SAG Award Winners (Television) & My Thoughts

January 31st, 2011

sag-awards2

The SAG Awards were held last night and unlike some of the bigger awards shows, this one doesn’t have a host. I actually really liked this as well as the “I am an actor” personal testimonies from some of the actors there. The SAG awards can often be seen as a predictor of who may win the Oscars because the members of the screen actors guild vote for the Oscars as well. But it’s not just all about movies — there are a bunch of TV show categories as well, and I was excited by some of the winners. Read on for a list of winners and my thoughts!

Best TV of 2010

December 28th, 2010

Vintage_TV_by_ro_stock

As the year comes to a close, I thought it would be a nice time to highlight what I have loved on TV this year. Because this year encapsulates more than a season of TV (and because I watch a ton of TV) there’s a lot that I loved this year. There are a couple of new shows, some old favorites, and some that may not be around anymore (or may not be on for much of 2011). Feel free to weigh in with your choices, and let me know if you think I left any off my list! This list is in no particular order.

2010 FALL SEASON: What I’ll Be Watching/DVR-ing/On-Demand-ing and What To Skip

September 20th, 2010

810television

Throughout this week and next I will be posting a lot of advance reviews and fall previews. However, I realize I have not compiled a handy list for all to see. My one DVR (yes sadly, I only have one DVR) is already JAM PACKED, but I will also be relying on On Demand to watch some shows the day after. The pack of new shows is not quite as impressive as it was last season (um, hello Modern Family and Glee) but there are a few good ones that stand out. So, without further ado, here is what I am watching this fall! (And what you should probably skip out on…)

GIVEAWAY: Modern Family Season 1 DVD – CLOSED

September 16th, 2010

Last year, Modern Family quickly stood out as one of the best new comedies and had an absolutely hilarious and amazing freshman season. I am so excited to offer this amazing giveaway. I have THREE copies of the season one DVD set to giveaway so read on to see how you can enter!

THE COMPLETE, EMMY AWARD WINNING FIRST SEASON

One of the highest rated new television shows of the year, the engaging, honest and hilarious “mockumentary” view of today’s non-traditional households, “Modern Family” The Complete First Season debuts on Blu-ray and DVD September 21 from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. Come join the family for the laugh-out-loud and critically-acclaimed breakout hit of the year, featuring an all-star cast led by two-time Golden Globe nominee and recently announced recipient of his own star on the legendary Hollywood Walk of Fame Ed O’Neill (“Married…with Children”), Sofia Vargara (Four Brothers), Julie Bowen (“Boston Legal”), and Ty Burrell (Black Hawk Down). Created and produced by industry veterans Steven Levitan (“Just Shoot Me”) and Christopher Lloyd (“Frasier”), “Modern Family” takes a refreshing and funny view of what it means to raise a family in this hectic day and age. Multi-cultural relationships, adoption, and same-sex marriage are just a few of the timely issues faced by the show’s three wildly-diverse broods. No matter the size or shape, family always comes first in this hilariously “modern” look at life, love, and laughter.

Emmys 2010: List of Winners & My Thoughts on Who Got Snubbed

August 30th, 2010

The Emmys are like the Superbowl for television fans. It’s a good thing I didn’t bet on it though, because I probably would have lost. In any case, the telecast was a pretty successful one. By far, my favorite part of the night was the opening number featuring Jimmy Fallon singing along with members of the casts of Glee, Lost, The Vampire Diaries, Mad Men and 30 Rock (and even a little Betty White!)

Emmy Nominations Tomorrow: My Wish List

July 7th, 2010

Say it with me: Party Down needs to be nominated for an Emmy. Whew, glad I got that off my chest. At the very least Adam Scott and Lizzy Caplan should get a nod. I would love for the rest of the cast to get nominated as well, but I understand for it to get nominated in the first place is a far reach. Onto the more conventional: Of course I want to see Glee rake in the nominations. I would love to see either Chris Colfer or Dianna Agron get nominated for supporting roles. Lea Michele and Jane Lynch are shoe-ins at this point for actress (or supporting actress) in a comedy series. I hope to see Modern Family get a lot of accolades. I think Ty Burell has a nomination locked in, but I would absolutely love to see Julie Bowen and Eric Stonestreet get recognition as well. I’m sure it will also secure a nomination in the Best Comedy category. One of the most underrated comedies that I actually ended up loving is Cougartown. It overcame it’s ridiculous title to really come into its own. I would really like to see both Courteney Cox and the show get a nomination. Parks and Recreation had a really good sophomore season, and I’d love to see the show and Amy Poehler get a nod. I love Neil Patrick Harris and I think he’s definitely going to get a nomination but How I Met Your Mother has not been very consistent this year.

As for dramas, I anticipate seeing Juliana Margulies for The Good Wife on the ballot, as well as Kyra Sedgwick from The Closer and Edie Falco from Nurse Jackie. They are three of my favorite leading ladies and they are highly deserving of nominations. I hope that True Blood might finally get some Emmy recognition, but it may not happen. One breakout performance for me though was Ian Somerhalder from The Vampire Diaries. The Vampire Diaries is an amazing show. Anyone who hasn’t watched, I challenge you to catch up over the summer. It’s not just your average Vampire show with teens in it, it’s truly great. The WB/CW doesn’t have the best history of getting nominated for Emmys (ahem, Gilmore Girls is one of the best shows on television ever!) so I’m not holding out too much hope but one can dream, right?

I realize there are a lot that I missed, but these are just actors on my wish list. Who do you want to see nominated? Do you agree with my nomination wishes? Weigh in!

The Emmy nominations will take place live tomorrow morning starting at 5:30 AM Pacific Time.

ABC Unveils its Fall 2010 Lineup

May 18th, 2010

ABC’s official upfront presentation isn’t for a few hours, but they have released their fall schedule ahead of time. I am pleased to see a bunch of new shows. As I’ve said before, there’s a lot of buzz around No Ordinary Family, so I look forward to seeing that. I’m also excited to see Matthew Perry’s new show, Mr. Sunshine, which won’t air until mid-season. Wednesday night for ABC is still comedy night, and you can’t go wrong with the shows they have scheduled. I hope that Better Together fits right in. INTERVIEW: Sarah Hyland (Haley) from Modern Family

April 21st, 2010

Every week, Modern Family never fails to disappoint. The show centers around three families, who are all related, and their trials and tribulations that constantly result in hilarity. It stars veteran TV dad Ed O’Neill, and a wonderful cast in Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell, Sarah Hyland, Ariel Winter, Nolan Gould, Sofia Vergara, Rico Rodriguez, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, and Eric Stonestreet. It is one of those shows that is so polished, you want to watch and laugh over and over again. I recently had the chance to chat with Sarah Hyland, who plays Haley Dunphy, about her character, her TV parents and a prank Eric Stonestreet pulled on her. Believe it or not, she almost didn’t get the part of Haley because she was too old!

Congratulations on all the success of the show. It is certainly very deserving. What has awards season been like for you?
It’s been so much fun. I’ve never been on a show that’s been nominated for awards. So this is all very nice to be on something that’s being recognized for how good it is.

What drew you to the role and how did you get the part originally?
I’ve played the [character] like Haley before. The teenage girl who’s into her appearance and all of that stuff. But I got the audition and at first, the funny story about it is, at first they didn’t want to see me. And they didn’t even know what I looked like or anything like that, they just knew that I was 18 at the time. And they were like “She’s 18, she’s too old for the role.” They [gave them] my head shot and they were like trust me, she’s 18 but she doesn’t look 18. …”Oh my God, wait, never mind, we do want to see her.”

Well that’s good. Are you anything like Haley at all?
The only thing I have in common with Haley is that I constantly have my phone — either on me, or in it’s charger, 24/7. I’m into fashion but I’m mostly too lazy to dress up.

I hear you!
I’m usually too lazy to put on makeup or do my hair. Haley’s very into all of that stuff. The only really thing I have in common with her is that I do have my phone on me. We joke on set since Haley always has her phone on her on set, I always find places to hide my phone so that in between takes I can check my twitter and all that stuff.

Best TV Of The Year: 2009

December 24th, 2009

As opposed to my Best of the Decade list which contained moments and episodes from the decade, this list will be less extensive because I didn’t want to limit myself to 5 best shows of 09. Keep in mind, this is in no particular order!

1.  Parks and Recreation: I did not enjoy this show in its first season. It was always all about “the pit” and getting rid of the pit. I adore Amy Poehler, but her role seemed a bit too Michael Scott-esque to me. However, whatever happened during the off-season was fantastic. Season two has been hilarious. The pit has taken a secondary role, and each character has had a chance to develop and grow. I didn’t care for Andy in the first season, but he has become one of my favorites. I think this show deserves a ton of recognition for really stepping up its game. It is a show I look forward to every week.

2. Lost: This past season has been phenomenal. Time changing, Dharma goodness, Hurley’s hilarious questions…it’s all been great. The creators are brilliant, and I have faith that they know exactly what they are doing and that the series finale is going to blow our minds.

3. How I Met Your Mother: This year has had such great episodes as The Playbook and The Front Porch (I will never forget how hard I laughed at suitjamas). While this show can have its up and downs, every episode makes me happy. And any excuse to watch Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris) wax poetic about his “bro code” and “lemon laws” is great in my opinion.

4. The Office: Season 5 started off (in ’08) with the Jim and Pam proposal, and ended on a pregnancy. And season 6 had one of the best episodes of The Office ever with the Jim/Pam wedding. It was perfect in so many ways–hilarious but also showed us what we have been wanting for 6 years. I may have watched the boat scene upwards of 10 times. The show is at its best truly brilliant, and it has been a great season thus far. I can’t wait to see more.

5. Party Down: This show on Starz Network has garnered quite a following for itself. Created by Rob Thomas (of Veronica Mars fame) it stars many of his VM colleagues, and is truly fantastic. It is a hilarious and wonderful portrayal of a catering company in Los Angeles, and its employees who clearly want to be more than just cater waiters. It returns for a 2nd season in 2010, where Kristen Bell will be back, and Megan Mullally joins the cast. This is a show you must see! Catch up with it on DVD before season 2 begins.
