following), all of whom are equally enamored with him and Poe. Carroll and his following will stop at nothing to kill and carry out some tangled, twisted web of a plan. Over the summer, I got a chance to talk to the cast of The Following at Comic Con. James Purefoy had a lot to say about getting into the mind of a serial killer, television’s new obsession with serial killers and much more. The first question asked (which is not heard in the video) is about if he has read a lot of Poe.

INTERVIEW: Kevin Bacon (Ryan Hardy) from The Following

January 21st, 2013

Kevin Bacon

If you choose to watch one new network drama this season, let it be The Following. I know, I know, you have piles of shows building up on your DVR that you haven’t gotten around to, but trust me on this one. The Following is clever, intelligent, twisted, creepy and quite brilliant. Kevin Bacon stars as Ryan Hardy, a former FBI agent with a pretty crazy history. He caught Joe Carroll, a professor/serial killer/Edgar Allan Poe worshipper and put him behind bars. But years later, Carroll is thrust back into the picture because he has created a cult (or a following) based on his vendetta/beliefs/you name it. I recently had the chance to talk to Kevin Bacon at Comic Con in San Diego, where I proudly achieved 0 degrees of Kevin Bacon. He talked about what attracted him to television, playing a flawed hero and much more.

Q&A: Mindy Kaling (Creator/Mindy Lahiri) from The Mindy Project

October 30th, 2012

The Mindy Project is one of my favorite new comedies and it has remained consistently hilarious since the pilot. What I love most about the show is the voice. It is truly unique and real, which is not commonplace on comedies these days. Tonight’s episode (which was supposed to air last week but got preempted) is the Halloween episode, and Mindy is going on a Halloween date. I recently had the chance to talk to Mindy Kaling (who plays the protagonist Mindy Lahiri) on a media call, and she talked about the voice of the character, avoiding stereotypes and possibly bringing some of her former Office cast-mates onto the show.

VIDEO INTERVIEW: Josh Jackson (Peter Bishop) from Fringe

October 19th, 2012

FRINGE-Comp-Prints-11

While a majority of the Fringe cast took to their Comic Con panel teary-eyed and emotional, Josh Jackson managed to keep it together and keep up a humorous spirit. But just because Jackson was the only one to keep his eyes dry didn’t mean that it was easy to see how grateful he was to reflect on his time spent with the show – and what it meant to him that Fringe got the closure it so deserved.

“Most TV shows end in bloody awful ways, and that sucks,” says Jackson. “So for us to have the opportunity…knowing that we’re going into it that it’s the last season, to know we have 13 episodes to go out and tell a really concise story…it challenges everyone in the right way. I’m happily challenged by it and excited by it.”

Watch the video below to hear more from Jackson, including why he loves Comic Con so much – and what he hopes to see for Peter and Olivia as the series comes to a close.

INTERVIEW: John Noble (Dr. Walter Bishop) from Fringe

October 5th, 2012

john_noble

Just a few months ago, fans waited with baited breath while networks rolled out their new fall schedules, praying that they would see their favorite show score a deserving final season. But for John Noble, there was never any question that the show wouldn’t be renewed.

“I was always optimistic that we would be coming back,” the star shared at Comic Con this summer. “I couldn’t believe that they wouldn’t finish the story. The ending of season four was lovely, but it wasn’t the ending of Fringe.”

From saying goodbye to his alternate universe character “Walternate” to re-connecting with Peter in the newest rebooted timeline, Noble certainly outdid himself last season in terms of fantastic work. Click the video below to hear more, including hints on if he’ll return to TV and what he expects as the series approaches its finale.

INTERVIEW: Jasika Nicole (Astrid) from Fringe

September 28th, 2012

jasika

It was a pretty good year for Fringe’s Jasika Nicole – not only did her character get her hands dirty out in the field, but Astrid Farnsworth finally received her very own episode, an hour that was both long overdue and well-deserved.

When we pick up with the season five premiere, we’ll be transported back to the world as it exists in 2036, where Astrid and Walter were trapped in amber for a number of years before being rescued by Etta and Simon.

“She is the same Astrid that we know…she’s just been frozen in time. So she’s in a completely different environment,” Nicole shares when asked what Astrid will be like in this new Observer-filled world. Want to hear more? Watch the video from Comic Con below, where Nicole talks more about what she thinks Astrid will experience this season, and what some of her favorite moments have been over the past five years.

INTERVIEW: Anna Torv (Olivia) from Fringe

September 28th, 2012

Anna

This week, the little “science fiction show that could” begins its final 13-episode run – and make no mistake, the cast isn’t ready to say good-bye anymore than the fans are, particularly fan favorite Anna Torv. Torv, who has played a total of no less than eight characters throughout the run of the series says the character of Bolivia is the one she’ll miss the most. “That was hard and sad,” she shares. I loved the alternate universe and I loved Bolivia…we’ve said goodbye and I’m hoping she may pop back in some capacity.”

Watch the video for more with Anna from Comic Con about what she’s looking forward to this season, what her feelings are about leaving her alternate self with Lincoln (clue: she’s happy!) and what she thought when she first read the season four finale.

ADVANCE REVIEW: Season 2 Premiere of New Girl “Re-Launch” and “Katie” & Zooey Deschanel Previews The 2nd Season

September 25th, 2012

new girl

New Girl is back and all is right in my TV world! There are two new episodes on FOX tonight — one at 8 and one at 9, in its usual time-slot. “Re-Launch” is all about Schmidt’s self-planned re-branding party because his penis is no longer broken. Yeah, seriously. He also definitely shows us what his penis cast looks like and it is not pretty. But not all is right in the loft. Schmidt invites Cece to his re-launch, clearly not over her. But she has this normal boyfriend, who Schmidt deems unworthy of Cece (and lesser than him obviously). And Jess gets laid off from her job and is left with no direction in her life. She becomes a shot girl at Schmidt’s party and let’s just say it doesn’t go as planned. The season premiere had me laughing for the first eight minutes straight, proving there is certainly no sophomore slump for this show.

In the second episode of the night, Jess pretends she is Katie, when new guy Sam (played by the super funny and charming David Walton) comes to the bar looking for his date he set up online. Hilarity ensues when she has to tell Nick, Schmidt and Winston to call her by a different name. To add to Jess’ romantic drama, she had asked Nick to set her up with a guy who works at the bar. Nick thinks Jess was referring to this guy who goes by the name of Bear Claw (played by Josh Gad), and they have a pretty ridiculous first date. Meanwhile, Schmidt tries to seduce Winston’s sister who plays for the WNBA. We find out why Winston’s family hates Schmidt, and there a one-on-one laugh so hard you will cry scene. But I haven’t even gotten to the best part yet. We are introduced to “Old Nick,” who claims to have come from the future. He gives Nick cryptic advice about his life and the whole thing is completely hilarious.

It is an understatement to say I am excited about New Girl’s return. I love seeing Nick and Jess get closer in a fairly platonic way (even though, yes I ‘ship this) and I am interested to see how Jess is going to deal with everything. I recently had the chance to participate in a media Q&A with Zooey Deschanel, and here is what she had to tease about the new season.

On Jess’ unemployment: “You know she’s been looking for a job for a little while and so they’re throwing out different jobs. It definitely affects her life pretty deeply because this is something she’s wanted to do her entire life and considered teaching to be her calling. So, it definitely is a blow to her. But, I like how Jess is sort of open to new things and although she’s upset about it, she throws herself into to trying to find a new job and is pretty positive about things, which is a quality I like in the character.”

On Nick and Jess getting together: “There’s no danger of that happening. They’re not getting together anytime soon. I think that they’re not ready for each other and nobody is going to push them together. So, I think Nick and Jess have a great chemistry and I work really well with Jake Johnson. I think it’s nice the sort of love-hate-but love relationship they have. They’re not going to throw them together or anything soon. They might tease it out.”

Be sure to tune in tonight at 8 PM and 9 PM for a double dose of New Girl on FOX.
