My love/hate relationship with Glee reached a fairly high level of dislike last season (save a few phenomenal episodes), so I really wasn’t sure how I would like the season four premiere. It’s going to be a “show within a show” this season with some characters in NYC, others at McKinley and some who aren’t even mentioned at all. I have to say, “The New Rachel” felt like an old-school Glee episode, one that would have led me to fall in love with the show. Was it perfect? No. Was it great? Absolutely. We pick up in the fall, after graduation. Rachel is in NYC at NYADA (lots of abbreviations for you there), and she has to deal with being at the bottom of the barrel. It doesn’t help that her dance teacher (played by Kate Hudson) has it out for her and dubs her the female David Schwimmer. But there is one bright spot to her rough days, and that’s new resident heartthrob Brody (played by Dean Geyer). Back at McKinley, the New Directions are holding auditions, while most of the returning members are competing to be ‘the new Rachel.’ “Unique” is a new addition to the Glee club, but the McKinley kids aren’t as accepting of his alternate persona as they should be. The real highlight of the entire episode for me was new girl Marley (played by the lovely Melissa Benoist). If anyone is going to have the new Rachel title, it will most certainly be her.

So I didn’t review last week’s Michael Jackson-themed Glee episode because I was dealing with family issues. However, I considered it and realized I really didn’t like it and had nothing to say. I thought the music bored me (I like Michael, but I guess I’m just not that into him?) and there was no plot because it was a tribute episode. So I hoped that this week’s episode would be better. I have to say, I was disappointed. I knew the songs ahead of time and wasn’t a big fan but I found myself totally bored by this music. Ricky Martin is fine and all, but I’m not super enamored with him. I did however, like some of the plot. Sue wants to try and have a baby, Will is kind of a jerk and Emma is awesome and Kurt and Finn have a sweet heart to heart. But those were the highlights for me. I generally can’t wait to download songs the next day but I won’t have any of the songs from “The Spanish Teacher” on my iPod. Step it up, Glee. I have high hopes for the Valentine’s Day episode. Don’t mess it up!

Because of the whole SOPA thing going on (which I agree with by the way), I wasn’t sure I’d be able to write this review. I tried last night to take notes but WordPress wasn’t having it. Anyway, last night’s Glee was actually quite enjoyable. I was reading a lot of dislike for it but I thought it had some pretty good music choices (hello, Lea Michele ballads are back!), plot (numerous proposals and one couple eloped) and a Maggie Smith bit that was hilarious.

Last night’s episode of Glee “Extraordinary Merry Christmas” was basically a concert performance of a Christmas CD. There was also a super bizarre Christmas special for the local Lima PBS station. It was cute and involved a lot of singing but I was confused as to whether it was supposed to be some sort of homage to the 50s or just some weird joke thing. Who knows? The songs were pretty entertaining, but a big part of the show was Rachel wanting Christmas presents and she’s Jewish. So that was weird. The entire episode was pretty much all music, though. So for the most part, I liked it just fine.

I am happy to say that last night’s Glee was leagues better than last week. Competition weeks are generally my favorite because we get to see a lot of great performances. But this episode had some nice plot development too. I wasn’t crazy about all the song choices — there were some weird choices for a competition — but there were still some iPod worthy songs in there. I loved the Quinn developments (she needed some redemption), the compromise that New Directions and the Trouble Tones come to and the hilarious Sebastian and Santana moments. And Sam came back! Which I’m oddly kind of excited for and I’m not sure why.

Last night’s episode of Glee titled “I Kissed A Girl” centered around Santana and the campaign video that was about to out her. There’s also the matter of the elections — both for Class President and a Congressional seat. It was a decent episode with a few catchy musical numbers, but overall it felt like a filler episode. Don’t get me wrong, I thought the Santana scenes were moving and fantastic (even if in a slightly emotionally manipulative way). I even liked Finn in this episode for trying to raise Santana’s spirits and make her realize she has a ton of support from those who love her. It just felt like there was a ton of music and very little plot. But I won’t give up Glee. I know a lot of people who have, but I have always said that the music makes me happy and this season has really been pretty great in the plot department.

I want to believe Glee is back to its old season one self, but I’m not all the way convinced yet. “Mash Off” was a pretty decent episode, but it was decent because some of the musical numbers (mainly one) gave me chills. And that knocked it up in the rankings. But was it anywhere near “Asian F” or “The First Time”? Not really, sadly. The episode focuses on a Glee assignment (and one of my favorites) — mash-ups. But because the groups are split (The Troubletones are great and all but can we please just all get along?!), they are going to have a Mash Off, a mash-up competition.

So, how about we just forget about last week’s episode of Glee, shall we? I had some big issues with “Pot O’ Gold” and I’m happy to say it was just one little blip in the radar of what has been a pretty great Glee season so far. “The First Time” was fantastic. The main focal point is the Glee Club putting on “West Side Story.” But Artie gets in Blaine and Rachel’s head by suggesting that they can’t truly get into the mindset of Tony and Maria if they have never had sex. As slightly ridiculous as that may sound, it drives the plot forward.

Glee was finally back last night after a few weeks off due to the World Series. And I have to say, it wasn’t as triumphant of a return as I had hoped for. The last few episodes (so, really, all of the episodes in season three) have been fantastic. They had a nice balance of story and music and featured some great songs. This episode was very plot-heavy, but not in the best way. There was some good music, and I did enjoy the new leprechaun/foreign exchange student/”Glee Project” winner Rory Flanagan (played by Damian McGinty), but his whole arc felt very forced and I wish he had gotten more of a chance to show what he’s made of. That said, there were some good moments as well. But I think I am more looking forward to next week when two of McKinley’s own are going to lose their v card.
