INTERVIEW: Damian Lewis (Nick Brody) from Homeland

December 4th, 2011

damian-lewis

Homeland is one of those shows that feels more like a movie than a television show. Every hour is action-packed and full of twists and turns that you never saw coming. The show centers around CIA Agent Carrie Matheson and her quest to find a prisoner of war who has been turned and is now working for terrorist king pin Abu Nazir (knowledge she obtained from someone on death row). Carrie is convinced the newly turned prisoner of war is Sergeant Nicholas Brody, who has been tortured and near death before being found by Americans. The show takes us on a journey from thinking Brody works for Nazir to thinking he is far from a terrorist. Recent developments have shown the motivations behind Brody’s decisions to work for Nazir in some form or another. Things ramp up quite a bit in tonight’s episode and I can’t even wait to see more. I recently had the chance to chat with Damian Lewis, who plays Brody, about his character, Brody’s complicated relationship with Carrie and what’s coming up.

ADVANCE REVIEW: V “Red Rain”

January 4th, 2011

vcast-1-large-sftv148

I don’t watch a ton of sci-fi shows but when V came on the scene last year, I was immediately interested because of the fantastic cast. Elizabeth Mitchell was one of my favorites on “Lost” so I was happy to see her back on TV as FBI agent Erica Evans. Morena Baccarin, a sci-fi star in her own right, is striking and very talented, so I was excited to see her play “Anna,” the leader of the Visitors (more commonly known as the Vs). And I have loved Scott Wolf since his “Party of Five” days, so having him back on TV as news reporter Chad Decker has been great. V is based on the mini-series of the same name from the early 80s and centers around a group of alien life (although they have skin and look like people) led by their Queen (Anna) who claim to be at peace…always. However, we eventually come to learn that the Vs have been on earth long before Anna arrived and have some sort of mission to accomplish that most likely involves wiping out man kind. We’re not quite sure yet. And like any dictatorship of sorts, there are rebels. Some have joined together with non Vs to form The Fifth Column. The group is currently being led by Erica Evans (the aforementioned Mitchell) whose main goal besides taking down the Vs is to protect her son Tyler (played by Logan Huffman). There were a couple of traitors on the mothership, but now only Lisa (played by the absolutely lovely and stunning Laura Vandervoort) is left, and is  trying her best to appear loyal to Anna while helping Erica and the Fifth Column. There’s a lot more to it, but you get the basic idea.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Elizabeth Mitchell from V and Lost

May 11th, 2010

Elizabeth Mitchell is one of those actresses that has a way of drawing you in. On Lost, Juliet became such a beloved character that I would venture to say was probably just as popular as the Oceanic 6. She now plays Erica Evans on V, where she doubles as an FBI Agent and a leader of the 5th Column (the resistance movement against the Vs). Whatever the role she takes on, Elizabeth Mitchell is just brilliant. I recently had the chance to speak with her and we talked about the upcoming Erica/Anna showdown, the similarities and differences between Erica and Juliet and her favorite moments from filming Lost. (We even chatted a little bit about our golden retrievers!) And while she could share next to nothing about the way Lost ends, we talked about her time there and if she was happy with the way her story ended.

What originally drew you to the role of Erica?
Well, it’s actually really interesting because since I was a little kid, I wanted to play kind of a sci-fi hero protagonist woman. And that really was it. That was the initial draw, and it was basically kind of a childhood wish fulfillment — that sort of thing. Because that’s what I watched, and that’s what I love. And then as I started getting into it and my character started getting more interesting, I was like “Cool, okay this is cool.” So that’s what initially drew me to it. Actually, honestly that was it. I thought it would be a really unique and interesting way to spend my time. And I thought it would be really fun. I had been doing such deep, dark stuff, I thought that taking a little kind of a popcorn movie would be great. Not of course realizing that once I joined it, she would become twisted and dark. (laughs) But you know, that’s just me, that’s what I tend to do.

Well, I like it!
Good, I’m glad. Thank you!

What do you think makes V different from Lost or any other shows you have been on?
Well Lost was really its own world, and so completely unique in the way they went about doing things. Because of Damon, I think, and his tricky little intricate mind. But I actually think that V for me is different because it’s an action-adventure sci-fi show. Whereas Lost was really — I guess you could call it sci-fi, but it was really just this unique hybrid of all kinds of wonderful things. But I just think V is kind of — or what I was hoping for at least — was kind of a shoot-em-up, sci-fi, us-against-them kind of thing and of course, it’s turned into all kinds of wonderful murky shades of gray which is even more interesting, really. Those were my kind of hopes. I kind of wanted to be Han Solo, you know, that kind of thing. So we have one of those now. I think I really do best as the kind of tortured critter who walks around trying to figure everything out. (laughs)

Erica is very suspicious of the Vs for good reason. Do you think the 5th Column is going to gain more followers as the show goes on?
I do think they will, and a lot of it has to do with faith. The whole show I think — it’s so funny, people went political with it, which I thought was great, because I love hearing what people think about things. But to me, it’s all about faith — blind faith for them. It’s about having faith in something. And really, the faith is here, but the Vs are bad. You know, there’s only been a few instances that she can actually pinpoint to say this is true. But her overall feeling is one of such tremendous evil coming her way that she’s taking it on faith that that’s what this is and she’s doing everything she can to stop it. So I believe more and more people will start to feel that way, and things will start to get scarier and scarier. And of course, we as the audience know that Anna is up to no good. But as far as the human race goes, she’s pretty good on paper, as they say. (laughs)

What don’t we know about the Vs that we might find out soon?
Well, I mean, the fact that Anna has all those teeth is pretty cool. I guess we’re going to find out a little bit about the baby which is super super cool. And I think that’s going to be really fun. That’s something I didn’t get to see that I just read about. So I’m very excited to see how the Val and Ryan thing goes.

Yeah, the baby with the tail.
Yeah! How cool is that?! I think we’re going to find out more about what their agenda is, and what their capabilities are. And a little bit more about what they possibility might need from us, and why can’t she just take it peacefully? Why do they have to take it with such force? Obviously, they want something from us that we’re not really willing to give up, or else they wouldn’t be so sneaky about it. I mean, I don’t think Anna’s being sneaky just to be sneaky, that’s just a waste of time. But you never know. (laughs)

And talk a little bit about Erica’s relationship with her son, Tyler. Is she ever going to talk some sense into him?
No I know! It’s really funny, because I was just reading one kind of little review which I don’t usually do because I feel like it can get in your head a little bit. But there’s a couple people that I read, and I’m like “Oh, okay,” because they usually have a pretty good understanding. And one of them was like, “And then he put on the jacket. And that’s getting old!” And I thought well, it is actually, if you think about it. So I don’t think it’s the jacket that keeps her from talking to him, I think it’s the fact that if he knew, and he’s such a kid, I don’t believe he would make good choices with his knowledge, if that makes any sense. I think that any more knowledge that he has, puts him in more danger. And she’s just, she’s completely lost. But I love their relationship. It’s such a teenager relationship. He’s just a long streak of misery. And she basically kind of puts up with it. She’s obviously not a good mother. I mean, anyone who comes home and downs three fingers of vodka is probably not a good mom. (laughs)

INTERVIEW: Laura Vandervoort (Lisa) from V

April 6th, 2010

One of my new favorite shows in the fall was V, based on a miniseries of the same name, that explores the possibility of new, perhaps more advanced life forms. Unlike it’s sci-fi counterpart on the same network (Flash Forward), V kept me continually interested week after week. At the end of the first four episode run, we learned that Anna (the leader of the Vs, played by Morena Baccarin) is Lisa’s mother. This was a rather shocking way to go into a long (far too long if you ask me) hiatus, but it kept me wanting more. Last week, V returned and I believe it was just as strong as when it started. The Vs are interesting creatures, and I’m still not sure if they qualify as good, evil, or somewhere in between. I recently had the chance to chat with Laura Vandervoort (Lisa) where she addressed this. We spoke about her character, playing different types of aliens, what makes V so unique and the possibility of her returning to another cult favorite, Smallville.

You played an alien on Smallville. But I want to know how is Lisa different from any other character you have played.
Well, yeah I guess, if people looked at it from the outside, they’d probably say “Okay, she plays aliens a lot.” (laughs) But, really Kara from Smallville and Lisa from V were completely opposite, despite the fact that they were both not human. Lisa herself, is at this point anyway, constantly walked all over, she doesn’t have an opinion, she just follows orders. You would think she was a bit of a weaker character as opposed to Kara, who was outspoken and a little obnoxious at times. Right now, she’s one of the weaker characters that I’ve played, just in terms of she’s allowing people to tell her what to do, but that changes very quickly.

And can you talk a little bit about Lisa’s relationship with her mom, Anna.
It’s not a very healthy one. But she’s a V, she doesn’t know any different. This is the mother she’s always known, this is the mother that they all know. They’re not coddled, they’re not held, it’s not a warm relationship. It’s almost like a business agreement, and she has to follow through with her destiny. She’s next in line for Queen V, and she can’t mess that up. There’s a lot of weight on her shoulders.

Absolutely. And since V’s are supposed to be devoid of any human emotion, is it challenging to play one?
It is in it’s own right. Sometimes I feel like I don’t want people to think that we’re just not doing anything when we’re acting because it is tough to not do anything if that makes any sense.

Oh yeah.
As actors, I think [we] want to go bigger with it. But the great thing about Vs is their subtlety, and everything they’re feeling is within their eyes. And they’re strong, so they’re to be feared. Especially with Lisa, she’s got a lot going on especially in the last couple of episodes that we’re shooting right now. She’s dealing with a lot, and there’s so many layers and things she needs to take into consideration and everytime she speaks, she’s kind of calculating the risks and the factors and who’s in the room. It’s crazy, she’s dealing with so much right now.

And how is Lisa’s relationship with Tyler going to develop? Are her feelings for him real?
The only way I can answer that is if the audience thinks her feelings are real, then that’s wonderful. Whether or not they actually are, maybe Lisa’s just really great at fooling the audience and Tyler, or maybe she really is feeling things. But you have to really watch the next couple of episodes to understand if Lisa’s just following orders, or if this is kind of her own choice.

ADVANCE REVIEW: V: "It's Only The Beginning"

November 23rd, 2009

V has only a few episodes under it’s belt so far this season, but I am really enjoying it. I have to admit that I am still way behind on Flash Forward, but V I have been keeping up with (not that it’s been terribly hard to do so). V centers around a group of “Visitors,” or aliens, who visit planet earth in huge ships, claiming that they come in peace and wish to share technology with people on earth. Anna (Morena Baccarin) is the V leader who is strikingly beautiful and calming in her own way. The Vs bring into questions issues of devotion, worship and whether they are just arriving or if they’ve been there all along.

The way ABC has chosen to break up the season is to air 4 episodes in a row, and not air a new one until 2010. I’m not sure how I feel about this, but I can say that the mid-season finale — if you can call it that — was very successful. The episode centers around the resistance movement (at this point it consists of Georgie played by David Richmond-Peck, Father Jack played by Joel Gretsch, Erica Evans, played by Elizabeth Mitchell, and a V himself Ryan Nichols, played by Morris Chestnut), and their plans to take down the Vs. Meanwhile, Erica’s son is getting much more involved with the Vs, and it becomes very clear that the Vs are using him for some ulterior motive. The Vs also give Chad Decker (Scott Wolf) an exclusive story about the healing centers (which Anna plugs on TV throughout the episode). The Vs claim their medical technology is incredibly advanced and far beyond anyone’s imagination.

But back to the resistance group, which I think is interesting and unique. Each person contributes something different. They make one small step towards progress at the end of the episode, but I don’t want to spoil anything. We also learn more about Anna’s relationship with the Vs, and about the 5th Column (the V resistance group).

This episode left me with a ton of questions, but I don’t feel like that is a bad thing. I think the season is moving at a pretty good pace, even though I want instant gratification. I want to know more about “getting connected,” which was brought up by a V in the last episode. I want to know more about the leader of the 5th column, and whether there are more traitors. I realize I just have to be patient to wait for the answers, but there is one thing that is for sure…V is keeping me very interested and very entertained. And at the same time, it is very grounded (for a show about aliens and all). The characters are well developed and well acted, and I only wish I knew more about some of Anna’s right hand men and women. I can’t wait to see how the season progresses, and I really look forward to when it pairs up with LOST in 2010.

Be sure to tune in tonight at 8 pm on ABC to see “It’s Only The Beginning.” I can’t wait to hear your thoughts as well!
