REVIEW: The Secret Circle “Family”

Family

It’s been a rough year for everyone in Chance Harbor, but in the season finale we finally get to see our favorites triumph over the evil John Blackwell. Oh, and Eben was there too. Vengeance!

“The One Ring” AKA the Crystal Skull
Anyone else get some creepy Gollum vibes off of the reactions to the crystal skull? (Clearly, Adam had some issues in that department but we’ll get to that later) Even though Cassie and Diana both learned at prom last week that their dear old dad is a crazy evil pervert, they decided to still meet up with him in the middle of nowhere to build their crystal skull. The group heads to a random deserted beach where the girls take turns tossing some rocks into the ocean then Cassie hops in to pull out the creepiest looking non-skull in the history of this show. Thankfully, it ends up shrinking down into an actual skull, so we don’t have to worry about Blackwell carrying around a squishy white magic blob as he chants evil spells in what I have always assumed is Latin. The entire sequence was hands-down the most ridiculous thing this show has ever produced.

REVIEW: The Secret Circle “Prom”

May 4th, 2012

prom-3

This week’s prom-themed episode of Secret Circle continued this show’s streak of improved episodes and amped up nicely for next week’s finale! No melodramatic relationship moments, just good ol’ zombie friends, evil fathers, and kidnap. Typical day in Chance Harbor!

REVIEW: The Secret Circle “Traitor”

April 27th, 2012

Traitor

Welcome to Grandma Jane’s wake. Cassie is upset, naturally. Complete strangers stare at her sympathetically in slowwww motionnnnn. Mostly, I’m just surprised there are so many other people in Chance Harbor. It’s been weeks since we’ve seen this many outsiders.

REVIEW: The Secret Circle “Crystal”

Crystals! Crystals! Crystals! This week the gang set out to steal the remaining crystals from the Elders. Someone died and another person found out her true identity. All in all it was a pretty successful week for The Secret Circle.

The Hunt for Crystals
Even though John Blackwell showed up alive in Chance Harbor just a few short weeks ago, the teenage members of the circle have decided to trust him blindly and set out on a mission to find the remaining hidden crystals. Have any of the members of this brain trust taken a second to think about their leader? The man is EVIL. He openly admits to having dark magic. Why do these kids just constantly do what he tells them to? You’d think the whole pretending to be dead, disappearing for 16 years, and then showing up and hiding his powers situation would make at least one of these kids step back and say, “Hey, maybe we shouldn’t listen to the man who was sort of responsible for the deaths of about half our parents”. At this point, Jake’s Grandpa is right; the circle is going to die and it’ll be because they trusted Blackwell.

REVIEW: The Secret Circle “Sacrifice”

March 30th, 2012

Sacrifice

The witch hunters are back…and this time they brought demons! Sound the alarm! Quick, head to the nearest abandoned house to meet up with your circle of witches and then rush to save your helpless father only to learn that he’s had magic to save himself all along! That John Blackwell is a tricky one.

Blackwell versus Witch-Hunters
Turns out Blackwell is just as corrupted as we all suspected. 16 years ago, Blackwell planned to summon demons and use their powers to defeat the witch-hunters. But now the tables have turned and the witch-hunters have their own turncoat witch to help them summon demons. Anyone else feel like the witch that’s secretly helping the witch-hunters is Ethan? We haven’t seen him in a while and we know he’s worked with the witch-hunters in the past to try to kill Blackwell.

REVIEW: The Secret Circle “Curse”

March 24th, 2012

The-Secret-Circle-Season-1-Episode-17-Cursed-John-Blackwell

This week’s Secret Circle taught the kids of Chance Harbor some important life lessons. Forget sex education, just have your shady maybe-evil father tell you that your first time sexual encounter with the guy you’re destined to be with has spawned a curse that will kill another member of your circle of witches. That ought to put a stop to future sexcipades. In other news, bitches witches be crazy.

The Secret Circle is back…and actually better than ever! Maybe absence actually does make the heart grow fonder or maybe I’m just finally getting on board with the story that the Secret Circle writers are trying to tell. Either way, episode 16 was great.

REVIEW: The Secret Circle “Return”

February 18th, 2012

Return

With the long-awaited return of John Blackwell, Secret Circle successfully builds on its momentum from last week! Every episode of this show contains about 50 minutes of boring, dialogue heavy scenes with 3-4 exciting, well-done scenes, and “Return” is no different.

Cassie’s Daddy Drama
John Blackwell is here! After months of build-up, Blackwell’s entrance was rather tame. The two shared a nice scene on the dock as Cassie finally let out all the resentment that’s been building since she discovered her father is alive. Additionally, the moment in the woods as Cassie asks him to help stop her from going through with the spell the evil witch hunter put her under.

REVIEW: The Secret Circle “Valentine”

February 10th, 2012

Valentine

After weeks of mostly disappointing Secret Circle episodes, it was great to sit down and watch the first truly good episode of the spring.

Secret Circle works best when it embraces it’s horror/thriller elements and tonight was a fine example of that! I fully admit to jumping out of my seat a few times when the ghosts were following Cassie throughout the episode.

The Medallion
I’ve spent a lot of time on these recaps talking about why the show isn’t working for me and what I’d like to see change; one of my biggest complaints is that the show needed to expand the world and introduce some outsiders and villains. Not only did we get villains this week, but we also got a (returning!) outsider, Isaac. Score!

REVIEW: The Secret Circle “Medallion”

February 3rd, 2012

ep1-13-15

Another week, another stiff and boring episode of Secret Circle. All of the pieces are there to create an fun show, but the magic still isn’t there (horrible pun intended). One day, I hope this show figures out that it needs to be a plot heavy show; sadly, today was not that day.
