INTERVIEW: Vanessa Marano (Bay) and Katie LeClerc (Daphne) from Switched at Birth

January 3rd, 2012

Vanessa and Katie

Tonight is the return of another favorite ABC Family show, Switched at Birth. At first, I thought the concept was a bit overdone, but the show quickly won me over with its sweet stories and interesting integration of sign language. The Vazquez and Kennish family have been forced together due to the ‘switched’ circumstances, and I can’t wait to see how all of their relationships develop even further. The premiere tonight is great, and I am excited for everyone to see it! I recently got the chance to chat with Vanessa Marano (who plays Bay) and Katie LeClerc (who plays Daphne) about the big premiere, the love triangle their characters are in and why everyone should tune in tonight.

Switched at Birth returns to ABC Family next week and the premiere has lots of great drama. I’m excited to see what happens with Bay and Emmett’s relationship, Daphne and Bay’s relationship and how the whole “switched at birth” lawsuit plays out. I recently had the chance to catch up with veteran TV actress Lea Thompson, who plays Bay/Daphne’s mom Kathryn Kennish. We talked about the cultural importance of the show, the big premiere and what’s coming up this season.

ADVANCE REVIEW: Series Premiere of Switched At Birth

June 6th, 2011

SWITCHED AT BIRTH (ABC Family)

My love for ABC Family’s programming is just about equal to my love for CW programming. Translation: I adore it. While fall TV season may be over for a while (sad!), the summer season is just heating up. ABC Family has some great new shows, and the first to premiere is Switched At Birth. The shows stars Vanessa Marano (you may recognize her as April Nardini from Gilmore Girls) as Bay Kennish. Bay grew up in a wealthy family with a brother and two parents but always felt different from her family. Enter Daphne Vasquez (played by newcomer Katie Leclerc), who grew up in a working class neighborhood with her mother and grandmother. She contracted meningitis at a very young age and is now deaf. It turns out there was a mistake at the hospital where they were born, and they were, as the title would imply, switched at birth. Now, the two families must learn to co-habitate and figure out their respective roles in each other’s lives. I know what you are thinking: this has been done before…in movies, in TV shows, etc. And yes, it has been. But not like this.
