As the summer comes to an end, I will be offering my thoughts on the new shows of the fall season. I can’t/wont spoil though! I am going to start with Cougartown.

Cougartown is a comedy that stars Courteney Cox (Jules) as a recently divorced 40 something, who is trying to stay afloat as a new single mother in a youth-obsessed world. Her ex-husband, ever the screw up, (played by Brian Van Holt) lives nearby, which proves difficult as she enters the dating market. Jules has two polar-opposite best friends: her assistant at work Laurie (played by the charming Busy Phillips) and her neighbor best friend Elle (played by tv veteran Christa Miller). Laurie tries to bring out Jules’ wild side, while Elle is just accepting of their inevitable aging (and wine and scrabble Friday nights).

I have to say, I was unsure of another typical, set in suburbia sitcom (the town is called Cougartown although it obviously holds a double entendre because Jules is a cougar), but I was pleasantly surprised. The writing was witty, clever and funny. I found myself laughing out loud on many occasions and at the end, I wanted to see more. Jules’ son Andy (Dan Byrd) is also is atypical of sitcoms. While he is embarrassed frequently by his dead beat dad and quirky mom, he also is accepting and comes across as a good kid trying to find his way in the world.

I highly recommend this show. It is a comeback, fantastic role for Courteney Cox. Bill Lawrence, of Scrubs fame, is the Executive Producer/Writer/Director. It is definitely a must-watch for the fall season. Cougartown premieres on Wednesday, September 23rd, 9:30 PM on ABC. Be sure to check it out!
